Currently trying to figure out what "infraction points" mean now with the current system for y'all!  Put an inquiry in to Dave.

It seems like we've stretched out the system like 5-10 fold, and I have no idea how infractions given before we could rate things on a 1-10 scale fit in with what's currently going down, they probably either count as 0 or 1 but I'm not sure!*

Rest assured, as soon as I know how the current system even works [as I said in the other thread, I hadn't even realized that Dave had changed our profiles so we could see this], I'll post some thread publicly in the Alas forum supposing Dave doesn't do so first.

So I'm not sure what that last statistic even means!

Yeah, that pretty much confirms that all posts that received infractions prior to like two-three days ago currently count as 0 infraction points.

I'm of the strong opinion they should expire.  No poster who receives three infractions a year should ever see a warning of any kind.

You might notice that over half of Libby's reported posts haven't been acted on.

I'd love to see Rochambeau's stats.

I think the stats show pretty clear that there are people who obsessively over-report my posts in the hopes that something will stick.

There are a lot of people's stats that I'd like to see, especially the stats of a lot of posters who are sadly no longer here.

As I said earlier in this thread, everyone will have a "0" under infraction points unless you've done something like in the last 48 hours.  I expect that to be ignored.

I'm 8-0 fwiw.  Around two-three reports from before I was a moderator, with no infractions, and any of the remaining ones that I'm aware of were either jokes or things I'm unaware of...and I read 95% of what goes through the moderation board, can't seem to recall all 5-6 remainders atm.  Shows how deadly serious every "point" is [read: not at all].

Aye, good memory.  I feel like a tool whenever I write about doing something on my "Droid" so I'm forced to say "phone" or "mobile phone." When I get off work I have to walk many avenues on my way to the subway, and from the subway home, so it's sometimes my first window of opportunity to evaluate reports etc.  Other times my phone buzzes to let me know I have a new report, and if the post in question seems outlandish and is reported by someone who rarely reports infractions or I otherwise very much trust, it'll make more sense to delete & then read the whole thread later when I have the time than to ignore something which looks to be an attack/whatevsky sit there for five hours and pick up steam and derail a thread.  It's a source of some of my mistakes, and a reason why I encourage people to reasonably challenge any of my infractions they disagree with.

In general, I don't contemplate for THAT long about anything I do, so I end up not giving infractions in cases where I probably should have as well as the opposite.

Because it was a troll magnet and rather than hand out a bunch of 2 or more point infractions while weeding out posts, I went ahead and deleted the whole thing. (There were already several replies that would have gained infractions had I not felt generous lazy.) If you want to discuss whether a specific president was a white supremacist, go ahead, but that topic was so open-ended it attracted trolls.  Given the nature of some of our less charming posters, I wouldn't have been surprised if someone had claimed Obama was our latest white supremacist president.

I think I have the lowest ratio. Clearly people are out to get me.

Actually Lunar, I have never seen a post of yours (and that seems like zillions and zillions) that was remotely "reportable."  :)

One of Loony's reports was from me for the same reason as he reports me...reporting a post on one of Dave's boards is the only way to guarantee he sees something.  (It was the post when Loony said he cried himself to sleep over HoffmanJohn).

opebo was still an extremely controversial figure when I joined the forum 4+ years ago. Now, he's just a classic part of the boards that almost everyone appreciates.

6-2-0. One of them was an inappropriate work-around of the filter on a particularly derogatory word and I think the other one was a link to an auto-felatio site that for some reason Alcon didn't approve of.

BTW out of my 5 deleted ones I think two were workarounds of the profanity filter (a very small percentage of my posts where I did so.), the other three I believe were anti-Ireland/anti-Catholic. A year or so ago I got a warning for jokingly using the term "Papist" and there was a crusade (no pun intended) to ban me over an anti-Pope username I had. Pretty sensitive and politically correct forum really.

Imagine if the system was around during that whole Lance McSteel/Pravada/etc. thing? Haha. (What were the names of the other two or three main ones?)

I mean with the amount of uber politicially correct twats it's shocking some of you don't even have one post (considering that some of you have posting histories) reported.
By the way, and I believe the mods can back me up on this one, I have never reported anybody in my entire history on this forum (even though some of you were really asking for it).  SO if you have one less post than you think you deserve, that is why.  Mechaman is truly merciful.

This also brings me to another point:
I talked to Kalwejt and it seems that in the past few days he's been hit by like a wave of moderated posts........FROM LIKE ALMOST 7 GODDAMN MONTHS AGO.  Now consider this possibility: That some poster might have it out for Kalwejt (or anybody else for that matter) and they decide to go through Kalwejt's posting history to look for offensive posts.  Now suppose that they report enough posts that get moderated to get Kalwejt either into mod review or banned.......you get the picture?
Now I know Kalwejt isn't a well liked guy from some of us, but what if this were to happen to someone more respectable, like PiT?  What if suddenly a few days from now PiT gets a bunch of reported posts from say a year ago that gets him into mod review and once he's out of mod review the same pathetic SOB who reported PiT the first time goes back to two year old posts and reports PiT even more to the point of getting him banned?
A hypothetical, but still very possible given the setup........
I want this reporting system to be fair and not something that can be used by one poster to declare war against other forumers so they can make them "internet dead".

That shouldn't be happening, and if it does to anyone, contact the moderator involved.  Considering that infractions themselves expire after 3 months, it would be improper for any moderator to count those, but we can make mistakes.  Those infractions would be very likely to be rescinded.

But, again, the only person I can remember going through another poster's history and reporting 3+ month old posts is, ironically enough, Kalwejt...

I don't know what he's talking about, as I went through every REPORT against him in June, not even counting infractions [I think - may have missed one or two], for the entire month of June, and I didn't see one that wasn't for a post of his in the month of June, let alone from 2009 as you imply...so I just don' see the "wave" that you're talking about.

I think I may have reported ECR once because he kept bumping the same thread every two minutes, but that's  about it.

I couldn't imagine reporting a post because I was "offended" by something. It just seems like you'd have to be a complete bitch of epic proportions. Of course now Libertas is getting infraction points for saying "you lose", that's a different kind of bitchiness....

The notion that reporting posts is somehow whiny or equivalent to telling on someone is a bit strange to me.

Its sorta like being in grade school again.  At times, there are some legitimate gripes (bullying etc) which need to be addressed and at others you have a whiny little kid who's going to complain to the teacher everytime someone offends him/her.  It seems lately we have a lot more of the latter than the former.

Turns out it was neither of these (although I definitely got a warning from Leip on the first one but I guess it was so long ago that it's not in The System). Both of these moderated ones were usage of the ever evil word that begins with the letter F and apparently that word makes Lunar uncomfortable. But he was kind enough to modify the post in such a way to keep my intentions clear. He's still a little bitch though.

How do punishments work even? Is a certain number of infraction points necessary for being put on mod review or being banned from the forum or something?

Haha so my moderated ones were calling BRTD a moron for opposing Puerto Rican statehood under the circumstances that they vote Republican and for deriding the Catholic church for its sex scandals.  A personal attack and trolling.  If those were my worst, then I can only imagine how stupid the other two must be.  All definitely "whiny" and "telling on" me.

Fezzy, it's certainly not against the rules.  It's important to remember that all infractions prior to Monday earlier this week no longer "count" too.  I'm hoping we get a more rational & reasonable system going forward, although I'm worried that posters are going to trip out about insignificant judgments calls we make that don't actually impact the trajectory a poster is on.  Really, at any given time, there are only one to three posters at serious risk for mod review, and only one poster at risk for banning ... and it really isn't a surprise who those people are.  The idea that any poster who's been established here for years is secretly at risk for a poke in the thigh, let alone mod review, is kind of laughable ... I mean, I think we have one or two moderators who would get mod review before Mechaman or Opebo do [despite their claims].

I'm thinking we should have done things as fractions instead of expanding the "points" people get, to avoid alarm.  Because, like, "two points" sounds awfully bad, but it's actually the second least amount we can give.  I'd have preferred the system give like "0.1" points instead of "1 point" just so people can keep things in perspective.



Yeah, something like that, the numbers haven't actually been created.  So, I think you can get ten thousand points and nothing will happen automatically [yet].  There will be an announcement in Dave's thread on the Atlas Board when something is actually developed.


I'm really not sure what the ideal amounts should be, now that two reports of invasive privacy attacks or harassment can get you 20 points, the same amount as 20 minor ones.


If you have any input on this, by the way, use Dave's thread on the Atlas Board.  I think he's very likely to read it and, regardless, I promise me & other mods will, and I will take good ideas and advocate for them.

It should be pretty easy for a lot of us to figure out who reported our posts from now on if you check your stats on a daily basis. For instance, when I made a post this morning in this thread correcting which of my posts had been moderated I had six reported posts. Since that time I've made only one new post which was about Libertas' fetish of Rand Paul. Lo and behold, I now have seven reported posts! Who could've reported that post?!?

edit: It seems like you have had three reports recently, one where the moderated deleted the post but didn't give any "points," and two where the moderators involved haven't made a decision, but I'd be personally rather surprised if they were anything but "no infraction."  So it should be +3?


Alas, such is the case for our normal posters, that some quick judgment calls we made, which never had much of a chance of getting to light [a "warning"] with the previous system, get viewed with such seriousness.

Anyway, as I've said a lot, going forward, y'all should feel free to politely contact a moderator if you feel any of those judgment calls were too silly, and we'll review it and rescind/justify it.

I'm your one stop shop for all such things, although I only will say who it was in particularly obtuse instances....but you're in luck!  Politicaladdict reported one of your posts that didn't make any sense at all.

It WOULD count [when "counting" actually has an effect on this forum again, not the case just yet!] if the moderator didn't realize it was from 7 months ago, but, you know, with a report we get an email which has the appearances of recentness, and sometimes we make mistakes and whatnot, but I can't imagine any moderator here not rescinding such a mistake when contacted.

So, yeah, complain to us if we ever mark a post older than two months as an infraction, although there's no official policy regarding such a thing, I don't think any of us feel such an old bugger of a post should deserve any infraction.

Any post older than 3 months, almost certainly should never receive an infraction, as 3 months is the expiration date Dave assigned for infractions themselves.  Anything older than that is either a mistake or a policy implemented by another mod which I do not understand, but most of us would rescind such a case and I would debate any other mod on the issue if they disagreed [unlikely].

You can see that I was clearly talking about posting entire articles in violating of copyright rules, which is something I have yet to report you for. Though I don't doubt I'll be able to at the rate you do it.

I only started reporting a lot after the new policies when it could get people banned. It worked in getting Hamilton banned so I figure I'd try it on Libertas. I reported next to nothing pre-2010.

This thread is developing nicely.

You might be able to give him a few infractions, but there's not enough material by BRTD for such an event to occur.  It would probably be considered abusing the reporting system if you reported like 40 posts of BRTD's in a week and 95% of them were judged to be no infraction.  BRTD doesn't even count for a majority of Libertas's reports.  I count 9 different reporters of his posts for him in the month of June.

I have to say that it's not especially fun to have to make constant judgment calls when people report grey-area type posts that make a vague attack but aren't especially nasty.  

As you can see from Libertas's numbers, the vast majority, around 80, of his reports have resulted in no infraction being counted, so it's not like we mindlessly accept every report.

Additionally, I'd like to think that there should be an expiration date for all but the worst of infractions (If you posted hard-core porn, a serious privacy invasion, etc) of around a month, although I don't think there's a formal rule about that.  I'm quite glad that Dave decided to let "points" expire after three months, but I'd like to see reports not "count" if the report is past a  certain date....actually, I'm going to go suggest that right now on the mod board

The problem with the new system is the low shelf life for infraction points. It seems it penalizes those who go on a particularly dickish rampage for a short period of time for whatever reason, but those who are chronic prickish boils on the forum can just survive on and on and on so long as they know enough to periodically keep their head down. Those consistant SOB's who perpetually drain more from the forum then they add to it are the ones most in need of sanction.

Would Hammy have ever been banned under this version?

Towards the end, Hammy was posting over 200 posts a day, many of which were worthless.  While I wasn't a moderator at the time, I'm sure that if the current system was in place the mods of the time would get him Muted very quickly.

I agree with Badger, but I think it's kind of relevant to note that these unpleasant side-effects may be intentional.  The Man may actually want to restrict our hands in all cases except short-term spam flooders.  

People who systemically troll, attack, etc., while oh-so-conscious of the rules are going to be exempt, and I'm not sure what there is to do about it.  The system is designed to catch people who are either unaware of their trolling or don't care if they're trolling, it's going to let slip through every poster who is aware and cares, but still wants to troll.

I think if Hamilton were able to hypothetically appear for the first time tomorrow, we'd have a far harder time banning him, despite something close to an infinite amount of evidence justifying that decision.  You can see that consciousness in all of his pathetic sock accounts, if he weren't such a loser and transparently obvious, things would be tougher for us in banning each one.  

We've only had the infraction system for a month and a half or so, maybe two months at max, no ones points have expired yet.  I think it's hard to deny that it's not a flawed system, but it's a more transparent system and a more fair system.

Your guess is as good as mine.  My only point was that he may want to create a system where someone could post 20 provocative, borderline posts a day attacking other posters and saying offensive things, and face no consequences so long as the poster is aware of what he's doing and how to exploit the system, but where  intentional spam flooders get shut down, maybe not immediately, but over a few weeks in the worst case scenarios.

It's useful for us to be able to know when a legitimate reported post occurs.  Many, many, many times, being able to quickly delete something crazy stupid [i.e. "Of course Barack Obama supports socialism, all black people do!"] makes our lives *much* easier than stumbling onto the report several hours later after it's derailed an entire thread.  Personally, every report on my board makes my phone go *buzz*, so I know about it instantly.  

If you report something on the Forum Community board as a joke, three different people receive annoying emails and a thread is created on the moderation board where you are the author, and the report is the subject.

Joe Republic turned his off.  I'm really starting to think of doing the same.  I can catch up on the reports here and I don't need half a dozen emails from Kalwejt and BRTD reporting each other every day.

News to me.  I pushed him up from 93 or so to the 116 points he's at now after he trolled my boards, presumably inebriated, last Friday, and he got muted, I think Dave must have translated that to a ban in the last 24 hours.  

Cool beans though.  I had to do a lot of whining about Derek doing basically the same thing but being not only unmuted but taken off mod review, despite being well over 100, for no apparent reason, for him to be banned.

That was me earlier today, sorry[ish].  You bumped a few old threads with like zero content, posts like I think one was a month+ old thread about breakfast that you bumped just to say "nothing." as the entire content of your post.  Why bump a thread to announce that you have nothing to say?  I agreed with no infraction being taken, but at the time I was very grumpy after being soaked in rain and hit with tourists' umbrellas.

Basically what happened was when I clicked report post, I got a box where I then wrote something in. Then I clicked "send" or something like that, except the report box still remained (probably because my computer slowed down) and thus I clicked send numerous times because I thought that my report wasn't going to get sent. I thought that I only reported Libertas once. And it's just like when you try to open a website or a link, except that website or link doesn't open the first time you click and thus you keep on clicking until it does open. That's essentially what I did because I thought that my report of Libertas didn't go through.

If you consider over 50 thousand posts of someone calling states jokes, hating suburbs, raging against how there are not enough strip clubs in the world and only typing about how much Republicans suck without significantly typing about actual policy, then he has certainly contributed much more than me.

The person you are referring to is neither a psychopath or sociopath and while we are on the subject, what you are doing could very well amount to libel.  If I were you, I'd be nervous about committing such libel.  You n ever know if said person could be a reactionary or have the money to hire a lawyer to take you to court over said libel.  Personally, if it were me, I wouldnt even bother to deal with (to me) is something very insignificant and funny but you never know what legal action people are capable of when it comes to defending the character of their name.

I can't seem to manage to get an infraction point, despite my request that I rack up a couple, just to de-fang all this silliness once and for all. I am enough of an egomaniac, to think that if I can rack them up, then it will be made crystal clear that it is not a scarlet letter kind of thing. We all know who the real problems, or were, and who are not. And almost all of us are not "real problems" at all. That is one reason why this forum is special. Plus we have enough good role models, that i think  it helps truncate what might otherwise be incipient problems. Just my take on matters.
