Massive HP and sniveling lackey of the Slavocracy, although his successor managed to exceed him in awfulness.

Near unanimously agreed by scholars to be one of the worst Presidents of all time, and rightly so.

Useless. Not as awful as everyone else says, but you can't deny that he was pro-slavery, and that alone makes him an HP.

He was too troubled to be president. He was a rich kid who married a woman who wasn't right in the head to begin with, he later become a drunk that quit and started back a ton of times. He did see his son killed in front of him, which was horrible. That just ruined his term there before he even started, he fell off the wagon, and him and his wife had some epic arguments in the White House that got quite violent.

As a leader he was a pushover and a people pleaser. Neither one makes an effective president. He should have just manned up and stuck to one side of the plate.

He is the 19th century of John Edwards in that way, with not as stong of a wife.

Like James Buchanan, one of the worst presidents this country ever had, although it is worth mentioning that for both men their paramount objective was to maintain the Union at all costs (which is why they were elected into office in the first place) -even if it meant appeasing the South on the issue of slavery, despite the fact that both men personally and morally opposed the institution.

That they ultimately failed to prevent the Civil War (which in retrospect was likely inevitable) is the primary reason why they are consigned to the ash-heap of history.
