Title: A National Tragedy (2011 Terrorist Attack Changes History)

This topic will simulate the consequences of a 2011 bombing of the Capitol Building on the night of the 2011 State of the Union address.  President Obama, along with Vice President Biden and much of the Presidential Line of Succession were killed in the bombing.  The topic will cover the new President's Presidency as well, and will hopefully go on for a long time.

Background:  President Barack H. Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States in 2008.  He was inaugurated in 2009, and promised big changes. 

On January 26, 2011, Barack Obama's second State of the Union address was scheduled to be held.  After his first two years as President, Unemployment rested at 9.1 percent.  A Healthcare bill with a restricted public option was passed with bipartisan approval.  A second stimulus package was passed.  Overall, Barack Obama's approval rating had improved to 59%.


I know I'm new here, but I've been reading these topics for a while and I thought I'd give it a try.  I like to think I know a great deal about politics, so I'll give it a go.

Background of Perpetrator:

Afshar Akbari was born in Tehran, Iran in 1980.  In 1982, his father moved his wife and son to Detroit, Michigan.  Akbari received American citizenship in 1984, and graduated high school with honors in 1998.  

He was a supporter of the Clinton government, and entered the United States military in 1998.  He served one term of duty, and was honorably discharged in 2002.  However, he was disgusted by the prejudice against Arab Americans after 9/11.  Even as a member of the armed forces he faced discrimination.

He was repeatedly turned down for entrance into Secret Service training, and he suspected it was due to his faith.  He eventually was accepted into the Capitol Police in 2005.  However, the discrimination he continued to face gradually caused some radical positions.  In 2007, he began speaking to a Muslim preacher with connections to Al Qaeda in Somalia.  

Over the next two years, they began planning the most damaging terrorist attack in the history of the United States.  By 2010, all that was left was to produce a bomb.  By November of 2010, the explosive was ready for use.  

Yes, it's partially taken from Nadal Malik Hassan.  It's a pretty outrageous situation, but this is semi-possible, so I thought I'd do this.

As I said restricted...And by that I mean very restricted.  And by bipartisan I mean about 5 Republican votes. 

Anyways, it doesn't really matter.  I was just trying to relay a message.

As I said restricted...And by that I mean very restricted.  And by bipartisan I mean about 5 Republican votes. 

Anyways, it doesn't really matter.  I was just trying to relay a message.

5 Republican votes is not bipartisan. Something genuinely bipartisan has at least 1/3 of the members of each party supporting it (at least in my opinion). 5 Republican votes is essentially a Democratic bill. Anyway, other than that, good timeline. Keep up the good work.

7:30 A.M.  President Barack Obama arrives in the Oval Office for his daily morning briefings.
11:41 A.M.  Akbari makes his way to the basement of the Capitol building.  He manages to avoid bomb-sniffing dogs.
5:00 P.M.  Dignitaries begin arriving at the U.S. Capitol Building.
6:50 P.M.  Vice President Biden arrives at the Capitol Building.
7:34 P.M.  Chief Justice John Roberts arrives at the Capitol Building.
7:35 P.M.  President Obama's motorcade leaves the White House.
7:49 P.M.  President Obama arrives at the Capitol Building, along with his family.
7:51 P.M.  Akbari enters the Assembly Room, still carrying the duffel bag which is timed to explode at 8:10 P.M.
8:00 P.M.  The President enters the room.
8:05 P.M.  The President begins his speech.
8:09 P.M.  The silence is the room is broken by gunshots which ring out, Akbari fires at the President, who is immediately shielded by Secret Service agents.  Akbari is shot.
8:10 P.M.  With the chaos of the room, no one has left.  The bomb goes off, collapsing the roof of the central chamber.

Television feed immediately cuts after shots are fired at the President.  It is reported seconds later that an explosion had occurred at the Capitol.  It is not yet known whether President Obama was shot.

8:12 P.M.  The United States is in a state of shock.  The world has not reacted.  Millions of people saw the disaster live on television or online.  The video tapes are repeatedly reviewed.

8:12 P.M.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is in South Africa, receives word of the attack.  She immediately departs her hotel for the airport.

8:18 P.M.  Emergency Vehicles arrive at the Capitol Building in masses.

8:19 P.M.  Internet use throughout the United States and the world has soared.  Twitter and Google have crashed, and the speed of the World Wide Web has crept to a near-halt.

8:21 P.M.  It is confirmed by CNN newscasters that President Obama was shot, although his condition is not known.  The President was shot 9 seconds before the explosion.

8:22 P.M.  Secretary of State Clinton boards a plane bound back to the United States.  She releases a brief statement at the airport, condemning the reports and noting that her husband was among those in attendance.  She is obviously shaken.

8:24 P.M.  The United States military lands helicopters around the Capitol Building and the White House.  Washington D.C. is under military control.

8:29 P.M.  A federal judge rules that the "Designated Survivor" is constitutionally the Acting President of the United States until survivors can be sorted out.

8:30 P.M.  Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius is declared Acting President, and immediately grounds all commercial aircraft in the United States.  She raises DHS alert level to red, and the DEFCON level is raised to 3.

8:34 P.M.  The bodies of President Obama and Vice President Biden are pulled from the ruins of the Capitol building.  President Obama was killed by a bulletshot to his neck; Vice President Biden was killed by falling debris. 

8:36 P.M.  Acting President Sebelius is informed of the deaths of President Obama and Vice President Biden.  She immediately notifies Secretary of State Clinton, who notes a squadron of fighter jets surrounding her plane. 

8:38 P.M.  Acting President Sebelius releases a live statement on national television. 


My fellow Americans,

Today, as you know, a terrible tragedy occurred in this nation.  I am speaking to you as your Acting President.  As your Acting President, I have terrible news.  Today, we lost two men who defined an era; our President, Barack Obama; and our Vice President, Joseph Biden.  I saw these men as friends and collegues.  Barack Obama and Joseph Biden changed America, they saved America.  We will remember them forever as men who defied the status quo and did all they could to help the American people.  As long as this nation lives, so shall they.

Today, we face turmoil.  Our nation is facing a threat larger than any other in its history.  We have been struck in a terrible way.  I tell you now, we will find those responsible.  We will find them, and we will destroy them.  These people will not receive pity from the United States of America. 

However; tonight, I ask all Americans to feel not hate, but to grieve for our fallen leaders.  Only the Lord knows how many lives were lost in this senseless attack.  I ask that you keep their souls in your hearts and prayers.  This is an hour that tests our strength, that troubles our minds, and that hurts our souls.  With the help of each other and the lord, we will persevere. 

The world will once again know the strength of the American people.  We will come from this tragedy a stronger and greater people, and a stronger and greater nation.  We relentlessly do.  The spirit of America is undying, and the world will know that once more.

For now, I ask that the prayers of all Americans and all citizens of the world go out to all those affected by this disaster.  May God bless America, President Obama, Vice President Biden, and all those souls who lost their lives tonight.

8:45 P.M.  Secret Service confirms that fatalities number in the 100s, and the full death toll with not be known for days.

9:56 P.M.  The Capitol Police confirm that one of their officers was the perpetrator.  They do not reveal him as a Muslim.

10:45 P.M.  Al Qaeda in Yemen releases a statement on Al Jazeera, claiming responsibility for the attack.

10:48 P.M.  An explosion occurs at the United States Embassy in Yemen.

11:01 P.M.  An explosion occurs at the United States Embassy in Tel Aviv.

11:05 P.M.  News Agencies begin reporting the explosions at the Embassies.

11:07 P.M.  All United States Embassies begin evacuations.  Bridges and Tunnels in New York City close. 

11:21 P.M.  Osama bin Laden releases a statement claiming he personally planned each attack, and there were more to follow.

11:25 P.M.  Riots are reported in Los Angeles.

11:49 P.M.  An explosion occurs outside the Sydney Opera House.

January 27, 2011

12:01 A.M.  The island of Manhattan is under military control.

12:11 A.M.  A moving truck full of explosives detonates on the Golden Gate Bridge.  The bridge remains standing, but it suffers extensive damage.

12:15 A.M.  For the first time in 150 years, the Acting President of the United States has declared martial law.

12:34 A.M.  Martial Law is declared in the United Kingdom.

1:08 A.M.  Martial Law is declared in France.

3:15 A.M.  Osama bin Laden releases another statement, hailing the attacks as a strike on the Western World, and remarking that the United States will never be dominant again.

3:56 A.M.  Former President Bill Clinton is pulled from the ruins of the Capitol Building with only minor injuries. 

4:25 A.M.  Secretary of State Clinton speaks with her husband.

4:56 A.M.  Acting President Sebelius once again addresses the nation, giving a reassuring speech but offering no answers.  She reveals Michelle Obama and her children are safe.

7:10 A.M.  President Clinton makes a public statement, declaring martial law void.  She also institutes a national week of mourning for those who lost their lives.  The cities of Washington D.C., New York City, San Fransisco, Los Angeles, and Miami remain under military control.

9:21 A.M.  Western news sources report that only a quarter of the people in the Capitol have been accounted for.

9:50 A.M.  The military releases control of all areas of Washington D.C. with the exception of the Capitol Building.  The White House is handed back to Secret Service control.

10:12 A.M.  New York City and Miami are released from military control.  All unaffected areas of San Fransisco are released from control.

10:30 A.M.  Riots are reported in various U.S. cities.  Among them are Boise, Idaho; Jacksonville, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Boston, Massachusetts; Dallas, Texas; and San Diego, California.  The National Guard is deployed to all these cities.

11:00 A.M.  President Clinton visits the ruins of the Capitol building, giving a rousing speech to the crowd that has formed outside.

12:00 P.M.  President Clinton arrives at the White House, where she is greeted by Michelle Obama and her children. 

1:00 P.M.  The bodies of President Obama and Vice President Biden arrive at the White House.  Jill Biden arrives in the same motorcade; Beau Biden arrives shortly after, as do the rest of the Biden children.

2:00 P.M.  The bodies of President Obama and Vice President Biden leave the White House for Bethesda Naval Hospital.

4:00 P.M.  President Clinton holds a press conference at the White House.

5:00 P.M.  CNN newscasters report that most of those missing in the Capitol have been accounted for, and a preliminary death toll would be released shortly.

Yeah, I thought about that a few minutes after posting...I'll revise it.

The entire roof of the chamber collapsed.  The Supreme Court survived because they were sitting in an area without falling debris.  It came down to feet as to who died and who didn't.

It's incredibly unlikely for a plot like this to occur.  I simply chose Iran.  The terrorist was only a plot piece.

7:15 P.M.  It is reported that Senator Byrd was being treated at Walter Reed Medical Center with critical injuries.  The exact injuries are not known.

8:10 P.M.  It is reported that Senator Byrd suffered severe dehydration as well as several broken bones.  A moment of silence is adhered to by all news networks to honor President Obama, Vice President Biden, and all the Senators and Representatives that lost their lives.

8:45 P.M.  It is reported that Senator Byrd's injuries are extensive but not life threatening. 

10:00 P.M.  Most riots have subsided.

11:31 P.M.  A damaged section of the Golden Gate Bridge collapses.

12:14 A.M.  A plot to bomb the hotel then-Secretary of State Clinton was staying in on the night of the terrorist plot is revealed.

February 2, 2011 - The State Funerals of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden are held at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  They are then laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.  Representatives from every nation in the world attend the funerals.  President Obama's eulogy is given by President Hillary Rodham Clinton; Vice President Biden's is given by his son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden.

February 5, 2011 - Predator airstrikes in Pakistan have increased.  The Pakistani government is outraged, but President Clinton insists that the airstrikes will continue whether or not the Pakistani government cooperates.

February 6, 2011 - President Clinton says in a press conference that her replacements for the deceased members of the Obama Administration will be announced shortly.  She says she will do all she can to assure that President Obama's initiatives are passed and put into law.

May 15, 2011 - It is revealed by the Indian Intelligence Agency that Pakistan has begun a secret buildup of nuclear weapons and materials.  Both President Clinton and Prime Minister Singh call for sanctions on Pakistan.  Meanwhile, 21 predator airstrikes have occurred in May.
 
May 22, 2011 - Secretary of Defense Robert Gates states on Meet the Press that since the 1/27 attacks there has been a flurry of new, credible information on the location of Osama bin-Laden.

May 28, 2011 - President Clinton departs on a seven day visit to China.

June 1, 2011 - Sarah Palin announces her candidacy for President on Meet the Press.

June 8, 2011 - An American Predator Drone is shot down by Pakistani Anti-Air Missiles.  Pakistan claims no wrong doing, seeing the Drone as an aggressor.  President Clinton criticizes the move and increases the troop build up around the Pakistan border.  Pakistani relations develop into a key issue in the GOP race.

June 14, 2011 - President Clinton travels to San Fransisco to cut the ribbon in the reopening ceremony of the Golden Gate Bridge.

June 19, 2011 - President Clinton addresses a joint session of Congress, the first session since the attacks.  It takes place at the University of Virginia, as repairs at the Capitol are not complete.

June 26, 2011 - President Clinton travels to South Africa in the beginning of a two week long tour of the continent.

July 2, 2011 - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India is cut down by an assassin's bullet in New Dehli.  A Pakistani national, Muhammad Tarkhan, is arrested for the assassination.  Under torture, he admits to the crime and claims he is an Inter-Services Intelligence agent (Intelligence Agency of Pakistan).

July 2, 2011 - President Zardari of Pakistan rejects these claims.  While giving him condolences to the Indian people, he rejects Tarkhan's claim, and raises the thought that Indian authorities coerced him to say he was a Pakistani agent.

July 2, 2011 - President Clinton returns to the United States.  She says that a full investigation is necessary and the United States government will take in all information before making an official statement.

July 2, 2011 - New Prime Minister P. Chidambaram says that it is irrefutable that the government of Pakistan was behind the attack.  He calls for action against Pakistan.

July 3, 2011 - Two U.S. Marines are killed by Pakistani fire after their squad accidentally crossed the border.  President Zardari apologized personally to their families, but at the same time insisted that the United States halt their approach toward Pakistan.

July 3, 2011 - President Clinton says in  press conference that relations with Pakistan have soured in recent weeks.  She says that while it is an unfortunate path to take, she will not rule out an invasion.

July 4, 2011 - CNN reports that Ayman al-Zawahiri, Al-Qaeda second in command, was killed in a CIA Predator Airstrike in the early morning hours of July 4, 2011.  President Clinton refuses to comment.

July 5, 2011 - The Central Intelligence Agency confirms that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in the village of Thall, Pakistan.  Along with him, 8 others were killed, among them his son.  President Clinton holds a press conference in which she pushes for further allowance of US Airstrikes in Pakistan.  President Zardari of Pakistan is glad to see al-Zawahiri dead, but condemns the airstrike itself.

July 8. 2011 - Osama bin Laden releases a video condemning the airstrikes as an Invasion, while also giving his condolences to his fallen comrade.  This is the first tape without any notable freezing or skipping.  He mentions current events and there is no evidence it is faked.  Secretary of Defense Robert Gates remarks "Well, this shows he's alive.  We need to get him.  As General McCrystal said, this war won't be won unless he's out of the picture."

July 16, 2011 - The third GOP debate is held.  All 9 candidates attend.  The main topic is the New War on Terror, with Pawlenty coming off strongly.  Sarah Palin blasts the policies of former President Obama, and Mitt Romney cites the disrespectfulness of her tone.  Rick Santorum doesn't speak much, but when he does he pushes good issues.  Overall, the winner of the debate is seen as either Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty. 

July 22, 2011 - President Clinton visits Mexico, discussing the War on Drugs.

August 6, 2011 - The fourth GOP debate is held.  It is attended by all 9 candidates.  The main issue is the New War on Terror.  It inevitably develops into a feud over U.S.-Pakistan relations.  Thune comes off as a strong candidate for national defense, as does Pawlenty.  Paul continues to be a great debater, while Santorum and Cantor seem to sink into the background.  Overall, the winner is seen as Thune.

August 14, 2011 - An explosion in the New York Subway System kills twenty seven.  Mayor Bloomberg and President Clinton pledge a full investigation and vow to find the ringleader of the attack, revealed to be Osama bin Laden.

August 17, 2011 - CNN reports that an airstrike in Pakistan was reported to have been targeting bin Laden.  This claim is later denied by the CIA, who say no such airstrike occurred.

August 21, 2011 - Former Senator Rick Santorum announces he is suspending his campaign indefinitely.  He endorses Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich of Georgia, saying he is ready to become President.

August 29, 2011 - President Clinton meets new Indian Prime Minister Chidambaram in Washington.

Just because the people approve of what she's doing doesn't mean they wouldn't vote for someone else.

The Tea Party movements are still full force, it's just that most economic talks have stalled after the attacks.  The main issue now is the War in Afghanistan and Pakistan relations.

September 4, 2011 - The fifth GOP debate is held.  All 8 candidates attend.  There is no main subject.  Overall, Ron Paul pushes economic policies, being regarded as good ideas.  Mike Huckabee pushes traditional conservative and Christian values, while Mitt Romney pushes economic experience, while Newt Gingrich shows strength in the area of National Security.  Thune argues with Palin over her perceived lack of National Security credentials.  Eric Cantor continues to sink further into the background.  The winner of the debate is seen as Ron Paul, but most polls show Huckabee had the best performance.  Gingrich also is regarded as a winner.

September 11, 2011 - President Clinton attends the opening of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.  Also in attendance are Former Presidents George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and former Acting President Sebelius.  

September 11, 2011 - Osama bin Laden releases a new video tape, reviewing the past ten years.  He says that Al-Qaeda is not on the run, that the US and Pakistan know where he is, and says he is not frightened.  

September 18, 2011 - A suicide bomber kills 42 and injures 201 in Times Square.  Osama bin Laden releases an audio tape later that day, claiming responsibility for the attack.

September 18, 2011 - President Clinton makes a statement at New York City Hall, saying Osama bin Laden will be brought to justice.  However, concerns are being risen over the administration's ability to stop terrorist attacks.

September 22, 2011 - The sixth GOP debate is held.  The topic of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda dominates the debate.  All of the candidates but Ron Paul say they would support an Invasion of Pakistan if they would not cooperate in The New War on Terror.  Gingrich and Thune criticizes Clinton's handling of National Security.  Sarah Palin does not give any real solutions.  Cantor once again slips out of the spotlight.  The winner is seen as Gingrich, with Thune also coming off strongly.

October 3, 2011 - House Minority Whip Eric Cantor announces the end of his campaign for President.  He endorses Senator John Thune, saying he has all the qualities of a great president.

October 11, 2011 - While they are leaving the Parliament Building for a break, members of the Indian Parliament are fired upon by five gunmen armed with AK-47s.  12 Parliament members are killed and 23 are injured, along with 7 bystanders killed and 11 injured.  The gunmen are killed.

October 12, 2011 - Prime Minister Chidambaram says that Pakistan based terror cells were behind the attack, and mobilizes 500,000 troops to the Kashmir border.  He says that if Pakistan will not do their job and defeat terrorists, India will.  President Clinton says she supports his decision.

October 12, 2011 - President Zardari says that Pakistan is doing all they can to defeat terrorists, and demands that the United States and India back down.  Meanwhile, his approval ratings have plummeted, and there are calls for his impeachment.  Former President Pervez Musharraf's approval ratings have skyrocketed, and there are calls for his resumption of the Presidency.

October 17, 2011 - President Asif Ali Zardari is shot in Karachi.  His injuries are not serious, but a senior aide is killed.  The gunman is revealed to be a supporter of Musharraf. 

October 24, 2011 - President Zardari is once again the subject of an assassination attempt.  He is fired upon in Islamabad.  This gunman is also revealed to be a supporter of Musharraf.

October 25, 2011 - The seventh GOP debate is held.  The main topic is the standoff between Pakistan, India and the United States.  Gingrich once again shows himself a superior candidate for foreign relations.  Thune and Pawlenty also show strength.  Ron Paul says the United States should remain neutral, an unpopular view.  Overall, the winner is seen as one of Thune, Pawlenty, or Gingrich.

October 28, 2011 - President Zardari survives yet another attack.  This one, similar to the attack his wife (Benazir Bhutto) was killed in, killed 41 people.  He is critically injured by a gunshot to the shoulder and a deep shrapnel cut in his neck. 

October 31, 2011 - A car bomb explosion outside the hospital President Zardari is being treated in collapses one quarter of the hospital, killing 127.  President Zardari is not injured.  Protests have broken out in recent days, calling for President Zardari to stand down as President and for Musharraf to resume the Presidency.  The former President calls for an end to the attempts on Zardari's life, but also says that if the people chose him as President, he would accept.

November 4, 2011 - The eighth GOP debate is held.  The main topic is once again Pakistan.  Each candidate with the exception of Ron Paul said they would support a coup d'etat in Pakistan.  Each candidate besides Paul also said they would support India in a war with Pakistan. 

November 6, 2011 - Prime Minister Gillani of Pakistan travels to Tehran and meets with President Ahmadinejad.  The Iranian President says that he looks forward to improved relations between the two countries.  Later that day, Iran pulls out of it's embassy in New Delhi.

November 11, 2011 - The Prime Minister of India announces an increases mobilization of troops to the Kashmir region.

November 24, 2011 - President Zardari of Pakistan is released from the hospital.  He vows to regain the trust of the people.  He also announces a massive troop mobilization to the Kashmir region.  UN Peacekeepers are dispatched to the region.

November 27, 2011 - E-Mails are leaked online seeming to connect Pakistan to the Iranian Nuclear Program.  They also show that Iran is in fact developing nuclear weapons.  Both Pakistan and Iran deny the authenticity of the E-Mails, and the United Nations express doubts.  President Clinton says if the authenticity is confirmed, there will be consequences.  The Prime Ministers of India and Israel echo her tone.  The government of the United Kingdom does not have such a harsh tone, but agrees.

November 30, 2011 - The ninth GOP debate is held.  Once again, the debate rotates around Pakistan and Iran for it's entirety.  The winner is seen as either Gingrich, Pawlenty or Romney.  However, the only loser is Paul, who once again is against action against Pakistan.

December 16, 2011 - A mass of protesters storm the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the Presidential Palace of Pakistan.  They are forced back and do not reach the building.

December 24, 2011 - In a US supported coup d'etat, Pervez Musharraf retakes power as President.  His troops storm the capitol, arresting President Zardari.  He vows to be more forceful with the United States and India, saying he will not cower from a fight.

February 6, 2011 - President Clinton holds her State of the Union address at the University of Virginia.  She outlines a troop surge in Afghanistan, introduces sweeping education reforms, and introduces a new bill that she and her economic advisors project will lower the employment rate substantially.  Similar to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration.  She proposes a plan that projects to stabilize unemployment at 7 percent.  She also proposes further expansions to Health Care reform.  While some of the policies introduced are controversial to some, most agree with the plans and her approval ratings increase further.

It is kind of like Huckabee and Thompson in the 2008 south carolina primary. If Thompson had not been there, then Huckabee probably would have beaten McCain in South Carolina.

If Thune had not been in the race, then Romney would have likely won a lot more of these contests than he actually did.

It's a good thing too.

Clinton would have still succeeded the Presidency. In the digital and information age, Clinton is capable of managing from afar or appointing someone on the field to manage.

My point still stands, Clinton was defacto designated survivor even with a random person staying home and watching it on TV. It would be unconstitutional to swear in Sebilus when Clinton is clearly alive.

April 15, 2011 - 500 Indian troops "accidentally" cross the border into disputed Kashmir.  They are fired upon by nearly 5000 Pakistani troops, who kill 210 of the Indians.  India prepares for War, and President Musharraf expresses his apologies.  The Pakistani Commanders are diciplined, but India is still preparing for an Invasion.  While the US attempts to remain neutral, Iran says they will step in for Pakistan, and Israel counters that Israel would get involved as well.  Most Americans support an Alliance with India and Israel against Iran and Pakistan.  Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon is dispatched to Islamabad in attempt to diffuse the crisis.

April 27, 2011 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is shot at while leaving his hotel in Islamabad for the airport.  While his motorcade is driving to the airport, a suicide bomber explodes a car nearby; the force of the explosion overturns Ki-moon's vehicle.  As Ki-moon crawls out of the car, he is shielded by civilians, who carry him inside a restaurant.  The Pakistani military quickly clears the area, and Ki-moon suffers two broken bones along with minor cuts and bruises.  However, 51 civilians are killed, 12 UN employees are killed, 4 members of the Pakistani Army are killed, and 11 Islamabad Police Officers are killed.  The attack effectively reverses the small amount of progress made during the Secretary-General's time in Pakistan.

What is the actual delegate count at the moment?  Is there much talk of a brokered convention?  If a brokered convention was a live possibility, then I don't think Huckabee would withdraw from the race and offer an endorsement.  At most, he'd suspend his campaign and stay neutral, keeping his delegates as bargaining chips at the convention.

I was already posting the delegate count when I saw this.  A brokered convention is likely.  THe thing is, I didn't plan for that to happen; I'm going to make an edit to what Huckabee said.

It's going to be hard for them not to have a brokered convention.  There are 123 superdelegates who could go either way.  Stay tuned.

August 3, 2012 - President Clinton makes an appearance in front of a joint session of Congress, speaking about the new proposed Public Works Department.  She refuted claims it would hurt any industry.  She said the plan would actually assist the private sector.  She said that the agency would give contracts to small, private companies.  Those companies would be responsible for hiring workers to do the jobs.  The plan consisted of 216 billion dollars in funding.  After the session, the public opinion of the plan is overwhelmingly positive.

August 9, 2012 - Senator Thune says he would support the creation of the Public Works Department, but says that restrictions must be given so that only companies that hire American workers are allowed to participate.

August 19, 2012 - India announces that Pakistani scientists had assisted Iran in it's nuclear weapons programs.  The United Nations immediately imposes sanctions on Pakistan. 

August 23, 2012 - Senator John Thune says he would support an Indian/Israeli war against Pakistan and Iran.  He criticizes President Clinton for not being tough enough on Pakistan.  The GOP runs an ad where President Clinton contradicts her positions on Iran and Pakistan on multiple occasions.

September 20, 2012 - The first debate between Senator John Thune and President Hillary Rodham Clinton is held.  The debate is focused on foreign policy and national security.  Senator Thune continues to criticize President Clinton for allowing three terrorist attacks to take place in the last year.  President Clinton attempts to use the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri to her advantage, but with little success.  Thune also criticizes her handling of the Pakistan situation, saying she backed down to Musharraf.  Clinton comes off as inept in the field of national security overall.

August 23, 2012 - Senator John Thune says he would support an Indian/Israeli war against Pakistan and Iran. 

Hmmmm.....I can imagine such a scenario occurring where American politicians were saying that the US should defend India and Israel if they're attacked first, and that we need to put a lot of pressure on Iran and Pakistan, but I think most of the emphasis would be on trying to defuse the situation, so as not to lead to a nuclear war.  Even if the US was really really ticked at Pakistan, they're not going to be eager to get involved in a nuclear war.  The way you worded it, it sounds like Thune is eager for war.

October 3, 2012 - The Vice Presidential Debate is held.  It is divided into 9 equal segments.  It inevitably becomes focused around Florida politics, with each candidate pushing what they did for their home state.  Nelson pushes the idea that Presidents' Obama and Clinton initiatives succeeded in stopping a global recession and put Americans back to work (unemployment is resting at 7.3 percent).  Bush shows strength in foreign policy and national security; he cites polls that say that President Clinton is losing the election to Thune.  He says that the people no longer trust President Clinton, who once had overwhelming support.  Senator Nelson handles this critique better than Clinton, saying changes have been made in the Administration and saying that he is confident any new terrorist plots will be foiled.

October 8, 2012 - The second Presidential debate is held.  The debate is focused on the economy.  President Clinton attempts to sell the Public Works Administration.  She says that neutral parties have suggested it would lower unemployment to 5.5 percent.  Senator Thune has no major complaints about the bill; he says it is one thing he and Clinton agree on.  Clinton pushes the success of her policies in lowering unemployment and stabilizing inflation at 3 percent.  She says that her new initiatives are expected to level inflation out at 0 percent, a claim Thune refutes.  Overall, Clinton is seen as strong in economic policy, and is regarded the winner of the debate.

October 14, 2012 - The third Presidential debate is held.  It is a townhall style debate.  Notable discussions include Pakistan, education, and welfare reform.  While Thune once again comes across as strong in foreign affairs, Clinton's education initiatives are extremely popular.  Meanwhile, Thune says that welfare and social security reforms must be made.  He says that people must no longer be allowed to cheat the system; that if people do not want to work they should not get government support.  President Clinton says she supports reform as well, but she seems to be refuting her earlier positions.  Overall, there is no clear cut winner.

Thune:  33%

October 25, 2012 - The President and First Vice President of Afghanistan are both killed after their helicopter crashes.  President Hamid Karzai is killed along with First Vice President Mohammed Fahim by Taliban insurgents after their helicopter is hit by a total of seven rockets.  It crashes into a mountain outside the city of Ghazni.  The helicopter is not recovered until seven hours later, and all of the 16 occupants died upon collision.  New President Karim Khalili calls for the complete eradication of the Taliban.  President Clinton announces a plan to send another 10000 troops to Afghanistan.

I wouldn't say eager.  He's prepared for it.  This situation is far worse than the 2001 standoff.  The fact is that the majority of people support it, and he's running an election.

Obviously both the US and UN are trying to diffuse the crisis, but at the same time, if Thune's elected and the war actually starts, Israel and India would have Thune's support.

Anyways, November's coming up soon...Any predictions?  Comments?

November 1, 2012 - Initial tallies show that a bill creating a Public Works Administration will pass the House handily.  Voting is scheduled for November 20 in the House, and December 1 in the Senate.

November 5, 2012 - The election is tomorrow, and the polling is closer than ever.  Senator Thune is behind President Clinton by a mere 0.8 of a percent, well within the 4 percent margin of error.

Does the media hide the reasons for Muslim terrorism because they are afraid of appearing anti-Semitic?  We spend billions of dollars attacking Muslims, primarily for oil, yet we never address the real issue for Muslim terrorism which is the Palestine conflict.  We can honestly save civilian and military lives, and billions of dollars by creating a govt for the Palestinian people, yet wealthy lobbyists continue to hide the real reason for terrorism. 

The American people continue to wonder the reasons for terrorism, but the media barely mentions the Palestine issue in the War on Terror.  We are fed to believe that we must spend more money on war to attack the enemy, but they are not the enemy.  We cannot eradicate the entire Muslim race because their extremism is created over time, and not prevented by fear of US military.  The real enemy is the failure of a Palestine govt.

November 8, 2012 - International reaction to the impending election of Senator Thune is mixed.  Thune is a relative unknown outside of the United States.  Oppositely, President Clinton is one of the most recognizable and popular figures in the world.  

November 18, 2012 - Senator John R. Thune is declared the winner of the 2012 Presidential Election.  The Ohio Supreme Court rules that Thune won the election in Ohio by 142 votes.  President Clinton calls for a further recount.  Senator Thune says the matter is resolved, but does not accept victory just yet.

November 20, 2012 - The House of Representatives passes a bill creating a new Independent Government Agency, the Public Works Administration.  The vote tally is 272 for, 163 against.

November 20, 2012 - Both President Clinton and Senator Thune praise the passing of the bill in the House.

November 28, 2012 - The United States Supreme Court rules that Senator John R. Thune is the constitutional President-Elect of the United States.  President Clinton says she will not fight their decision, and congratulates President-Elect Thune.

November 30, 2012 - President Hillary Rodham Clinton concedes the election to President-Elect Thune.  In her remarks, she summarizes her rise to the Presidency.  She says that she has done all she can to carry on the legacy of Barack Obama, and she is confident he would be satisfied with her.

December 1, 2012 - The world is shocked by the abrupt end to Hillary Clinton's term as President.  In the end, she will have served just under a year as President.  During that year, she went from the most popular President of all time at the beginning to the woman who gave the White House away in a few short months. 

December 11, 2012 - The electoral college votes to elect Senator John R. Thune and John E. "Jeb" Bush to the offices of President and Vice President, respectively.  They will be inaugurated on January 20, 2013.

December 18, 2012 - 1 World Trade Center, built to replace the destroyed World Trade Center towers, tops off at 1776 feet tall, now the tallest building in the United States.

December 31, 2012 - Over 40,000,000 people are in the New York City Metropolitan Area.  It is New Years Eve, and the most popular celebration in the world is about to begin.  As clock wound down, 10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1...HA---

A flash of light had filled the sky of New York City.  People had no time to react.  Just three miles away, a nuclear explosion had occurred.  After a few seconds, there were no screams.  Just eerie, unsettling silence filled the night in New York City.  January 1, 2013.

January 1, 2013

12:00 A.M. -  No one outside of the vicinity of New York knows exactly why the live feed playing on every news station cut at 12.  In New York, the silence was gone.  It was filled with screams and car alarms.  Manhattan was utter chaos.  No one was quite sure exactly what had happened, but as they looked toward the East River and saw the faint outline of a mushroom cloud, they knew.  For the first time in possibly a century, the only lights in the New York Sky were stars and the Moon.

12:05 A.M. - After a call comes in from Newark, New Jersey about the explosion and cloud, CNN begins reporting that a massive explosion had occurred in New York City.  Meanwhile, helicopters were being dispatched by other news agencies to find out exactly what had occurred.

12:15 A.M. - An NBC reporter in a helicopter reports that a mushroom cloud has formed over New York City.  He says the lights are all out in the city, and as far as areas of Long Island and Connecticut have no power.  He says a major explosion has occurred somewhere along the East River.  The images from the chopper are shown live.

12:20 A.M. - The United States Military orders all civilian and media aircraft to leave the New York City area.  They refuse to comment on the situation, saying President Clinton would make a statement shortly.

12:23 A.M. - A scientist in Brooklyn phones in reporting he has detected high levels of radiation in the area.  Speculation soon arises over whether this was a nuclear explosion.

12:30 A.M. - President Clinton releases a statement live on all major news networks.  She says an explosion of catastrophic proportions occurred in the New York City Metropolitan Area approximately 30 minutes ago.  She declares a Federal Emergency for that area, as well as New York State as a whole.  Governor Cuomo cannot be reached for comment.

12:38 A.M. - The island of Manhattan has been sealed off.  Evacuations are taking place across the Henry Hudson Bridge on the norther tip of the island.  All other bridges are presumed to be sealed, although their conditions are not even known at this time.

12:51 A.M. - Scientists on CNN say this fits all the characteristics of a nuclear explosion. 

12:58 A.M. - The City of New York is declared a disaster area.  President Clinton still refuses to comment as to whether the explosion was nuclear in nature, or whether it was accidental or purposeful.

1:21 A.M. - CNN reports that President-Elect Thune and Vice President-Elect Bush were attending a celebration on the Upper West Side at the time of the explosion.  These are not confirmed reports.

1:29 A.M. - President Clinton releases a statement saying that the military has confirmed the explosion was nuclear in nature, but declines to say whether it was an attack.

1:34 A.M. - The first post-explosion call from Manhattan is taken by CNN.  The caller describes being in Times Square at the time of the explosion, and saying that she could not see what happened after the initial, blinding flash.  She says that she is trapped in a subway station with ten other individuals, and there are no noises outside.

1:34 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. - The media continues to follow the explosion, but little new information is given.  The military has the area locked down, and there is no confirmation of whether it was an attack.

7:14 A.M. - A video tape from Osama bin-Laden is released on Al Jazeera.  In it, bin-Laden takes credit for the attack.  He says that it was not difficult to infiltrate a Pakistani missile base and take what was needed.  He doesn't say how al-Qaeda got the supplies into the United States, but says it was easier than he predicted.  He states the United States brought the attack on themselves.  By siding with "the Jews and Hindus", Pakistan had focused less on protecting their weapons and more on protecting their interests.

7:46 A.M. - Explosions are reported in Pakistan.

8:14 A.M. - Troop movements are reported in eastern Afghanistan.

8:25 A.M. - Explosions are reported in Iran.

8:30 A.M. - Troop movements are detected in Kashmir.

8:44 A.M. - President Clinton releases a statement on national television, calling for a Declaration of War against Pakistan. 

8:49 A.M. - India declares war on Pakistan.  Pakistan follows suit less than twenty minutes later, as does Iran.

9:31 A.M. - Israel declares war on Iran.  Both Pakistan and Iran return the Declarations.

10:24 A.M. - Iran and Pakistan declare war on the United States.

11:42 A.M. - Explosions are reported in Islamabad.

12:59 P.M. - Massive explosions are reported in Tehran.

1:34 P.M. - Suicide attacks in Israel have surged.

1:48 P.M. - India threatens nuclear force against Pakistan if they do not surrender.  Soon, Iran and Pakistan reciprocate.

2:10 P.M. - There is still barely any information out of New York City, however photos taken from across the East River reveal a city covered with smog and buildings covered with soot.

3:30 P.M. - FEMA releases a brief statement about the condition of Manhattan.  They say that most buildings are intact, but many have suffered extensive damage.  They say that at least three quarters of Manhattan was in some way effected by the attack.  They also state that the Chrysler Building has completely collapsed, and the Empire State Building is currently leaning at a very severe angle.  They suggests it will collapse soon unless moves are made to save it.  However, at the same time the officials doubts there is anyone left inside.  They estimates that over 95% of all glass panes in the city were broken, and regretfully say that anyone in major skyscrapers most likely flew out the windows after the explosion.

4:13 P.M. - A joint session of Congress overwhelmingly approves a Declaration of War against Pakistan.  Shortly after, U.S. troops are moving into the country.

6:56 P.M. - It is reported that US bombers have destroyed almost every known location where Pakistan held nuclear weapons

7:21 P.M. - It is confirmed President-Elect Thune and Vice President-Elect Bush were at a private party in the Upper East Side at the time of the explosion.  Their conditions are unknown.

9:12 P.M. - Iran threatens to use nuclear force against Israel if they do not abandon their attacks.

9:30 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. - Extensive bombings throughout Pakistan by the US and India take place.  Meanwhile, Israel continues bombing runs over Iran.

9:17 A.M. - Iran threatens to use nuclear force if Israel does not end their bombings.  Israel responds by intensifying their strikes.

12:05 P.M. - It is confirmed that the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the party that President-Elect Thune and Vice President-Elect Bush was located, collapsed during the explosion.

3:12 P.M. - President Musharraf of Pakistan says that Pakistan still has some hidden nuclear silos, and they will use their weapons on India and the United States if they do not stop their invasions.  Indian troops are facing heavy resistance, US troops are facing barely any.

5:00 P.M. - After the explosion, power went out as far away as part of Virginia, Ohio, New Hampshire and Quebec.  Power is now largely restored in these regions.

8:12 P.M. - The severely damaged Manhattan Bridge collapses into the East River.

10:45 P.M. - Iranian bombings are reported in Tel Aviv.

11:21 P.M. - Reports say that Manhattan's residents have mostly evacuated, and those remaining on the island likely require assistance.  FEMA announces that search and rescue, as well as recovery missions will begin at 7:00 A.M. the next day.

7:00 A.M. - Search and rescue missions begin on Manhattan Island.  They begin in Harlem, gradually working their way south. 

8:12 A.M. - FEMA says that their initial calculations place the loss of life at more than 250,000.  They estimate the actual numbers may be in the millions. 

9:42 A.M. - A Chinese satelitte image reveals why helicopters are not allowed to get a good view of Manhattan; the streets are littered with bodies and rubble from collapsed buildings.  One Times Square, the building the New Years Ball drops from, collapsed into Times Square.  The United Nations Building has collapsed. 

11:43 A.M. -Indian planes begin intense bombing on Islamabad.  Reports say President Musharraf has been moved to a secure location.  Pakistan's military is largely disorganized, most planes pass through without issue.  The scenario is completely different in India, where most Pakistani planes have been shot down while they passed into India.

12:45 P.M. - United States agents begin searching the rubble of the Waldorf-Astoria for President-Elect Thune and Vice President-Elect Bush.  The interior of the building is burning from a gas leak that ignited.

1:56 P.M. - The fires at the Waldorf-Astoria are subdued enough for recovery groups to begin searching for survivors.

2:31 P.M. - Iran reiterates it's stance to use nuclear force against Israel if they continue.  Reports that the Ayatollah was killed when his palace was bombed go unconfirmed.

3:50 P.M. - Unconfirmed reports say US troops are moving into Iran from Iraq and the Persian Gulf.

12:00 A.M. to 8:28 A.M. - Fighting continues in Pakistan and Iran.

8:29 A.M. - While rescuers are searching the ruined main ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, they find over 1200 bodies.  Over the night, 29 survivors were found, 11 of whom died of their injuries soon after being rescued.  Both the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect are not found.  The searches continue.

12:04 P.M. - FEMA releases an adjusted death toll, estimating anywhere from seven hundred thousand to two and a half million people died.  The reason for this change is a realization of the damage in mid Manhattan, specifically Times Square.

2:12 P.M. - Iranian Officials say that nuclear ICBMs will be fired in 12 hours at Israel unless they abandon their attack.

4:48 P.M. - Pakistan launches a counter assault against India, forcing their way into India. 

5:32 P.M. - President Clinton says the United States will terminate it's invasion if Pakistan allows airstrikes and troop attacks to continue against terrorist groups in the mountains and surrenders all nuclear materials.  President Musharraf quickly rejects these terms.

7:15 P.M. - Iran stands by their statement that missiles will be fired at Israel at 12:00 A.M. if they do not stop their bombings.  United States troops have already pulled out of Iran, but remain close by.

9:12 P.M. - Vice President-Elect John Ellis "Jeb" Bush is found dead in the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.  His body is badly mangled, and was one of the initial ones found.  He was identified by various items on his person.  President-Elect Thune is still unaccounted for.

11:48 P.M. - President Ahmadinejad states that nuclear ICBMs will be fired at Israel in 12 minutes unless they immediately declare the end to their bombings.  Israel responds by almost completely destroying Tehran less than three minutes later in a group of massive bombings.

11:56 P.M. - Iranian officials prepare an unspecified number of missiles for launch.

1).  US troops have mostly pulled out.  There are still about 1000 left, some training Iraqi troops and others operating Predator bases. 

2).  I haven't gotten to Syria yet.  I will soon.  They are still under Iran's influence.  Iraq is trying to stay neutral, but with limited success.

12:05 A.M. - Israeli radars detect 12 unidentified objects traveling over Iran near the Iraqi border.  They are moving at speeds of more than 8,000 miles per hour, more than 30 miles in the air.  Thirty seconds later they are confirmed as missiles, and they will strike Israel in less than 10 minutes.  Missile Defense Systems have been online in Israel over the last three days, and United States naval vessels in the Persian Gulf and Mediterrian Sea are also equipped to bring down ICBMs.  The Prime Minister is quickly evacuated from Jerusalem.  The US Navy will attempt to bring down the missiles, as will Israel, but with such a short amount of time the chances of success are slim.  

12:07 A.M. - United States Naval Vessels attempt to shoot down the ICBMs.  The vessels are:  USS Decatur, USS Lake Erie, USS Port Royal, USS John S. McCain, the USS Cole, and USS Fitzgerald.

January 7, 2013 - Senator John R. Thune is found dead in the ruins of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.  A crisis soon arises as to who will become President.  The Congress announces that the House will vote for the new President on January 9, and the Senate will vote for the new Vice President on January 12.  The vote is open; anyone could in theory be elected.

January 8, 2013 - Indian troops are still fighting their way towards Islamabad.  United States troops have captured several cities on the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf.  President Clinton has asked Israeli officials to back off their attacks on Iran, saying that the people of Iran support the fall of the theocracy, but not an Israeli occupation.

January 9, 2013 - The House prepares to vote for the new President.

January 12, 2013 - Voting in the Senate for a new Vice President is held.  The most popular candidate is Bill Nelson, although Scott Brown, Russ Feingold, and Eric Cantor are also mentioned as possibilities.

January 17, 2013 - 17 days after the disaster in New York, clearing crews begin moving into Manhattan to clear debris.  It has been confirmed the explosion took place on a small container ship docked at Roosevelt Island, which was utterly destroyed in the explosion.  FEMA says that 170,000 bodies have been recovered (very few identified), and more than 500,000 are still missing.

February 2013

February 3, 2013 - American forces begin facing heavy resistance by Al-Qaeda forces in western Pakistan. 

February 5, 2013 - Indian military officials confirm that American born Al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn was captured in a village on the outskirts of Karachi on January 28.  Gadahn, who faces charges of treason, is expected to be transported to the United States to stand trial in the coming weeks.

February 8, 2013 - Indian forces march into Islamabad, an open city.  It is reported that President Musharraf has retreated into the mountains.

February 19, 2013 - President Clinton travels to Dallas, Texas to give a speech about domestic terrorism.  As she leaves the Dallas Convention Center, an angry protester and evangelical, John Carlson, pulled out a gun and fired four shots in quick succession at the President.  Carlson was a Gulf War veteran, and a supporter of John Thune.  It was later revealed he was involved in Texan militia groups.  He was tackled by Secret Service agents, while President Clinton was thrown into the Presidential Limousine.

Once in the car, it was revealed that President Clinton was critically injured.  She had been wounded three times; one bullet traveled through her leg, one traveled through her pancreas and lodged into her liver, and one traveled through her liver.  The President was rushed to Parkland Hospital, where she was immediately rushed to surgery.  After eight hours of surgery, her wounds were sealed.  While President Clinton was in surgery, Vice President Scott Brown was declared Acting President of the United States.

The President was in shock and had lost nearly half of her blood.  After being stabilized she was transferred to the Critical Care Unit.  The President was in and out of consciousness, and was given a 50% survival rate. 

February 20, 2013 - President Clinton's vitals improved and she remained conscious.  She was given a 60% chance of surviving.  However, that night, the wounds on her liver opened up and she began bleeding profusely internally.  She could not be stabilized, and was pronounced dead at 1:21 A.M. on February 21, 2013, of internal hemorrhaging brought on by a gunshot wound.

February 21, 2013 - As Scott Brown was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, the world was in a state of shock.  President Clinton was expected to survive.  Now, in a time of crisis, the Free World had a new leader.

February 27, 2013 - Citing strong evidence of the location of Osama bin-Laden, President Brown ordered a massive offensive on a small unnamed village in the mountains of Pakistan.  The forces that moved on the city faced extreme resistance by Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces. 

The fighting soon ceased with American forces winning.  In the basement of a building in the center of the village, Osama bin-Laden was found, alive.  He emerged from the basement battered and bruised, but very much alive.

At 6:00 P.M., President Brown released a statement announcing the capture of bin-Laden.

February 28, 2013 - Over the past 24 hours, news has spread of bin-Laden's capture.  Al-Qaeda resistance has largely collapsed without their face leader.

I'm not accusing you of anything.  However, I am not aware of any law that has been passed that allows the House and Senate to elect a new president and vice president when those elected have died before inauguration.  As things stand now, legally, I would expect the Speaker of the House to become Predient and then, under the 25th Amendment, nominate a new Vice President.

But, I am really enjoying what you have written.  Make no mistake, it is fantastic and I applaud your insight and originality.

I didn't understand what you meant.

I'll admit I'm not a constitutional expert.  I interpreted that Amendment as implying that if the P-Elect and VP-Elect had died, Congress would vote on it.

I'm not sure if this TL is going to continue.  As of now, it is indefinitly suspended as I write my "A Dream Fulfilled" timeline.  I might make an update every now and then, but it will only be semi-active.

This was my first TL, and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Maybe. It's shocking, but extremely addictive!! Wonder what the whole world would say and do if they found Bin Laden in Pakistan and that the Pakistani government was helping him in some way?
