How did Mondale receive more votes from Republicans? He received 7% and Obama received 6% in 2012.

Less partisan era. Reagan got way more Democrats though than Romney or McCain got.

Obama probably received more registered Republicans than Mondale received. Though with self identifying Republicans, the previous answer about partisanship pretty much explains that one.

Probably thanks to people who still thought of themselves as “Republicans” and thought Reagan was an aberration, but later realized that Reagan had transformed the party and stopped thinking of themselves as “Republicans”.
