Does anyone think NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg will run for President in 08?  Also I heard he will run as an Independent if he runs.  Is that true?Huh?  .Thanks..

Definitely not. It's too late for a serious independent to enter the race unless it's because of primary fallout. He might be able to enter late if an arch-conservative wins the GOP nomination.

If the candidates are a clear liberal vs. a clear conservative, I can see him running as an independent.  Otherwise, no.

Running as an independent, Bloomberg would not have to worry about raising money and would be able enter at any time he wants (before the time available to get on the ballot in the 50 states) because he can buy himself name recognition and a campaign within about 6-8 weeks with his $15 billion net worth.

What?  How is it too late for a serious independent to enter the race?  Sure, the primaries are coming up in 10 months, but an independent doesn't have to go through the primaries.  The general election is still more than 19 months away.  The deadlines for getting on the ballots are well over a year away.  It's too late for a serious independent to get in?  How early would have been early enough?

This is only true if you can't drop $1,000,000,000 on the race.

It is not too late. Perhaps as Giuliani fades in the GOP race, the current NY mayor, who owes Giuliani for his own victory, will consider jumping in. I'd absolutely consider voting for Bloomberg.

Money don't do all that much in the general... ask Tom Golisano.

If you want to buy an election, you'll have to buy the primary.

The WaPo is now reporting that, despite Bloomberg's public statements that he's not interested in running for president, he has privately told people close to him that he's open to it:

I doubt he would. He really has no incentive to do so, considering that he is not under the delusion that he could actually win. Especially if Giuliani were to be the GOP nominee.
