I think ScotCon use AV among the whole membership

Hmmm... so AV is good for use by Conservatives, but not good for use by the wider community?

They're electing one individual not an entire parliament, so yes.

Counting going on in the Scottish Tory election; Ruth and Murdo not suprisingly neck and neck on first preferences.

Shame, I was intrigued as to what would happen if they went through with the split

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Davidson So this is the new Scottish Conservative leader.

Is Scotland the only place where Women are doing so well in terms of top level positions? This is the second female Scottish Conservative leader in a row, as well the Deputy First Minister is female.

The current UK Conservatives are very progressive. If I was in the UK I'd back them.

Slightly more seriously, yes the Tories do generally seem to have put their Section 28 past behind them.  But I don't see what's "progressive" about them on any other issues.

Leadership of a fairly isolated mid-minor party is not really a top level position. Tongue

You need to look no further than Canada to see how bad a Conservative government can be.

Sure, compared to our far-right reactionaries who call themselves 'Conservatives', Cameron is pretty moderate.

I would suggest that this particular chain of discussion ought to be continued elsewhere, if it is to be continued at all.

Sure.

This needs to be improved by the insertion of "and now I flip-flop on them all because" before "David Cameron". Grin (No idea if the statement is still technically true then. Doesn't matter.)

That would make Lamont a pretty clear favourite on paper. Also quite a turn-around; I think Unite backed Gray in 2008.

By UK Conservative Party and Coalition Government, I mean David Cameron. Perhaps it's a Canadian thing to refer to the PM as such.

Cameron is Pro Gay
Harper would ban gayness if he could

Cameron has stated that he intends to be "Progressive"
Harper would rather lose his balls then ever, ever, say "Progressive" (unless he was using it as an insult)

Harper's not privatising everything in sight, so doesn't need to balance it with moderate social policies - even then, beyond legislating for gay marriage (something that the devolved parliaments were planning to do anyway - forcing the goverment to either allow it now, or be left in the situation where gay rights in Britain would be disunified) his policies are as you'd expect for a Tory government.

That makes Lamont a very clear favourite on paper, though an upset win for Macintosh would still be possible if he can win the members vote heavily (maybe his lead with councillors shows some potential for that kind of thing). The Deputy election looks fun; Sarwar's impressive councillor and CLP hauls looks good for a strong showing with the membership, but Davidson has all but one of the affiliates that matter. I think Harris and MacDonald can probably be ruled out in their respective races.

What's the deal with Sarwar? Quite hoped Davidson would be deputy.

What does Lamont represent? Seems the unions were heavily behind her, so I'd normally assume she's further left than McIntosh, but then the elected Labour also split towards her favour, which usually means they're right-wing/establishment.
