Title: Endorse your primary candidates here!
Post by: Joe Republic on October 26, 2009, 11:20:35 PM
This is the official thread in which you can endorse fellow forum members and help support their quest to win their party's presidential nomination.

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, please see this thread (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=104046.0).  Particularly this post (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=104046.msg2204494#msg2204494).

A quick recap of what you do:

  • You have been given 5 endorsement points.  These are yours to give to as many candidates from either party as you like.  The profiles of all candidates are detailed below.
    `
  • Simply post here the name(s) of the candidate(s) you wish to endorse, and how many points you are giving them.  It doesn't matter if you give their username or their candidate's name.
`
  • This thread will stay open throughout the primary campaign, which means that you do not have to pledge support straight away.
`
  • Do not pledge more or less than 5 points.  If this happens, your endorsement will not be counted until it has been corrected.
`
  • If you change your mind after endorsing your candidates and wish to endorse somebody else, feel free to say so.  However, you'll need to make a new post and not edit your previous one, otherwise it likely won't be noticed.
`
  • Do not post your endorsements in the other (main) thread.  This wouldn't mean that you are disqualified or anything; you simply need to post your endorsements here instead.
`
  • As a precaution against 'illegal activities', endorsements will only be accepted from forum members with at least 50 posts to their name.  Furthermore, I'll be conducting IP checks on any accounts that I feel to be suspicious.
`

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here and I'll try and answer as quickly as possible.

---------

Notice to all candidates

If there is a mistake in your profile below, or if you want to make any changes, please notify me ASAP and I'll fix it.

Also, you too have 5 endorsement points to use as well, and I'd advise you to use them even if it's only on your own campaign.

Finch openly talks of these matters and equates the Anti-Christ with (variously) Wall Street, Mine Owners, People from California, People from New York, Mexicans, Capitalism, the Media, Homosexuals, Canadians, Hippies, Republicans and former State Delegate (and Finch's next door neighbour) Tom Thomas.

Xander Xiao, recently elected to his third term, is the Senior Senator from California. Prior to his election, he served five terms in the House of Representatives. In Congress, he has no major legislatve accomplishments to point to, but he has accumulated a solidly liberal voting record and has had his name attached to most major legislation.

Pamela Pickering, former representative of Colorado's 2nd congressional district (the only Republican to do so in modern times) and current 7-year governor of Colorado, has certainly made a name for herself in her 13 years of public service. She grew up in the Bronx (and has a strong Bronx accent), and attended CU, after which she settled in Boulder, CO. While in congress she advocated for smart multilateral foreign policy and balanced budgets. Her fiercest rhetoric came when she was opposing violations of privacy or civil rights. As Governor she pushed for smart deregulation of the private sector and advocated for limited smart regulation, cleaned up any and all corruption, and achieved a budget surplus in her 5th and 6th years as Governor.  Most recently she has successfully made significant cuts to the state business tax, which caused a slight economic boom in the state. She is often very frank and energetic, but this has a certain appeal to many disillusioned voters.

Wyatt Williams, former Congressman of the New Hampshire 2nd Congressional District and current Junior Senator has begun his push for the Republican Nomination. During his tenure as a Representative and Senator, Williams has acquired the ire of conservatives with his maverick stances compared to the national GOP. Being pro-choice, supportive of civil unions and also for stem cell research, Williams only link to the majority Conservative Republicans are his center right economic policies. Senator Williams hopes to use his run to return the GOP to "the peaceful standards and moderate policies of Rockefeller Republicanism" and to bring about one thing, "Change".

You can make your endorsement at any point in the primary campaign, but the Iowa caucus will be in three days.

I noticed that too, and I was about to ask if either of you had deleted your posts.  Luckily I'd already recorded both of them in my spreadsheet.

For the record, Quincy gave five points to Timothy Taylor (Purple State), and you gave five points to your campaign.

Question:
Let's say, we were getting to the last primaries. What would happen if you had 4 campaign points left, then someone who had previously endorsed you with 5 points changed their endorsement and only gave you 1? Even if you had a lead, would you be eliminated? Or what?

Basically, if you finish a stage and after new endorsement activity has been taken into account you have 0 credits, you're out; no matter how many delegates you have.  I know it's implausible, but then that scenario happening in this game is pretty unlikely.  :)

Hudson and Xiao wins Iowa Caucus

It was an exciting night in Iowa as the count down to this year’s Presidential election began.

In the Republican Primary the popular female Governor of Arkansas, Helen Hudson, won a comfortable victory taking 25 % of the vote. Governor Hudson has long been considered one of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination, and she has now made history by being the first woman to win the Iowa caucus. Will she also make history by being the first woman elected to the White House?

Even though her win puts Hudson in a comfortable lead, she still has a long way to go if she wants to be Commander in Chief. Her most dangerous opponent seems to be the handsome and charming moderate Clay Cooper of North Carolina, who came in second to her in Iowa, claiming 17 % of Iowans’ vote.

Next up is the fairly liberal state of New Hampshire where a Moderate like Cooper will be favoured to beat the Conservative Hudson, and shortly thereafter Cooper’s neighbours in South Carolina will cast their votes.

On the Democratic side California Senator and master campaigner Xander Xiao, succeeded in taking home the Iowa caucus, winning 18 delegates. Xiao’s fellow colleague in the Senate Timothy Taylor, and former Tennessee Governor Quentin Quinn, who won 14 and 13 delegates respectively, was however not far behind.

The question now is weather Xiao’s charm and excellent campaign strategies will help him keep his advantage over the other candidates, and prove that America is indeed ready for a President who’s name they have no idea how to pronounce, or if he will eventually be brought down by one of his many fellow Democrats in the race.

Joe, I'm not trying to tell you have to play your game, but I think it might be a good idea to give bonus to candidates who placed in the top four in a primary. For example:

Let take the Iowa Results:

Hudson came in first so she would get a 100% bonus toward NH
Cooper can in second so he would get a 75% bonus toward NH
Vasquez came in third so he would get a 50% bonus toward NH
Spencer came in fourth so he would get a 25% bonus toward NH

Expensive victories in New Hampshire might cost winners’ nominations.

Helen Hudson and Xander Xiao have done it again. They have booth successfully won the second primaries of this year’s Presidential election and thereby conquered a number of new delegates for their cause.

It was however expensive victories for booth candidates.

Hudson, although being the winner of Iowa, was never expected to be very competive in New Hampshire due to her social conservatism. The Arkansas Governor however seemed determined to change that, and spent a huge amount of her campaign funds on advertising and campaigning in the state to turn the tide. Yet she only narrowly managed to beat home state candidate Wyatt Williams.

On the Democratic side Senator Xander Xiao decided to go all in as well, and use his huge campaign funds to rid himself of all competition in New Hampshire.

This sort of campaigning nevertheless seems to worry quite a big number of people. This paper spoke to the life-long libertarian and New Hampshire native, Bastian Bullworth, who’s been considered one of the country’s leading economic experts for years. About Xiao’s and Hudson’s spending Bullworth said; “It’s one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen in a long time. Both of them are spending like fifteen-year-olds in a candy store.” He continues to tell us that he thinks this might be a problem for the country if either candidate is elected President. “I’m afraid that if these two cannot handle their own campaign economy responsibly, there’s no way we can trust them to be responsible with the Government’s money when in office. I would say that either of these candidates would turn out to be big spenders.”

The question is though if either candidate will ever manage to get nominated if they keep handling their budgets like this. Both Hudson and Xiao wasted more than twice as much in New Hampshire as they gained in campaign contributions, an economic equation that will have them broke before being able to secure enough delegates to become their party’s nominee.

As our eyes turns towards Nevada, Hudson seems to have learned her lesson, as it was recently reported that she will have a very minor campaign in the state that is believed to easily be carried by its own Governor, Eric Emerson. Xander Xiao on the other hand still doesn’t seem to be slowing down money throwing.

Statement from the Office of Helen Hudson

Our campaign strongly disagrees with the disturbing statements made by Swedish Cheese towards our campaign. Of course our campaign is going to spend more many than other campaigns. We have more points to spend. Governor Helen Hudson went into the New Hampshire primary with 39 credits, and came out of it with 33. We do not see how that is reckless spending. We increased our delegate lead and increased momentum. Other candidates have lost just as much, and they didn't even win delegates. If anything, our campaign has spent our money wisely. It is silly to say Governor Hudson won't be able to control the government's money. The only reason Governor Hudson is spending so much now is because many people have confidence in her and support her for the Presidency.
And also, the lesson we learned is that citizens of New Hampshire and Iowa support Hudson. We are not focusing on Nevada because we feel like there are other states we need to be focusing on now. There are also 2 other candidates who has their main focus on the Nevada primary. It would be foolish to go all out on it, when we know our chances aren't great to begin with.

The South Carolina primary is beginning imminently, therefore no more endorsements will be included for that particular contest.

Those who haven't yet issued endorsement points may still do so; these will go towards the next stages after South Carolina.

Since Lopez has dropped out of the race, can I transfer my two endorsement points that I gave her?

If so, I'd like to transfer them to Al's crazy "fight-the-anti-christ" character.

Lopez endorsed Taylor, thus giving him all remaining credits she had.  However, since 2 of them were from you, they can be transferred from Taylor to Finch after the current stage.

A suggestion: To involve those whoa aren't the nominees, perhaps there could be some third party candidates (weak, the goal would be to get a certain % of the popular vote) and/or allow former candidates to campaign for others in the general election.

For this particular primary and general campaign, there's only going to be two parties because I want to keep things as simple as possible.  But in the next game or two, I'll try and introduce a third party to spice things up.

Former candidates will be able to campaign for the eventual nominees in this general campaign, or at least provide some kind of beneficial effect, but I still need to work out the dynamics first.

It would be rather interesting if in the next game, points could be allocated to any primary at any time.

I think he means like Giuliani campaigning in Florida and ignoring the earlier races... as the game stands, there'd be nothing to gain by doing that.

Do the Four Corners border (i.e. do I get the neighboring state bonus for Utah?) and are you doing the Maine/Massachusetts border you did in Risk?

Yes to the first, and no to the second, and thank you for reminding me to clarify that.  :)

NiK is going to get ridiculous regional bonuses.
HappyWarrior's bonuses will be even more ridiculous.

It's true that they will have an advantage, though I don't think it'll be "ridiculous".  What's more, other candidates have different kinds of advantages, which potentially spill over to the general election campaign as well.

Copying this here:

I've discovered that Hamilton used dummy accounts he had created (namely 'Swing Voter' and 'johnnyboy') to boost his own endorsement point totals.  Therefore, I'm ejecting Rick Romano from the race, and canceling the endorsements issued by his three accounts.  The delegates Romano had accumulated will be considered "unpledged" for the rest of the game.

Since 'johnnyboy' also issued one endorsement point each to Hudson, Jessop, Pickering and Emerson (who himself later endorsed Jessop), I'll be reducing your credit balances accordingly, which will take effect after this stage is complete.  You know who to thank for this.

I give all my remaining credits to Pamela Pickering (transfer of credits from Hudson). She is the only candidate who has the ability to win this nomination against Helen Hudson. I encourage all other candidates, who have waged hard campaigns to drop out and unit around this conservative.

It is time to look at fact that if you do not stand besides her, Helen Hudson will win the nomination.

Jesus, you're dense.  You endorsed yourself with your own account (along with Swing Voter and johnnyboy), and then spent those credits on your campaign.  You had a remaining balance of 3 credits or so, which evaporated when I canceled the endorsements issued by your sock puppets.  Ergo, you don't have anything left.

Anyway, I think I'm quite within my power as the creator of this game to ignore any further attempts by you to fuck things up.

I'm changing my endorsement tokens from 5 to Vepres to 5 to Finch.

Sorry Hudson, but you've already one the race. No use giving you credits to win states you already will win

Sorry, I forgot to mention earlier that now that Hudson has clinched the nomination, her endorsements points are now 'locked' in.  This is simply to stop an exodus of endorsements to the Democratic race, which would then affect the general campaign (negatively for Hudson in this case).

Hudson may still receive endorsements, just to clarify, but she cannot have any transferred away from her.

Can mine still switch since Williams was still in the race when I endorsed Finch?

I have my endorsement points lodged with Finch presently. Will the 'locked in' element of endorsements re-open come the General Campaign, or should I be transferring my points to Hudson before the end of the Democrat Primary season to prevent them being tied up during the General?

No.  Hudson had already clinched the nomination, so it didn't matter if Williams was still in the race.

Hudson's points are locked in to avoid her losing any of them, but she can still receive them either from the Democratic side or from posters who haven't issued endorsements yet.  So my advice would be to switch your points from Finch to Hudson now (i.e. before the Democratic race wraps up), assuming that's what you want to do.

The details will be explained at the start of the general campaign, but essentially, there will be a sign-up thread for prospective running mates (which can include the former presidential candidates), and then the nominees will announce their selections shortly before the convention phase.

Cheers for the advice. Can I please transfer my points from Finch to Hudson now (sorry Al). I realise it will be too late for the Pennsylvania Primary, but I assume you'll switch them as a first priority even if Xiao wraps up the Primary at that point?

Actually I'm afraid I can't allow that, for the same reasons I couldn't do it for A-Bob either.

-----

All endorsements are now locked, period.  No switching of endorsements will be recognized, and no new endorsements will be accepted either.

Al (Finch) has a remaining balance of 120 credits, and he'll have until the Democratic convention to decide whether to endorse Xiao, Hudson, or neither of them.  After the convention, if he hasn't endorsed, his credits will be canceled.
