He and the LDP are pretty much as Establishment as one can get. Nationalism is the political establishment in Japan, as opposed to the West where it is seen as populist. One of his and the LDPs great attributes is that they are seen as a steady Hand, whereas the few Instances of Opposition Rule are held in memory as Chaotic. The closest one could perhaps get to "populism" in the LDP is Shigeru Ishiba or historically Toshiki Kaifu et. al. (and Tanaka?).
