I think it has more to do with how left-wing she is rather than her sexuality. Obama looks like a moderate compared to her.

That is, of course, because Obama is a moderate.

In all honesty, though, Baldwin has a tough time here, not despite but perhaps because of the fact that Thompson is like seventy years old and utterly bland.
