Anyone have any good suggestions for a Political Science Senior Thesis topic? I'm thinking of doing something that involves things like:
-Election cycles
-Voting behavior
-Why candidates win or lose (at Congressional or Presidential level)
-Factors at play in elections
-Alternatives to the Electoral College, or other electoral reforms

I'll be finishing this about a year from now, so something related to the 2018 midterms could be good as well.

I was going to do this for honors in Political Science. The only directions provided are: "The thesis must investigate a clear research question, whether empirical or normative.  It must rigorously examine data, texts, and/or other evidence to evaluate that question.  It must be or exceed 25 double-spaced pages in length, not including any bibliography or appendices.  The expectation is that the thesis will be of extraordinary quality, exceeding that of the typical research paper in an upper-division political science course." So yeah it seems pretty open.

Are you more inclined to a topic where you have to deal with practical statistics or one that is more theoretical in nature?

Probably more practical though overall light on the statistical side, like one idea that I'm interested in is recommending a replacement of the Electoral College more in line with democratic values. They also offer honors for those above a certain GPA threshold in upper level political science courses, so hopefully I can reach that instead (which would save me a lot of trouble).

Thank you very much Muon, Cathcon, and Antonio! The advice is much appreciated, and I'm sure it'll come in handy.

Is it alright to say you have a 3.5 GPA, if you have a 3.45 GPA?

I'm recovering from wisdom teeth/jaw surgery, but I'm almost out of pain meds so that's going to be annoying.

Seeing Al Franken in an hour for a book talk, anyone got a good question I should ask?

I got the chance to ask a question. Jake Tapper had just asked him about 2020, and he flat out said No, not going to do it, and I believed him. I panicked a bit since there were a lot of people, so I asked whether he would support a Medicare for All plan if a Democrat won in 2020. He responded positively about supporting a single payer solution.

Great choice for a question, and great answer from him. Congrats! Smiley

I had a pretty chill conversation with Randy Bryce (Iron Stache) and Jeff Weaver today. Nice people.

How'd that happen?

It was at a fundraiser/meet the candidate event for Bryce that I helped out on.

Were you on advance side or finance side?

I wasn't really working on his campaign or anything, but his event was at our building so I was just mainly helping to set up the room and sign in attendees.

Since 1993 I've appeared 31 times on an official ballot (including primaries and party offices). This morning I announce that I won't be on in 2018. I'm timing the announcement to occur before my big western road trip which starts on Friday. Petitions for 2018 start circulating just after Labor Day, everyone will know my plans well in advance.

Congrats on your long tenure, and thank you for your work on the AVR bill. It'll be interesting to see what a competitive race looks like in that district.

So...my cat passed away yesterday. If I'm not on this forum for the next several days, that's why.

It was International Cat Day too. F[in]k cancer.

Sorry about that. I've had a dog die recently, and while the pain doesn't go away, it does dull out over time.

It looks like I'll be hitting 10,000 posts in about a week or so, and to commemorate it I will officially be changing my avatar to DC. It's pretty much my home now.

I have completed my inner journey to becoming a full Washingtonian (which is a little confusing since I believe that's the demonym for WA and DC).

How do you like living in DC? I assume it's a very lively and beautiful place, but also incredibly expensive.

I personally really like it, though living here isn’t for everyone. There’s always something to do or somewhere to go, and you usually don’t need to have a car to get anywhere. Living near all the action is more expensive, but there are tons of options and some are manageable prices, especially with a roommate.
