LBJ gave Kennedy Texas in 1960.

Muskie gave Humphrey Maine in 1968.

Mondale kept Minnesota in Carter's column in 1980.

Gore gave Clinton Tennessee in 1992 and 1996.

Polling suggested Johnson actually hurt Kennedy in Texas, and that Shivers, Stevenson, or really anyone else would be better.

Yes, but I'm sure the Shivers/Connally wing of the TX Dems would have openly backed Nixon without Johnson on the ticket.
