Meaning there are no official nominees and all candidates are listed without party affiliation. Kind of like Mayoral elections in Chicago, I believe.

Still an oxymoron.
Why would candidates be listed without party affiliation in a US Senate race? Louisiana, California, and Georgia (only for special elections) have nonpartisan primaries with affiliation on listed on the ballot.

Because Mississippi law doesn't allow affiliation listing for Special Elections.

Who do y'all think would get appointed to Cochran's seat if he resigns?

Maybe one of the row officers - perhaps Stacy Pickering (Auditor).

I'm in the dark. Do we know what these elusive health problems are specifically?

Sounds like the onset of dementia. Evidently, he's been existing in sort of a daze for the last few months - making the wrong votes, uttering non-sequiturs during debate, etc.

Example of the bolded part?

McDaniel will announce against Wicker tomorrow night.

Given that the CL is a historically bad publication and the lack of discipline or cohesion among McDaniel staff/surrogates, the Wednesday announcement could just as likely be about running for Lt Gov in 2019.

Also, why would McDaniel prefer to challenge Wicker instead of wait for the special?

Because the Cochran is resigning rumors may not have any truth to them.

I'm rooting for McDaniel. It can only end well. If he wins, according to this site (https://www.realchrismcdaniel.com), he'll be a check on DJT's administration in the way Flake has been. If he loses, another Deep South Dem seat.

Since when has Senator Flake been a check on Trump?

Remember that Evangelicals have 1984'd themselves and no longer think adultery is bad.

This.

Likely R based on state history until we get a sense of who the democrats are actually running here. I'll provide a more complex analysis once we know if it's Hood, Presley, or someone else entirely.

And if they do, what's the best strategy for victory?

Remember, if Dems win this race along with the still-too-close-to-call contests in Arizona and Florida, the Senate will be composed exactly as it was before: 51 GOP and 49 Dem.

I hope Espy can find a way to win, this and Florida flipping would result in the GOP having no net gain in the Senate.
