and it looks like Chafee will be vulnerable even if he does win his primary:

Chafee  47%
Brown   40%

Chafee          50%
Whitehouse  38%

If Laffey wins the primary, either Democrat would beat him easily:

Brown     54%
Laffey     30%

Whitehouse   55%
Laffey           30%

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/January%202006/Rhode%20Island%20Senate%20January.htm

The past Brown U. poll had Brown just 2% behind Chafee and this one has him only 7% behind Chafee. Brown is still not very well known, so he still has a lot of upside. Whitehouse is better known and does not look that promising in a race against Chafee.

An incumbent hovering around 50% is likely to pull through. I'm beginning to drift back towards my original view that Chafee isn't all that vulnerable.

He's vulnerable in the primary, at the very least.

He looks vulnerable to me, especially against Brown.

Not an easy thing to do, especially with Rasmussen's 500-600 sample sizes, especially considering that only 16% of Rhode Islanders are registered as Republican

I still don’t buy that Chafee will lose, though his fundraising remains pretty poor and that combined with the primary will potentially be a problem.
