Title: paul tsongas wins the 92 dem nomination..
Post by: WalterMitty on March 14, 2004, 05:14:57 PM
bill clinton is forced to drop out of the race after the gennifer flowers allegation.  tsongas easily wins the nh primary and coasts to the nomination over weak competition.

what happens in the general election vs. bush?

some things to consider:

1.  does perot get in the race since tsongas centers his campaign around fiscal responsibility?

2. who does tsongas pick as his running mate?

We got real lucky that Tsongas was never president, although he would have been a good president for the two years he could have served. Tsongas strikes me as a wiser second coming of Mondale, and America needed a young president in 1992.

Tsongas was a great man and in fact I would have vote for him in the primeries. He  may lack charisma but was an effective leader, with economic sense as well as concern for all.

there are 2 scenarios: he beats Bush serve one term and do not tun again due to illness. His veep Clinton serve 2 terms (1996, 2000) and we get 2004 election night the one we really got in 2000.
other possibility: he win reelection, die 1/18/97 (as he did) 2 days befor his 2nd term started and from here its Clinton and option 1 again

I always thought Tsongas was old. I also thought he died in 94' or so. I didn't know he made it through Clinton's first term.

hmmm, technically he didn't
now if the republicans had won in 1996, then Tsongas's VP would have become president for two days, then the Republican
a 2 day president . . . that would have been something

what happens in the general election vs. bush?

Tsongas would have lost.

At that time he seemed to be more conservative on economic issues than Clinton was, so a lot of the more liberal voters would have just been scared off.

Would the Lewinsky scandal still surface at the same time? in that case Clinton might have problems by 2000...and considering that Gore lost in 2000 with a booming economy it seems very likely that he'd have lost in 2004 with a declinign one.

Tsongas (my candidate for the nomination in 1992) would have won but now by the margin that Clinton did.

As long as Tsongas was pro-NAFTA too, it doesn't really matter, because that means Perot runs and creates a feeling of change, which means the Dems win.

2. who does tsongas pick as his running mate?

let's hope anyone as unhealthy as Tsongas would have chosen well...

1) You cannot assume the Tsongas would have won if he had sought the nomination.  Remember, people voted Clinton because they were drawn to the youth, vitality and charisma of his campaign.  Tsongas lacked, or at least lacked the appearance of ALL 3.

2) He never would have picked Clinton as a running-mate, come on.  He probably would have picked Brown or possibly Gore.
