What they are really concerned about is not his birth certificate, but rather the color of his skin. They believe that makes him unfit for the office of the presidency.

It's no surprise small-minded people are racists.

It makes sense though.

It's the last white-majority state on the Mexican border.

White people are flipping out, faced with more and more indigenous people returning to areas they had once inhabited. The displacement of White Americans by Mexicans is seriously poetic justice of the type that whites have always fought against. Even something so minor as Mexicans moving into the neighborhood is viewed as a great threat by the white people living atop Indigenous and Mexican graves.

Yeah, Arpaio's delusional and all, but the birther stuff just isn't the same without that crazy Moldavian dentist in the picture.

Arizona was essentially uninhabited until the late 19th century and still didn't have any significant population until after WWII.

You don't need to agree with jacob (certainly not word-for-word), but you do need to understand what he's talking about to politically understand Arizona.

Arizona is one of the most politically reactionary states there is, sometimes rivaling  South Carolina in its right-wing extremism.

Yeah, there are plenty of Arizonans who are good sensible people, but the cranks have control of their government.

But the Mexicans were never particularly indigenous-friendly either.  Hell, when they owned Arizona, they ran the same kind of brutal campaign to subjugate the Apache as the US would run after they took the territory.
