Great to hear. Great that a candidate that would have made this a lean R/tossup race is forgoing it for a longshot at the presidential nomination. Great to hear.

Not shocking lol

If Beto actually ran against Cornyn he would be the incumbent not Cornyn.

Wut? How would he be the incumbent?

Cornyn is really unknown to the state, like, really unknown. Its similar to Nelson, where Beto actually has more name rec in the state than the sitting senator.

Name recognition from his race against Cruz, and Cornyn isn’t really as well-known as you’d expect.

But this also means Cornyn not overwhelmingly disliked, while an R is next to his name. Lean/tilt R, if Beto ran (obviously off the table now).

Cruz wasnt either, and Beto still ran well against him. This is an extremely good poll for the Senate so early if Beto were actually running for the senate instead of a longshot at the presidential nomination.

Candidates for President can pull a Rubio, I'd imagine if Beto flames out he'll do that.

I wish it were that simple, but the filing deadline for TX is December of this year.

The IA Caucuses are in February of 2020.
Unless he pulls an Ojeda, he cant pull a Rubio.

Beto is a human being with agency not a chess piece. Losing another statewide elections in successive cycles will kill his career faster than an unsuccessful bid for President. He is doing what he needs to do to maintain his own political viability.

Running for president and then dropping out will just kill his career faster. Almost no one has gone from failed presidential candidate to then win a major office.
