Somewhat late, but Hidalgo recently became the third Mexican state to decriminalize abortion for the first 12 weeks of a woman's pregnancy. Honestly, despite how disappointing AMLO has been, MORENA has been moving quickly on trying to push for decriminalizing abortion, passing gay marriage, etc. at the state level. All of the MORENA state legislators in Hidalgo voted to decriminalize abortion as an example, while all of the PRI and PAN voted against the measure.

Also, would talking about 2022 election polls be fine here? Or should that go in another thread entirely?

Veracruz decriminalized abortion yesterday. It’s really picking up steam.

Seems to have passed overwhelmingly too unlike in Hidalgo. It'll be interesting to see if we continue to see a north/south divide in Mexico when it comes to abortion decriminalization.

I'm also very interested to see how the August 1st national referndum to put ex-presidents on trial does. I'm almost positive a majority vote for the referendum, but given the amount of voting stations available and needing a 40% turnout, things get tricky.

I thought this would have been mentioned, but seeing PAN and Spain's far-right and ultraconservative VOX meet together with the goal of "stopping the spread of communism" is just a perfect representation of how bad the political opposition to AMLO is. There is a legitimate case to be made against AMLO and MORENA, but the opposition insists on shooting itself in the foot. This comes after promises of PAN moderating and modernizing itself.

Mexican Supreme Court effectively forcing Coahuila to pass abortion decriminalization/legalization with this ruling. This could effectively make abortion legal nationwide in Mexico if this is applied to all states.

Another key ruling when it comes to abortion from Mexico's Supreme Court where the court rules it is unconstitutional for states to recognize human life begins at conception.

This is going to apply directly to Sinaloa's state constitution and will decriminalize abortion in the state, but this kind of ruling, like in Coahuila, can be used with other Mexican states as well.

Colima has become the 6th state in Mexico to decriminalize abortion. A recent Supreme Court ruling in Mexico makes abortion decriminalized nationwide, but this is making it official in the state. Interesting dichotomy to the U.S with Roe v. Wade potentially being overturned.

Violence against journalists is ramping up in Mexico in 2022. It's always been an issue, but Mexico is averaging around a journalist killing a week with 5 journalists killed in 2022 already. For comparison, in 2021 there were 9 journalists killed in Mexico.

The state of Guerrero becomes the 8th state to decriminalize abortion:

Interesting given Guerrero is one of the few states that still hasn't moved to officially pass gay marriage legalization despite the Supreme Court officially legalizing it nationwide.

AMLO still has a little less than 2 years left in his sexenio, but things are already moving fast for the 2024 presidential election. It's looking more and more likely that Sheinbaum will be MORENA's candidate and next President of Mexico, but curious who the opposition puts up with Ricardo Anaya or Lilly Tellez or someone entirely different. I really struggle to see the opposition make any serious inroads until after 2024, but I guess the margins in CDMX could be interesting after the surprising MORENA losses in the 2021 midterms.
