Crazy that the Pacific Governor has the second-worst approval rating. I'm used to seeing Pacific officeholders with 100% approval.

maybe, maybe not. :P
2/6 disapproved in your region, 4/6 approve, not exactly terrible numbers. Your in the positives, the only governor in the negatives at the moment is Rowan.

Interview with Governor Tmthfu94:
By Jbrase

Jbrase - Thank you for participating in The Porcupine's first interview. Is there anything you'd like to say before we start?

tmthforu94 - I just want to thank you, JBrase, for allowing me to do this interview. I look forward to answering your questions!

Question 1:
When you first got involved in Atlasia, what did you see yourself becoming?

Answer:    When I first got involved, my dream was simply to get into the Mideast Assembly and have fun in the position. I never would have dreamed that I would one day be it's Senator and then Governor.

Question 2:
Describe the state in which the Mideast was in prior to your governorship, and how it is currently?

Answer:
Before my term began, I would say the Mideast had become complacement with many not wanting to change much about our double-digit unemployment. When I ran for office, I laid out a plan for the Mideast. Several pillars of my platform have been implemented, but we still have a lot of work to do. It doesn't help that it's summer either, and everyone's going on vacation. I would say the one thing this region has improved on is ambition. I'm excited for this next session, because I believe this Assembly is just as ready as I am to improve this region's economy. We're going to start that by actually having a budget. We're going to build off that budget, and hopefully by the end of this year our unemployment numbers will be below 10%.

Question 3:
What is your opinion on the state of the DA? Are the party's best days behind it?

Answer: While we have managed to maintain a stable number over the past year or so, other parties are growing. I think it's increasingly difficult for the Democratic Alliance to be a gamechanger when we represent less than 10% of the population. For this party to succeed, I think we have to delevop a stronger message on what we're about.

I am concerned that our party's best days could be behind us. A lot of current or potential members are being quickly drawn to other parties, and we are quickly falling behind. One move and we could be destroyed

Question 4:
What are your thoughts on the Purple State administration, more specifically, his appointment of a communist/marxist as SoIA, and Al as GM?

Answer:
I admire the Purple State/Marokai Blue administration on their hard work. I think that both of them sincerely care about the positions they hold and are trying to make the most of it. While I don't agree with either of them a lot politically, they are active, and I like that about them.

As to the appointments of Al and Winston, only time will tell. I'm not sure if I would have appointed either of them, given that I don't believe that the positions either men hold represent the views of Atlasians. I think both Al and Winston are off to pretty good starts, and I'm anxious to see what actions both men take over the next two months.

question 5:
Speaking of Secretary Winston, are the rumors true that at one time you were considering being his running mate for a presidential election? and in retrospect would you still have wanted to be his running mate?

Answer:
As a matter of fact, Winston and I did have a tentative agreement where I would be his Vice President. However, we also agreed that if Afleitch ran for reelection the deal would be off. That's the main reason it never panned out.

In retrospect, no, I wouldn't have. Assuming he still left the Populares and did a political turnaround, I think our ticket would have really struggled to get votes and wouldn't of had a clear message.

Question 6:

Are you aware that in less than an hour the Region currently known as the Southeast/Dirty South, will amend the regions constitution, in effect becoming The Imperial Dominion of the South? what are your thoughts on this revolution in awesomeness?

Answer:
I am aware. I've never been a huge fan of the name changing, but I guess to each his own. Everyone has a right to their own decision, and if it ever happened in the Mideast, I'd respect the will of the people.

question 7:
What are your future plans?

answer:
For now, I plan on working with the Assembly this session to create a better region. In the coming days, I'll decide whether or not I'll seek reelection to the Governor's mansion and go from there. :-)

Question 8:
What are your thoughts of the Constitutional convention going on? and what specificly do you want it to accomplish?

Answer:
I am generally supportive of the Constitutional convention. I think Purple State and Marokai Blue have a good plan, and if the convention can follow that plan, it should be successful. In the end, I'd like for Atlasia to have an easy to read constitution where we don't have pages and pages of amendments to sift through to determine what is legal and what is not.

Question 9:
Now for a peak into the future. Are you looking at possible presidential run in the future? If so, and if in your view it seems beyond repair, would you consider leaving the DA while doing so?

Answer:

I think that just about everyone in Atlasia has their sights set on the Presidency. ;-) So yes, it is something I have seriously considered on multiple occasions. However, it certainly wouldn't be my main reason if I ever left the DA. Right now I truely want to see the Democratic Alliance prosper. We'll just have to wait and see if that happens.

Question 10: You mentioned earlier about your plan to turn around the ME's unemployment problem. Would you like to elaborate to the readers the steps you have and plan to take to meet this goal?

Answer
Of course. I want a market-friendly environment for businesses to meet their daily needs and grow. I think cutting taxes could do just that, which is why I support lowering taxes on capital gains and investments.
Something I have been working with Assemblyman A-Bob on is the building blocks of our budget. One of our key points is to invest heavily in our infrastructure. We believe that is a fast way to provide relief to many struggling families in Atlasia.

Finally, I support a tax credit boasted by the Purple State/Marokai Blue administration that gives businesses with less than 200 employees a tax credit for each new employee they hire. That recently passed on a national level, and I expect it to benefit our unemployment problem as well as the nation's unemployment issue.

Yet another lawsuit involving the Imperial Dominion of the South

Ernest was recently found unconscious in room 101 of an abandoned warehouse, witnesses last saw him being drug into a white van.

In other news...

Ernest, a former legislator for the I.D.S. has challenged the region's authority to change the title of it's chief executive from Governor to Emperor. The Porcupine will be closely following this case.

by Dallasfan65

Question 1:
What is it like to be a Mutant Communist in Space?

Answer:
It's no good, we are all mad from irradiated vodka.

Question 2:
The Porcupine. Great newspaper, or the greatest?

Answer:
Great.

Question 3:
Since your time in Atlasia, you have been a resident of several regions. Which is your favorite?

Answer:
The Midwest, the Northeast was nice too, but I hated the boring do nothing Pacific.

Question 4:
As many know, the Midwest has created it's own legislature recently, the 'Albing', in which you have been active. Who are your favorite members to work with?

Answer:
Everyone!

Question 5:
Finally... What are your thoughts on Fritz's brand new lawsuit against the Midwest?

Answer:

I disapprove of that treason.

Interview with Oakvale
by Dallasfan65

Question 1: So, despite being relatively new to Atlasia, you quickly ascended to the Governor's mansion. When you first registered, what were your expectations?

Answer: I don't know, really. I wasn't very ambitious at first, I was just checking out the game. :)

I got involved in Atlasia proper when Antonio V signalled that he'd be resigning and it was suggested that I run for the Lt. Governor's position. I thought that being Lt. Governor of the Pacific would be an interesting diversion, and give me something to do now and again.

Needless to say, I certainly didn't expect to become Governor soon, if ever.

Question 2:
Recently, Xahar launched a challenge against you. How do you feel the campaign has been so far?

Uneventful, in a word, at least so far, but that's the Pacific for you. It's, uh, pacific.

Fortunately, Jbrase has offered to host a debate between Xahar and I that I look forward to, so hopefully that will liven things up a bit. I'm glad that I've got someone to run against, which is more than you can say for the Pacific a lot of the time...

I should add that I'm optimistic about my chances of winning the election, but I'm not taking it for granted by any means. I'm hoping to use the debate as a platform to make a clear case for re-electing (or just plain electing, in my case) ArchangelZero and I.

Dallas: That's good - I hope you guys run a clean campaign.

Question 3: Under your tenure, there's been an increase in activity in the Pacific - including a Pacific Hiring Incentives Act passed. Are there other things you feel that the Pacific ought to address, within the region?

Answer: There's a lot of issues we need to address, obviously. The unemployment problem springs to mind - the PHIA is a step in the right direction, but we need to go further.  One thing I'm going to do in the coming weeks is trawl through the region's statute looking for any particularly egregious regulation we can roll back in an effort to make the Pacific more business friendly, and, ergo, increase hiring.

On another level, I've proposed creating a dedicated government position to manage wiki articles relating to the Pacific. I'm going to wait until I'm elected in my own right before introducing the relevant legislation, but I think it's a good idea, and, if it works, the federal government should pay attention.

I'm also toying with the idea of bringing back the long abolished Pacific Chief Justice position, but that could be messy...

Question 4: What are your thoughts on the Purple State Administration?

Answer: I certainly approve overall.

I entered Atlasia during the unfortunately inactive term of alfeitch's Presidency, so it's a welcome change to have an engaged administration. :)

There have been stumbles, of course - Secretary Constine's gaffe on the French burqa ban, for example, the appointment of a Maoist to a government position - but overall I thik PS and co are doing a fine job.

That said, how the ConCon turns out will ultimately define Purple State's administration, so I, like others, will be waiting to see the results.

Question 5: Assuming you get re-elected as Governor, what are your future plans in Atlasia? Any higher aspirations?

Answer: I imagine that the thought of higher office of some kind crosses every Atlasian's mind at some point, but, for now, I'm happy working as Governor of the Pacific.

I did briefly consider running for the Senate as Lt. Governor, but that was before I ascended to the Governor's mansion, so that obviously became irrelevant.

At some point in the future, I wouldn't rule out a run for national office, but that's all academic at this stage. ;)

Interview with Xahar
by Dallasfan65

Question 1: It is well known that there is a rivalry between you and the Jesus Christ Party. What, would you say, is the cause of this?

Answer:
Well, when I joined Atlasia I saw that the JCP controlled my home region. I found the idea of that monolithic control rather repulsive, particularly with an organization named after its leader. I resolved to oppose that, and the Dear Leader tolerates no opposition, so the breach was inevitable.

Question 2:
Recently, you declared your candidacy against the incumbent Governor, Oakvale. What are your thoughts on the campaign thus far, and what would you plan to do as Governor?

Answer:
I wish there could be a campaign, but given that my defeat is inevitable, a campaign seems like a waste of time. If by some sort of warp in the space-time continuum I were elected, I would try to replace the Legislature with a real elective Legislature. The way it is now, a small clique of active voters and JCP zombies controls the Legislature, and voter interest and participation are both low. Even in the rare cases where that is not the case, as in the recent election for a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, voter knowledge is practically nil. For that reason, the Pacific recently embarrassed itself by sending a zombie to the Constitutional Convention on the back of the zombie vote. Nor is this a new problem: when I came to Atlasia, I did not even know I was allowed to vote in the Legislature. I am sure that the same is true for many new Pacificans. Elections to a small legislature would allow new Pacificans to get involved in the process and also give lawmaking to a representative sample of the people, rather than whoever is involved enough to vote or reliable enough to be PMed to vote.

Question 3:
You previously ran for President of Atlasia in February 2010 - what was the experience like?

Answer:
It wasn't as rewarding as I had hoped, obviously. I started out with high hoped, but by early February I had realized it wasn't happening. I really ran after that just to ccarry the LNF banner. Near the end, of course, we were beset by running-mate problems and such. But my loss wasn't exactly traumatizing (I'm no stranger to losing), and it was a good expeerience to be running a national campaign.

Question 4: What is your opinion of the Purple State administration?

Answer:
I was out of town last week, so I'm a bit out of the loop, but my opinion is generally positive. The jury is out on the Constitutional Convention, but the remainder of the legislative agenda has been, I think, unassailable.

The appointments, which sparked a furor when they were made, haven't been bad, either. Although I wish that Hashemite had had the opportunity to continue his work in the Department of External Affairs, I think that benconstine has done a commendable job as his replacement. He has demonstrated the same openness and determination that made his predecessor so good; I have had the opportunity to talk to him in the course of his work, and I would encourage others to avail themselves of the same.

Question 5: In the past, you were Governor of the Southeast. What is your opinion of the name change, and also of Ernest's lawsuit?

Answer: I think that both are amusing. The game needs some silliness from time to time, and this matter delivers.

Question 6: Finally... The Porcupine: Freedom Paper or Horrible Paper?

Answer: FP

Perhaps it is not too late to prevent the fine folks over at the Constitutional Convention from finding out about all of this.  Nothing ruins an infiltration of zombies like a pesky know-it-all who just had to let the cat out of the bag.

Interview with Winston D'israeli
by Dallasfan65

Question 1: Recently, you were confirmed as Secretary of Internal Affairs. What made you desire the position, and how do you feel about your work so far?

Answer: Well, I had always wanted a role in the economy anyway, given that it was an area of special interest to me. So when Purple State offered me the position, I jumped at the chance to be SoIA. So far, I feel I've helped create some discussion of policy, but there is still plenty more work to be done and I look forward to working with the Cabinet upon it.

Question 2: Previously, you served as Senator. How would you describe your tenure in office, and what legislation during that session was your favorite?

Answer: Early on, while still a POP member, I authored much legislation to further the cause of that party. Afterwards however, I did very little simply because of the whole issue of me being 'illegitimate' or whatever. My favourite session was probably the one over oil nationalization, simply because it created vibrant discussion which I feel put new life into the Senate.

Question 3: In your earlier days, you were one of the first Atlasians to join the ARC. What was the experience like?

Answer:
Varied - It was enjoyable being part of a new force in Atlasian politics on one side, but at the same time, it was not very nice having the whole issue of Hamilton lurking over the party, and us not being recognized by... well... pretty much anyone as legitimate. Also, the whole party structure was pretty authoritarian. Hamilton was pretty much the Grand Poobah so it didn't allow for much independence.

Question 4:
Do you approve of your boss, thus far?

Answer: Well, if you're referring to Purple State, I'd say yeah overall. He's made a few compromises I would rather he hadnt, but overall he's proved to be a good president who has actually implemented new policy, which is always good to see. He's doing a good role of shaping the executive role in government.

Question 5: You recently moved to the Midwest Region. How do you like it?

Answer: It's been alright so far. A bit crazy but that's the Midwest for you :P Can't say I have any strong opinions either way as of yet.

Question 6: Finally... Dallasfan65, HP or MEGA HP?

Answer: Asking that question implies that this is in fact a two way choice, which is in fact a false dichtomy as there are a whole plethora of options which I may choose to hold about whether 'Dallasfan' is a 'HP' or 'MEGA-HP' [/gully]

Nah, you're an alright guy :P Bad politics, but can't be helped I guess ;)

Interview with Sam Spade
by hantheguitarman

Question 1: You are currently the Chief Justice of the Atlasia Supreme Court. Is this the highest office that you plan to achieve in Atlasia?

I don't think the citizens of Atlasia would exactly want me in any higher office and I concur.

Besides, didn't you get the memo - this is the highest office in Atlasia!  Trying challenging my decisions.

Question 2: Ernest, a former legislator for the Imperial Dominion of the South has challenged the region's authority to change the title of it's chief executive from Governor to Emperor. What are your thoughts on the lawsuit? If you were to make a ruling on it, what way do you see yourself ruling?

I hate to make comments on pending litigation that might be before the Court, even though Ernest has presently not indicated any willingness to continue pursuing his case yet.

That being said, the titles themselves are quite stupid, imo.  Can't we revert to just naming our Region its proper name - the Confederate States of Atlasia?

Question 3: What are your thoughts on Junkie's Atlasia Law Journal? Do you agree with his articles?

I am happy to see someone trying to analyze and synthesize our decisions, as disjointed as they often look and seem.  Moreover, I was recently amused at being compared to Justice Stevens.  I don't know whether I agree with his articles, but that's not the point - rather, his ideas are quite valid and worthy of consideration, that says enough.

I am also quite grateful that he recently brought his case (which we ruled against him - see most powerful office strikes again!), because his arguments and certain parts of the Bono v. Atlasia II decision needed to be addressed, in my view.

In short, he should continue and do more, not less.

Question 4: What are your thoughts on the Purple State Administration? If you had to give them a grade, what grade would that be?

I don't agree with everything they've done, but at least they've been active and willing, more than I can say for a lot of administrations.  So I guess a B?

That being said, letting ilikeverin into the Constitutional Convention is pretty much one of the dumbest ideas ever.

Question 5: You currently reside in the Southeast/Dirty South, which is now known as the Imperial Dominion of the South. Do you approve of this name change?

See above - Jefferson Davis is rolling over in his grave at the sight of these changes.

Question 6: What are your thoughts on the current Constitutional Convention? Do you approve?

Most of the changes being made are superficial, rather than substantive changes, so if they pass, little will change.  I tend to be opposed to change, especially change without reason, so in general I support this.  But I think they could be doing more than just that in some places.

Of course, even those superficial changes, as I have examined them, will create important substantive changes that, as usual, the drafters are unaware of at this time.  Entirely expected.

Question 7: Pirates or Ninjas?

Pirates always struck me as a little bit fruity, since they're out on the sea all the time.  So, ninjas I guess, even though I don't like the Japanese and hated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Supreme Court and the IDS: The Front Lines of Atlasian Politics

The Supreme Court of Atlasia and the Imperial Dominion of the South are currently both the scenes of battles that will have a serious impact on the future of this great nation. In the court lies the potential for a Marxist-Tweedist coup that would oust President-elect Napoleon in favor of failed presidential hopeful Boss "Young" Tweed. Tweed cites the general welfare section of the Atlasian Constitution's preamble, claiming that it is the duty of the Supreme Court to declare Tweed the President-elect as Napoleon would go against the general welfare of the people (not to be confused with The People). The SoFE as well as most sane Atlasian call BS however and have faith the court will do the same.

In the IDS is an effort to extend southern voting rights to all southerners. The Southern Unity Amendment sponsored by Representative and former Emperor Jbrase would allow those who have been citizens of southern states outside the IDS for a certain period of time to participate in elections conducted by the IDS. While this has received mostly positive reviews it has also be viciously attacked Representative Duke who has fears of carpetbaggers ruining what he referrers to as 'The Dirty South'. Representative Duke, long opponent to the IDS's Cultural Revolution of Awesomeness, has been running has been running an exhausting schedule of debating the bill, protesting the bill outside the Capitol, an running skateboarders of the sidewalks by his house with a shotgun. Currently the Amendment is looking favored to pass in the Legislature.

Today we are expected to receive the long awaited ruling on the future of safe sex. Lat year the IDS passed the Trojan Act, expanding the amount of condoms available to college students in an effort to fight STI's. However earlier in the month in an unprovoked attack, agents of the federal government attacked and seized control 12 Imperial cities and attempted to rob the south of billions worth of property. Facing the arrest of all agents and possible criminal charges against Fuzzybigfoot the matter was instead taken to court where we await the ruling.

We would like to remind everyone that The Porcupine in the most trusted name in news. Our competition, "The People" meanwhile have this to say. "The People...do not support...giving...women...votes." Incredible stuff.

An Interview with Clarence
By Jbrase

Q. Thank you for taking the time do do an interview with the Porcupine. What are your future plans for Atlasia?
A. My pleasure, Jbrase- thanks for the interview. My plans are to continue to be an active Senator... I love the role and find the discussions to be interesting and I always learn something new, even when the votes don't go my way. When I was running for President- much of my time and attention went towards the campaign and I've now put much of that time to my role as a Senator which I enjoy very much. I am of course very passionate about issues involving the armed services, foreign policy, and education. I will continue to fight for what I believe in and make the conservative case as best I can

Q. You recently lost an election for president, making it to the final round and withing 11 votes of Napoleon. What were your personal expectations on election day(s)?
A. Before I made the decision to run- I spoke with many wise folks who gave me insight into the way things work with the elections. I was prepared from the start for an uphill battle and told the folks on my campaign- ZuWo, Yelnoc, etc- that the best we can do is try our darnedest. Well- we tried our darnedest and on election day I reckon we had as good a chance as any one else! After the election was halfway thru, it became clear we were the underdogs but I was happy to see us close the gap in the final hours. I am very proud of the final result and grateful to those who made it possible to come within reach of victory

Q. Currently Tweed is fighting the results in court and if successful will have essentially pulled of a Marxist coup. Would you support a Tweed government if he rose to power in this fashion?
A. I hope the Supreme Court rules in favor of the democratically elected President- my former opponent and friend Napoleon. I'm no expert on the board's constitution, but it seems if the Court rules for Tweed- we have no choice but to follow that decision and work to reform the court so it does not happen again. I've seen two bills- from Ben and from TJ- which have that intention already. However- as perhaps the person on this board who worked the hardest to prevent Napoleon from being elected, I find Tweed's case to be amusing but not convincing in the slightest. I also don't believe the theory some folks have put forward that there is a silent majority rooting for Tweed in this case- I believe folks want the will of the voters to be followed

Q. Everyone knows the Navy is the best branch. but what would you consider the second best?
A. Yes- every one does know that- you're right. I want to say first that I consider every one who has served or currently serves in our armed services to be kin to me and I love and respect them all. I put the Marines with us sailors since they're in our department, so the choice for me is between Army and Air Force. I've much respect for airmen and the critical role they have in preserving our nation's security- even more so today then when I served. However- at risk of angering dead0man I consider Army “second best” due to the experience I have serving with soldiers. I was a Seabee and our motto was “we build, we fight”... and much of my job involved construction (we build) but there were a few times I had to heed the second part of the motto. Fortunately- the first of these times I had soldiers by my side including some of the best trained warriors in the military- Rangers and Special Forces (I once made the mistake of referring to an Army Captain as a Green Beret and he informed me not very kindly that a green beret was something he wore, not something he was). Later on- I served on a Civic Action Team with both Marines and soldiers and the valor I witnessed was a thing of beauty. I owe my life to those men and will sing the praises of the Army every chance I get...

Q. Which was your favorite Darrin on Bewitched?
A. Because my wife once admitted she'd have left me for Dick York, I'm going to go with Sargent...

Q. The porcupine, great newspaper, or the greatest newspaper?
A. If it helps you sleep at night, Jbrase- greatest ;-)

Interview with President Polnut

Thank you for taking the time for an interview with The Porcupine.

Q. As you are in your final days of a presidency, what do you look back on as your greatest achievement and your greatest failure as President?
A. It's odd to look back and say "I should or could have done x or y" but I would say that I will back on this time and say I was disappointed that we couldn't get traction on regional financing reform. But honestly, I'm going to look back on my two terms with a degree of pride. I worked with Senate to put in place social service and health reforms to make them solvent for future generations. We put in place protections for those hit by predatory home lending, got our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, and our unemployment rate is down and we're on the edge of a Budget surplus two years ahead of schedule.

Q. In a move no one saw coming, Boss Tweed has sued your SoFE in hopes of taking the presidency. Who do you predict will be the next President of Atlasia?
A. Tweed is off his meds, Atlasia now longer needs and as the results show, want him. I'm confident the Supreme Court will ensure Governor Napoleon will take his rightful place as president in a week's time.

Q. Mick Dundee vs Steve Erwin
A. I hate both of them... but Dundee in a pinch.

Q. You have recently decided to sue the IDS over a law promoting safe sex. What is your issue with giving condoms to college students?
A. The Federal Government is suing the IDS for an unconstitutional element of the Bill. I'm fully supportive of greater availability of instruments for safe sex, but the IDS legislature made a choice that left us with no choice. I made an offer to the Emperor to amend that legislation to keep that element in place... but I've heard nothing in response.

Q. What are your future plans for Atlasia?
A. I made some declarative statements last year that I was made to regret. Times change and situations do too and what seemed a reasonable position suddenly seemed unrealistic.

I won't say that I have no future role in Atlasia, but what that is will be determined by the circumstances.

Q. How would you like a job as official interviewer for The Porcupine? ;D
A. That's a kind offer, but that's one I'll confidently pass on.

Today we shall release interviews with Tmth and Tweed. Here is the first.

Interview with Tmthforu94
By Jbrase

Q. Thank you for tanking time to answer some questions. Lets start with your thoughts on the current court cases?

A.Starting with the Tweed case. I think it's a very...interesting case. I do give props to Tweed for creating some buzz in the game. Now, I just hope the Supreme Court will view this rationally and rule in the DoFE's favor. This entire nation runs on democracy, and if the court rules in Tweed's favor, democracy as we know it will be gone. That is just unacceptable.

As for the Atlasia vs. IDS case - I've reviewed this case, and it's something I've been waiting on a lawsuit for years - I believe I wrote an article as SoIA on it, but nothing was ever done.

I would tend to favor Atlasia in terms of the actual case - I think it's very difficult to dispute the Dibble as some form of currency. What I do have a problem with, however, is the way the Justice Department handled this case. We're talking about a law that had been in place for years with nothing being done about it. The IDS wasn't hiding it - it was wide out in the open. Then, one day, the Justice Department decides to file a lawsuit and basically takes over the IDS government. The way it was handled was completely wrong, and I believe the Attorney General should issue a formal apology statement to the IDS for his actions.

Q. The Porcupine, a great newspaper or the greatest newspaper?
A. It would have been a toss-up before, but since I'm now on the Porcupine staff, the greatest! :)

Q. You recently started a Mideast-centric party. What are your ultimate goals for the party?
A. My goal for the Mideast Citizens for Progress and Reform (MCPR) was to create a reformist, pro-Mideast party in our region. We're not necessarily going to play party politics, rather, we're going to focus on discussing idea's that we think would better our region, then find ways to implement them. We will also seek to elect candidates who we believe share this same philosophy of putting your region and your country over party politics.

I think we're off to a great start thus far - we're nearing double-digit membership, already hold some key offices in our region, and some reform idea's have already been discussed. I hope this party is successful in pushing through some reforms, as well as creating a sense of regional pride in our region.

Q. Was the Imperial Bloc your main inspiration when creating your new party?
A. Short answer: Yes

Q. Do you have any future plans for national office?
A. That's a great question. You never know what's going to happen in this game - when I left the office of Presidency last year, I never would have believed that a year later, I'd be serving as Vice President.

We'll see what happens - I don't see myself running for at-large, that's just not my style. I'm also very pleased with the job Ben is doing in the Senate, and won't challenge him. So at least in the near future, it would likely be at a regional level. I have given thought to running for Governor again, as there are some new reforms I'd like to see through, but that's a long ways away, so I won't commit to anything. ;)

Q. Who would win in a fight, Super Man or The Hulk
A. Superman, obviously.

I will now give you the opportunity for any shameless plugs you have for our readers. :P
A. Well...I guess my serious advice would be to try and treat this game as an educational experience - it provides you with a lot of life lessons that will be applicable later in life. I'm realizing this after playing the game for over 3 years. ;)

*The Porcupine would like readers to know that the official position of our paper in a Superman vs Hulk fight is that The Hulk would win.*

Interview with Tweed: An inside look at Atlasia's beginnings and possible future
By Jbrase

Question one: Tweed, you are one of the few who have been here since day one. Describe Atlasia in the early days for our readers.
Answer: astrophysicists postulate that in the first Planck Length of time, the physical laws of the universe that have governed since did not apply.  ie, chaos.  as was the case in early Atlasia.  it was a vacuum, ideas here, personalities there, and through the guiding influence of myself and a few others, it found structure.

those were the AOL Instant Messenger days, so much of the politicking went on there.  the first election was held prior to the passage of the constitution.  before the Atlas Fantasy board proper was created, the threads were posted in 'US Presidential Election Results'.  I have posted a set of questions from a fellow named Junkie, which goes into greater detail on many points.

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=153429

Question: For those who are unaware, please explain to our readers what Tweedism is.
Answer: In the beginning of my campaign, I defined it simply as "a fusion of the revolutionary-political with the reactionary-cultural".  by now everyone should know of my sympathy for the great 20th Century actually existing socialist movements and states, and seek to push the state apparatus further towards this end.  in the Court case, I stated that, in an Atlasian context, Tweedism is the "absence of ideology" -- those comments are available publicly.

Question: As by now everyone is well aware, you are continuing your efforts to become president in the Supreme Court. How confident are you that the court will issue an opinion making you President-elect?
Answer: I like my chances better than I did 4-5 days ago.  I am ecstatic that the Court appears to be willing to engage my argument despite its uniqueness of form.  I can't say how confident I am of a victory, but I am very confident that my case has received a fair hearing.

Question: Lets the Supreme Court rules in your favor and you become President. Walk us through what a Tweed Administration would look like.
Answer:  I have a few concrete plans.  first I would like to absolutely re-iterate that all federal elections will occur on schedule.  the People's Tweedist Republic will NOT be a one-party dictatorship.  on a website, what fun would that be?  however, I would issue a directive on inauguration day to the Department of Federal Elections to only take into account first preferences in tabulating and certifying election results, and award victory to the candidate with the highest number of first preferences in a given election, regardless of whether or not this constitutes a majority of votes.  I would leave at least a few offices vacant, and fold the positions of Game Moderator, Secretary of Internal Affairs, and Secretary of External Affairs into one post -- the Ministry of Information, to be headed by ex-president Lief.

Question: Who was the best co-star on Seinfeld?
Answer: Michael Richards.

Question: Finally, what are your thoughts on the current Supreme Court case Atlasia vs The Imperial Dominion of the South?
Answer:  Haven't been following.

The Imperial Herald
Reporting on Imperial matters for The Porcupine

Here's Where Sh*t Stands - Post-Yelnoc Edition

The IDS is still reeling from the retirement of Speaker Yelnoc. Yelnoc, who served as speaker for upwards of 20 months, was an institution in the IDS Legislature and performed his duties admirably. The Imperial Bloc also lost its founder; the Bloc is the foremost advocate of the IDS in all matters, and shall hopefully continue in that role despite the loss of Yelnoc.

With Yelnoc's retirement, a space in the IDS Legislature, as well as the Speakership of that illustrious body, opened. Legislator Jbrase did declare for Speaker and, with no opponents, was confirmed by acclamation. Emperor PiT appointed Secretary of External Affairs SJoyceFla to the open spot in the Legislature, his second appointment in almost as many days (BritishDixie was appointed to the Legislature following the resignation of Vice President-elect Kalwejt).

Yelnoc's departure also opened up vacancies in the leadership of the Imperial Bloc. Vice Chairman Jbrase has assumed the mantle of Acting Chairman, a position he will maintain until the next convention. He has appointed SJoyceFla to fill his position as Vice Chairman.

In recent days, the IDS Legislature has:
  • Prohibited oil drilling within 10.5 nautical miles of the shoreline (by a 4-1 vote)
  • Changed the name of the Special Prosecutor (one who defends the IDS in court) to Defender of the Realm (by a 4-1 vote).
  • Discussed the Southern Unity Act, which would extend voting privileges in IDS elections to Southerners outside of the IDS (bill withdrawn by sponsor)
  • Discussed an act designed to increase activity and participation through better advertising the IDS

The IDS Legislature shall address in the coming days:
  • Three acts introduced by Jbrase altering the Imperial flag, naming system, and other such things
  • An act designed to protect our citizens from Satan by banning license plates with more than two sixes
  • A bill that would lead to the IDS colonizing a portion of Antarctica

Senate Update: The Senate is currently debating the Protection of Legal Regional Functions Act, which would help constrain the ability of the federal government to restrict the legal functions of the regions. This bill would be a great advancement for regional rights, and Southerners should give their support to it.

Court Update: The Supreme Court is currently formulating their ruling in the case of Atlasia v. IDS. A ruling should be expected "soon", according to Chief Justice Ebowed. The Court is rather busy, given the concurrent case of Boss Tweed v. Department of Federal Elections, which is the most likely reason for the delay.

Polling Update: According to a new poll from the Survey Atlasia polling corporation, regional Senator NC Yankee of the Imperial Bloc has a 100% approval rating, which is the same percentage he was elected by. According to concurrent polling from the same corporation, At-Large Senator Clarence has a remarkably high 81% approval rating, and Emperor PiT has an 83% approval rating.

The Federal Government: Are the office holders above the law?

Last month as many of you are well aware the Attorney General of Atlasia, Fuzzybigfoot, sent federal agents into the Imperial Dominion of the South in an attempt to seize control of the various state capitols and an estimated $25 billion worth of IDS property. All of this was done without a warrant, making it nothing less an armed robbery attempt. Only after the IDS ordered for the arrest of all agents involved did the feds back down so the matter would be decided in court.

For the charges of armed robbery, burglary, criminal trespassing, criminal breach of the peace, and conspiracy against rights Senator Wormyguy introduced articles of impeachment against the Attorney General. That was last month and nothing has happened since. Not so much as a thread has been opened on the matter. This paper is not going to call anyone guilty before they had trial, but that is just it, there is no trial.

For whatever reasons not so much as a thread has been started and by now it is nearing the end of the current administration. Clearly something went wrong somewhere for there to be no trial when such serious charges are thrown at a sitting office holder. From what we can gather the Senate realizing that their SoP do not cover impeachment proceedings (!?!) has essential decided "its not our mess" placing the ball in into the hands of Chief Justice Ebowed who has for unknown reasons not started the proceedings.

So what does this mean?

This means that any Federal office holder can break any rules they wish to without fear of impeachment from office. Until the Senate can pass come concrete procedures on how to handle impeachments this paper sees no reason to believe that any outcome in the future will be any different. As it stands the Chief Justice essentially has the power to completely ignore impeachment charges.

The Porcupine would like to urge all readers to place pressure on their Senators to pass clarification on how to handle impeachment proceedings. We must make sure all office holders are held accountable. Unfortunately it is becoming too late to do anything about the current articles of impeachment, but w must make sure this embarrassment never happens again.

I sat down for an exclusive interview with Governor Nix of the Northeast today, discussing the Roscoe Conkling Equity Before the Law Act.

1. The main political battle in the Northeast was the Roscoe Conkling Equity Before The Law act, which was recently passed 3-2 and signed by you. Explain the reasoning behind this law.

I wrote and first introduced this law during the last session of the Northeast Assembly. It has always seemed perverse to me that a person who earns $150,000 in a year must pay the same fine as someone who earns $15,000 or less. This is not equal treatment. $500, for instance, is a hefty charge for the second person, while it amounts to almost nothing for the former. I introduced this law to guarantee that everyone would receive the same kind of treatment before the law.

Also, during that session, we had devoted a great deal of attention to public safety, debating proposals from Representatives Winfield and Simfan such as the Distracted Driving Act, the Bicycle Safety Act, and the Mind-Altering Substance Accountability Act. This legislative theme inspired me; I see this not only as an issue of fair treatment, but also as an issue of public safety. The penalties for engaging in dangerous behavior must be significant enough to deter people of all income levels from doing so.

2. This act was first proposed under Governor Napoleon, but he chose to veto it. What was his reasoning behind it?

Governor Napoleon’s veto surprised me. I had not realized that so many would receive this bill as a radical proposal. I’ve always seen myself as a moderate and a compromiser, and I think that my work on earlier pieces of legislation – the Healthy Skin Act, for instance – shows that I’m committed to crafting consensus. You’ll recall that I received support from a diverse group of Atlasians during my gubernatorial campaign, including a crowd of left-wingers, Whigs, and libertarians. Generally speaking, I’m to slightly to the right of Napoleon.

As far as I could tell, Napoleon vetoed the bill because he understands the purpose of a penalty differently than I do; whereas I see a fine as primarily a deterrent, Napoleon views the payment of a fine as the payment of an almost-literal debt against society.

3. Why the name? Conkling was best known as the corrupt New York senator and party boss in the late 1800's.

I'm glad that you asked! Conkling helped draft the 14th Amendment - I think that has some relevance to what this law aims to accomplish.

4. Pirates or ninjas?

Pirates. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIwzRkjn86w)

5. Finally, the main opponent of the RCEL has been Assemblyman and Former Governor Winfield. With worries that Atlasia is becoming more divided along partisan lines, on what issues do you hope to unite the Northeast on?

For one, I’ve already introduced an improved version of Winfield’s Gambling Benefits Act. Winfield himself agrees that his original proposal was flawed. I would prefer to repeal it, but I know that the Assembly favors retaining the law in some form. My proposal is a compromise - it introduces clearer language, introduces oversight with regard to how funds are disbursed, and reduces the special tax rate for casinos by 25%. I think that voters who follow the process closely understand that this is how I usually operate.

It also appears likely that my proposed budget will soon pass with bi-partisan approval in the Assembly. This will be a huge achievement for the region, and I owe thanks to Representatives Simfan and Jones for their service on the Budget Committee, to GM Shua for his aid in compiling figures and performing calculations, and to Governor Napoleon for implementing the budget process that allowed me to introduce and refine a budget bill so easily.

Finally, I believe that Representative Simfan’s proposal for a new regional capital offers a chance for a spiritual renewal in the Northeast. And while this project will be expensive, moving the capital out of New York City is likely to save the region money over time.

We're Not Beaten

It was with hope mingled with fear that I consulted my computer this morning to read the Court's opinion. I felt an ominous gloom during the "Statement of Facts", when Chief Justice Ebowed interpreted the Trojan Act to be named after Troy, rather than the contraceptive brand. That gloom multiplied till the first sentence proper of the decision, which filled me with disappointment. "It is the opinion of this Court that Section 2 of the Trojan Act is in clear violation of Article I, Section 7, Clause 2"; in other words, the Court has struck down the (clearly Constitutional in the minds of the people of the South, if not the eyes of the Court) Trojan Act.

Some may claim it is now over. Some may say that "The Dibble is done for, there shall never be another." These people are wrong. Although this decision is certainly a step back for the future of free enterprise, it does not stop the Dibble. Sure, you can't get your Dibbles exchanged at your state capitol building now. Sure, the IDS cannot accept it. But you can still get them, you can still buy them, and they're still usable. We may have lost this battle, but the war's not over yet. With the Dibble now established and pre-existing for a year tomorrow, AG Fuzzy cannot win a second case fought on those grounds, and with the government facilities shut down, that plank of the case goes out the window too. We are not beaten, we have not given up, and we shall continue to fight!

Mideast Affairs
Reporting on the Mideast Region at The Porcupine

Assembly Race Shaping Up To Be A Doozy!

In the upcoming July Assembly elections, there are currently 7 declared candidates for the Mideast Assembly! Here is a brief bio on each of the candidates.

Inks.LWC - Inks has served the Mideast region for many years, serving as Governor, Senator, and Assemblyman. He is a member of Mideast Citizens for Progress Reform. He is an incumbment.

Happy Warrior - HappyWarrior is considered to be the most liberal member of the current Assembly. Like Inks, he has served the region for years. He is also a member of the Mideast Citizens for Progress and Reform, and currently serves as Speaker.

RogueBeaver - RogueBeaver was recently appointed by Governor ZuWo to replace A-Bob on the Assembly. He has yet to become active in Assembly affairs, but has announced his decision to seek reelection. He is a member of the Whig Party.

JCL - JCL is also a member of the Whig Party. He won an election to the Assembly in March, only to lose reelection in May. He gave Senator Ben a run for his money in the June 2012 Senatorial election, but ultimately fell short.

20RP12 - 20RP12, also known as Jake Matthews, is fairly new to the region, but not to the game. He has an impressive record of service in the Mideast Region, and currently serves as SoIA. He has long been considered one of Atlasia's most active members. He is a member of MCPR.

Oldiesfreak1854 - Oldiesfreak1854 is a member of the Whig Party. He announced his candidacy early, and has released a platform, which includes that he is pro-life, against gay marriage, and supports lower tax rates. We encourage this candidate to unlock his platform, so individuals may comment and learn more about this candidate.

Idaho BlueDogDem - Idaho Blue Dog Dem is a member of MCPR. He classifies himself as right leaning on economics and left leaning on social issues. He has opened a campaign office, but hasn't started an active campaign.

Tmthforu94 has announced that MCPR will be hosting a debate, and all candidates are expected to participate. This debate will give voters a better chance to learn about their candidates. At present time, the Porcupine predicts that Inks and HappyWarrior will both return to the Assembly, but believes the final 3 seats are entirely up for grabs.

Polling Update: The race for Governor in September 2012 has started very early this year. Governor ZuWo announced approximately one week ago that he would be seeking reelection. Soon after, former President Tmthforu94 announced he was forming an exploratory committee for the office. The first poll, done by A-Bob Research, had Tmthforu94 narrowly defeating the incumbment. Scott Survey's is currently conducting another poll on the race.

Atlasia vs The Imperial Dominion of the South: Feds win Battle, IDS winning the war.

Recently the Supreme Court struck down section 2 of the IDS's Trojan Act in an effort on the Federal Government's part to kill the dibble, gold and silver coins privately produced that no one is forced to accept as payment of debts, but may do so if they chose. In the time since then the IDS Legislature struck back by passing a new law, Imperial Advertisement and Activity Augmentation Act which essentially brings back the struck down section 2 of the Trojan Act but is crafted with the lessons learned of the court case. One crucial argument made in the case was that because there was no prior mention of the dibble before the law, the IDS must have created the dibble. However with the dibble being in existence for over a year now and still privately produced that argument can no longer work against this new law.

Emperor PiT had this to say:

Quote
...It is this senseless act of federal aggression against a peaceful exercise of regional authority that has united the Imperial Dominion of the South in solidarity. Today, the dibble is no longer a competing currency; it is now a symbol of the pride of every citizen in their region; the Dirty South.

The new version passed the Legislature 3-1. The only nay vote against the pro-Southern legislation was the self proclaimed champion of southern people, Representative Duke. Earlier Duke also voted against allowing all southerners to vote.

ZuWo Takes Edge In First ScottSurveys Poll

Mideast Governor ZuWo (Whig-KY) initially appeared to be in trouble in a previous survey, but our latest ScottSurveys poll shows the incumbent leading (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=155601.0) his opponent 10 to 6, garnering 62.5% of the vote to former Vice President Tmthforu94's 37.5%.

However, though Governor ZuWo currently has the edge in this race, that four vote advantage could swing either way down the long road to Election Day.

Quote
RESULTS
ZuWo (Whig-KY)         10 (62.5%)
Tmthforu94 (MCPR-IN)     6 (37.5%)

However, not all Mideastern residents are convinced of these numbers.  Says one constituent,
Whig poll spammers just like the Senate race.

ScottSurveys currently ranks this race as Lean Whig.

Slavery: The crusade to ban slavery continues.

Senator Scott is pushing forward the effort the rid this great nation of an evil. Time after time a majority of Senators are shockingly in favor of allowing conscription, essentially military slavery. Though a flat out ban on conscription seems unlikely, Senator Scott has produced a an amendment to make it extremely difficult to allow.

AN AMENDMENT

To protect Atlasian citizens from compulsory conscription by requiring four-fiths approval of the Senate for its enactment.

Be it enacted by 2/3 of the Senate of the Republic of Atlasia assembled.

SECTION 1. TITLE

This act may be cited as the 'Protection From Military Slavery Amendment.’

SECTION 2. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

Neither shall the Republic of Atlasia nor any of its constituent regions enforce compulsory conscription upon any citizen, without the consent of four-fifths of the Senate.

The Porcupine would like readers to know it is our official position that slavery is immoral and needs to DIAF. For that reason we support this Amendment. We at the Porcupine would like to ask our fellow paper The People to join with us in our stand against slavery.

Mr. Editor,

In relation to our earlier conversation, I feel compelled to present a formal notice of my resignation. While I was not yet certain of my future in the game at the time you hired me, I have since, with a heavy heart, decided to retire from Atlasia, as evidenced by my current registration. My apologies for any inconvenience, but I am perhaps not ideologically suited to the editorial slant of this fine publication regardless. I resign my position.

Regretfully,

Mideast Affairs
Reporting on the Mideast Region at The Porcupine

AssPolling Updates!

We have some polling updates to give you in the region!

Assembly Race:
Assemblyman Inks.LWC (MCPR) - 9
Speaker HappyWarrior (MCPR) - 6
Assemblyman RogueBeaver (Whig) - 6
Idaho Blue Dog Dem (MCPR - 3
Former Assemblyman JCL (Whig) - 5
SoIA 20RP12 (MCPR) - 7
Oldiesfreak1854 (Whig) - 6

Total Voters: 14

In our recent Assembly poll, only 1 candidate has more than 50% of Mideasterners putting them in their Top 5, which suggests a photo-finish race in the region.

At this time, the Porcupine projects based off polling that only Inks is safe in his bid for the Assembly race. The last 4 spots are up for grabs, though we believe 20RP12 and HappyWarrior are favored for 2 of them. The Porcupine will conduct another poll before the Assembly elections later this month.

We also polled the approvals of our government officials:
Governor ZuWo - 77%
Assemblyman HappyWarrior - 77%
Assemblyman RogueBeaver - 73%
Assemblyman Inks - 83%
Judge Franzl - 90%

All officials have high approvals - no surprise here.

Northeast Government Approval Ratings

A recent ScottSurveys (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=155705.0) poll found that Northeast residents are generally happy with their governing officials, but Rep. Mondale84 (Lib-NJ) and CJO Belgiansocialist (Ind. Labor-NY) struggle with significant voter discontent.

The results of the survey are as follows:
Quote
Lieutenant Governor/Speaker Simfan34 (Whig)
Approve: 70% (7 votes)
Disapprove: 30% (3 votes)

CJO Belgiansocialist (Ind. Labor)
Approve: 30% (3 votes)
Disapprove: 60% (6 votes)
Neutral: 10% (1 vote)

Rep. Alfred F. Jones (Labor)
Approve: 80% (8 votes)
Disapprove: 20% (2 votes)

Rep. PyroThefox (Labor)
Approve: 70% (7 votes)
Disapprove: 30% (3 votes)

Rep. Winfield (Ind.)
Approve: 70% (7 votes)
Disapprove: 30% (3 votes)

Rep. Mondale84 (Liberal)
Approve: 30% (3 votes)
Disapprove: 70% (7 votes)

TOTAL VOTERS: 10

It appears that Rep. Mondale84 could be in some serious trouble heading into next month's midterm election, when leftist and rightist Northeasterners battle for control of the Assembly.

On top of that, Governor Nix might want to consider tapping someone else for CJO when Mr. Belgiansocialist's tenure is up.  Belgiansocialist is famously known for his unsuccessful Senate campaign and advocacy for former presidential candidate Boss Tweed in the recent Supreme Court case.  Some suspect that these factors may have contributed to his low numbers this week.

Interview with JCL

Q: You recently lost a Senate race against Ben by a decent margin in what was supposed to a very close race. Some polls even showed you ahead. What do you feel went wrong?

A:It came down a 3 or 4 vote swing. I ran a clean and honest campaign that I can be proud of even if it came up just a bit short. It wasn't easy having my mentor in Atlasian politics enthusiastically supporting my opponent but he made that decision prior to my announcement. The others who I thought were in my column that sided with Senator Ben did so out of friendship. So it came down to several things rather than just onething.

Q: What are you currently working on in the Mideast Government?

A: Campaigning to return to the assembly. Advocating for conservative reforms in fiscal matters. Also petitioning to see a law that would make human traffickers fear plying their Nefarious trade in the region.

Q:What role do you feel the Federal Government should have in people's lives? Not just economic, but social issues as well.

A: The federal government should be constrained to keep within the enumerated powers it has. Much social policy contraverseries we have are not specifically mentioned in the Constuition. As such they should be left to the regions. Economically the government is following a Kenyesian model which is not beneficial for economic liberty and prosperity. I follow more of what is know as the Austrian school of economics. It advocates for commodity based currency and liberality in contract rights. Though government can play a role as an advocate for specifically enumerated consumer protections. As for the current nationalized healthcare system, I see it as a monstrosity that has to be placed on the ash heap of failed government experiments.

Q: Pepsi or Coca-Cola?

A: Depends on my mood.

Q: Zuwo or Tmth for Governor?

A: I'm playing this race "close to my chest" meaning I'm waiting till after the two debate.

Early Primary Polls &
Little Support For Military Action Against Iran

Both parties are shaping up to have a tremendously competitive primary season in the coming months, should some of the potential contenders throw their hats into the ring.

On the Labor Party's side (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=156397.0), former Northeast Governor Snowstalker narrowly takes the title of frontrunner by a modest two vote lead.  Behind him are former At-Large Senator Nathan, Midwest Senator Redalgo, one vote for a candidate not on the poll, and two participants who have expressed support for President Napoleon this October.

Snowstalker: 36.4% (4 votes)
Nathan: 18.2% (2 votes)
Alfred F. Jones: 0% (0 votes)
PyroTheFox 0 (0 votes)
Redalgo: 18.2% (2 votes)
Seatown: 0% (0 votes)
hawkeye59: 0% (0 votes)
Other: 9.1% (1 vote)
President Napoleon: 18.2% (2 votes)
Total Voters: 11

On the other side of the aisle, the Whig Party primary (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=156396.0) shows no clear frontrunner.  Though former At-Large Senator Pingvin99 declared his candidacy for president last Monday, he runs behind a trio of other names: Mideast Governor ZuWo, Northeast Assembly Speaker and Lieutenant Governor Simfan34, and At-Large Senator Clarence.  ZuWo has denied any possible run in the near future.

Pingvin: 11.8% (2 votes)
ZuWo 23.5% (4 votes)
Simfan34: 23.5% (4 votes)
Clarence: 23.5% (4 votes)

TJ in Cleve 5.9% (1 vote)
JohanusCalvinusLibertas 11.8% (2 votes)
Other: 0% (0 votes)
Total Voters: 17

And the last party to be surveyed, the Imperial Bloc (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=156403.0), could nominate just about anyone, if they decide to run a candidate this October.  IDS Representative Sjoycefla narrowly emerges as the early frontrunner with three votes.

Jbrase: 22.2% (2 votes)
North Carolina Yankee: 11.1% (1 vote)
PiT (The Physicist): 22.2% (2 votes)
Sjoycefla: 33.3% (3 votes)
AHDuke99 (Independent): 11.1% (1 vote)
Other: 0% (0 votes)
Undecided: 0% (0 votes)
Total Voters: 9

We also conducted a poll over the same period to find out how much support Senator Clarence's (W-FL) recent proposal to authorize military action against Iran (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=150709.msg3361318#msg3361318) has gotten, and found that Atlasians oppose such a move by more than a two-to-one margin. (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=156399.0)  The Whigs were the only party to show majority support.

Question: Do you support Senator Clarence's plan to authorize military action against Iran?

Liberals
Yes: 13.5% (1 vote)
No: 87.5% (7 votes)

Labors
Yes: 0% (0 votes)
No: 100% (5 votes)

Whigs
Yes: 86% (6 votes)
No: 14% (1 vote)

Imperial Bloc
Yes: 0% (0 votes)
No: 100% (5 votes)

Mideast Citizens For Progress And Reform
Yes: 50% (2 votes)
No: 50% (2 votes)

Independent/Other
Yes: 33.33% (1 vote)
No: 66.66% (2 votes)

Total
Yes: 31% (10 votes)
No: 69% (22 votes)
Total Voters: 32

Quote

No Major Power Shift In Northeast Assembly Expected

It appears as though the leftists will likely retain their majority (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=156695.msg3368603#msg3368603) in the Northeast Assembly this month.  Rep. Alfred F. Jones (LAB-NY) is in the best position to keep his seat, as well as former Speaker Simfan34.  Although, Simfan recently stepped down from the Speakership, and it is unclear if he will run for reelection or not.

The poll also finds Rep. PyroTheFox (LAB-MA) dead last on the contender list, but this is likely attributed to his recent resignation, (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=102877.msg3369603#msg3369603) and he is not expected to run for reelection.  However, the Labors are expected to retain that seat, as contender bore (LAB-RI) wins seven of the ten votes cast.

This leaves Rep. Mondale84 (LIB-NJ), who was initially expected to have an uphill battle after a terribly poor showing in his latest approval rating, now appearing to be in a much more competitive spot.  Still, his chances of victory are still uncertain, and the Whig Party is currently running one candidate in the election, as well.  Rep. Winfield (I-RI) has not declared his intention to run for reelection at this time.

Judging only by the results of the poll, ScottSurveys projects that Jones, Simfan, bore, Winfield, and Mondale will have the best chances of victory later this month.

Quote
RESULTS

Question: If the elections for Northeast Assembly were held today, which candidates would receive your first five preferences?

Simfan34 (Whig): 18.8% (9 votes)
Alfred F. Jones (Labor): 18.8% (9 votes)
PyroTheFox (Labor): 8.3% (4 votes)
Winfield (Independent):14.6% (7 votes)
Mondale84 (Liberal): 12.5% (6 votes)
Goldwater (Whig): 10.4% (5 votes)
bore (Labor): 14.6% (7 votes)
Write-in: 2.1% (1 vote)

Total Voters: 10

UPDATE: Speaker Winfield has announced that he will not run for reelection.

Kalwejt Leads In Liberal Pre-Primary Poll

Vice President Kalwejt currently leads in the latest ScottSurveys Primary Poll. (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=157548.0)

Quote
Question: Of the following names, which person would you most likely support for the February 2013 Liberal Party primary?

Northeast Governor Averroes Nix 8.3% (1 vote)
Pacific Governor NVTownsend 16.7% (2 votes)
Vice President Kalwejt 33.3% (4 votes)
Northeast Senator Scott    16.7% (2 votes)
Northeast Rep. Mondale84 8.3% (1 vote)
Former Vice President Bacon King 16.7% (2 votes)
Pacific Senator sbane 0% (0 votes)
Cincinnatus (Independent) 0% (0 votes)
Other 0% (0 votes)

Currently, it is expected that President Napoleon will seek reelection.  Should he not and the Liberal Party's primary be held early, Kalwejt appears to be on a good path to victory if he chooses to run.

Presidential Race: Napoleon Dominates In New Poll

A new poll (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=157708.0) shows President Napoleon leading two of his likely challengers for the October presidential race by a substantial margin.

Quote
Question: If the election for President were held today, which candidate would receive your first preference?

Napoleon (Liberal): 58.3% (14 votes)
Snowstalker (Labor): 20.8% (5 votes)
Pingvin99 (Whig): 20.8% (5 votes)

Because many of Snowstalker's second preference votes will likely be added to Napoleon's vote total in the runoff count, Napoleon is in an especially dominating position should he decide to run for reelection.

So as many of you may be seeing in the New Register Thread, there have been some disturbing trends of migration to the IDS recently. Instead of the inflow of reliable, contributing, well-meaning citizens, we've been having immigration of a far more sinister sort. Members of the Labor Party have concocted a nefarious plot to infiltrate our glorious region, which they are calling "Operation Cottonfield", which shall lead to nothing less that the complete takeover of the governmental functions of the IDS and institution of a socialist regime in Memphis. It began with current IDS Legislator Adam Griffin, but was truly instituted by Northeast Speaker and Lieutenant Governor Alfred F. Jones, who has used his mechanisms to increase the size of the Labor Party in the IDS by 200%, with the installation of former Senator Seatown and Associate Justice Opebo, both known socialists, in the IDS. This potential takeover could mean that the Government of the IDS could fall from its current state of fiscal responsibility into the dark slums of crushing debt.

()
Labor Party recruitment poster for the invasion of the IDS

This invasion must be resisted by all means necessary. We cannot allow the Labor Party to seize control of the Imperial Dominion of the South. Good Imperial citizens should take what actions they can to prevent the red menace from infiltrating their communities. We can and will prevent our region from falling to socialist control; while the good people of the Mideast appear to be alright, the Midwest has fallen, the Northeast is severely threatened, and the Pacific (while appearing to possibly be on the verge of a counterrevolution) is still in Labor's hands. They cannot extent their grasp to a majority of the regions; if they do, with 4 regional Senators as well as however many at-large seats they can get, they could very well pass any Constitutional amendment they wanted. The Internationale would be the anthem of our nation, and the red flag that of our nation. This is not the Atlasia we want. Resist this invasion! Counterattack into the Pacific! Stop the red menace!

According to sources, the Labor conspiracy to conquer the IDS and install their own regime was not instituted by Alfred F. Jones. Speculation suggests it was masterminded by a key Labor figure, who utilized IDS Legislator Adam Griffin as an inside man in the region to help the takeover go smoothly.

Question: If the election for Mideast Governor were held today, which candidate would receive your first preference?

ZuWo (Whig): 44% (8 votes)
Tmthforu94 (MCPR): 44% (8 votes)

Interview with Senator Ben (MCPR-ME)

SJoyceFla, IDS Correspondent for The Porcupine (working outside his jurisdiction), sat down with Senator Ben today in an exclusive interview to ask him about his work in the Senate, his time as SoEA, his opinion on current going-ons in Atlasian politics, his re-election, and much more...

The Porcupine: Could you outline your specific position on Clarence's Iran resolution? Why do you believe what you do?

Ben: I fully support Clarence's resolution.  I believe the Atlasian Government should never rule out military force, especially when it comes to a threat like Iran.

The Porcupine: What qualifications for office do you have that would make you a better choice than 20RP12?

Ben: For one thing, experience.  I've built a record in the Senate that I am extremely proud of, including the creation of the Committee on National Security.  I've also been a leader in the debates on many major pieces of legislation, as well as a near perfect record of activity.

The Porcupine: You wear a red avatar yet represent the Mideast, a relatively conservative region. How do you represent your beliefs as well as those of your constituents?

Ben: For one, I myself am a moderate.  I'm not a crazy left winger like Redalgo.  When I disagree with the citizens of my region, it's respected because my constituents know I truly believe in my votes, and never vote for political gain.  And remember, my predecessor was just as, if not more, liberal than I am.  The Mideast cares about a candidate's ability and willingness to work more than ideology.

The Porcupine: You've described the current President as a "petty, antagonistic jerk with a penchant for personal vendettas" and "more personally vindictive than Liberas ever was", and that "his personality is one of the worst on the forum". How do you reconcile this with your apparent support of his presidency?

Ben: Yikes.  Honestly, having worked with Napoleon closely the last few months, I've seen a different side of him.  He's become much easier to work with than he ever was before.  And he has been an excellent President, working well with the Senate and being far more willing to compromise than I thought he'd be.  I'm happy to endorse him for reelection.

The Porcupine: Do you support former Secretary Kalwejt's attempts to negotiate with Iran?

Ben: I do, although I am pessimistic about the chances of success.

The Porcupine: You were SoEA for many years. What is your opinion of your successors in the office?

Ben: Well, it's been a small sample size, but I approve so far.  Both of my successors have worked hard, both in terms of generating stories and working with the Senate.  And I expect Cathcon to be just as successful.

The Porcupine: How do you respond to charges that you are a 'moderate hero' (including being mentioned in the Wiki article on said term)?

Ben: I didn't know I was mentioned in the wiki; that's interesting.  The charge had merit once, but I feel it no longer does.

The Porcupine: *Softball question alert* Which job do you prefer, SoEA or Senator, and why?

Ben: As much as I loved being SoEA, there's more power being a Senator.  As SoEA I could only do so much; I depended on the Senate to act.  As a Senator I can influence national policy to a much greater degree.  So, it's the Senator position, by a close margin.

The Porcupine: What do you think your chances are in the October election? Do you feel threatened by 20RP12's candidacy?

Ben: I'm optimistic. I feel like I've done a good job representing the Mideast, and have lived up to expectations. Jake, however, is a strong opponent, and I intend to vigorously campaign for the job.

The Porcupine: What do you think have been the major accomplishments of your term? What legislation would you like to introduce if you're re-elected?

Ben: Hard to say.  Obviously the creation of the NSC is a point of personal pride.  Much like the Senators in the US I admire, I don't care so much about legislation bearing my name; rather, I care about passing the important bills.  If I'm reelected I want to work with the incoming President, first and foremost.  Education is an issue near and dear to my heart, so I'll look into ways to pursue that issue as well.

The Porcupine: Would you consider running for President again? I recall the Ben/SJoyce ticket got a not-inconsequential amount of attention in June.

Ben: I'd consider it, certainly.  But I like my current job, and the incumbent President is doing a fine job as is.

The Porcupine: How would you combat unemployment, which according to the GM's numbers isn't dropping (at least in specific regions)?

Ben: I firmly believe that we need to fix our infrastructure.  Thus, fixing our infrastructure will enable us to also create jobs.  In addition, I am a supporter of harsher penalties for outsourcers, and incentives to keep jobs here.  At a national or regional levels, these are solid solutions.

The Porcupine: What do you view as possible on a federal level to improve education?

Ben: I think we should develop a new set of standards, as well as incentivize teachers to stay on the job. This is a significant issue, and I hope to work with the GM and the Administration on finding solutions.

Thanks for the interview!

Let us Work to Better Atlasia.

G.K. Chesterton once wrote:

“Let us suppose we are confronted with a desperate thing – say Pimlico. If we think what is really best for Pimlico we shall find the thread of thought leads to the throne of the mystic and the arbitrary. It is not enough for a man to disapprove of Pimlico; in that case he will merely cut his throat or move to Chelsea. Nor, certainly, is it enough for a man to approve of Pimlico; for then it will remain Pimlico, which would be awful. The only way out of it seems to be for somebody to love Pimlico; to love it with a transcendental tie and without any earthly reason. If there arose a man who loved Pimlico, then Pimlico would rise into ivory towers and golden pinnacles… If men loved Pimlico as mothers love children, arbitrarily, because it is theirs, Pimlico in a year or two might be fairer than Florence. Some readers will say that this is mere fantasy. I answer that this is the actual history of mankind. This, as a fact, is how cities did grow great. Go back to the darkest roots of civilization and you will find them knotted round some sacred stone or encircling some sacred well. People first paid honour to a spot and afterwards gained glory for it. Men did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.”

Recently some are talking about doing a full reboot of Atlasia. This is not the first time this idea has come up. Some even talk of Atlasia being dead or dying. Is Atlasia dead or is it our love for her that has died, leaving us with the inevitable consequences. Perhaps we do not need to scrap everything and start over, perhaps the problems are simply symptoms of our own attitudes and personal feuds. A reboot may clear the needing to be updated statutes on the wiki, but will do nothing to solve the problem of why it falls behind to begin with. I propose we restore the Atlasia we have, not simply give up and reboot it.

Can we please not over legislate?

Unless repealing or fixing a terrible laws that already exists, The Porcupine offers the following detailed analysis of any other legislation. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29E6GbYdB1c)

When it is nearly impossible to go a day for anyone alive to not break some obscure law without realizing it, can we begin to have the conversation that's long overdue? Perhaps a goal for the Senate is to have a session where they end with fewer statutes than when they started. But then again an addict can only be cured when they make the internal decision that they want the change. So then it is likely this may only be a dream until that majestic day comes when a majority of the Senate decides to advance the cause of liberty.

If Bore's Second Repeal of Useless Laws Act passes, this will almost certainly happen in the current session.

Done

I would also point out that the number of bills passed only exceeds the number of bills failed by 2. That is a rather close distribution as 75% of bills considered typically pass the Seante.

Interview with Oakvale

Q1: It's been a few years since your last interview with The Porcupine. Do you think Atlasia is better or worse than it was in 2010?

Well, first of all thanks for the interview Dallas. Always a pleasure to talk with you and The Porcupine.

This might surprise some people, but I think Atlasia is ultimately in a better place in 2014 than it was in 2010. I entered the game during the second afleitch administration, in comparison to which the complaints of stagnant activity today look trifling. "Game reform" was the order of the day, and I saw the Purple State/Marokai landslide happen largely on the back of complaints about a dysfunctional constitution and an anxiety that the game was dying - this fear's nothing new. And yet Atlasia has survived and thrived in the years since. There's always cycles of activity and relative inactivity, but I think the game's in a solid position at the moment and I'm optimistic about the future.

Despite the criticisms from some, I really think the dual dissolution of the RPP and JCP helped. As you remember, we'd ended up in a situation where a monolithic JCP could count on winning every election by one or two votes. Upsets were almost unheard of. This was at risk of killing the game entirely, and while we've to some extent reverted back to two major right and left parties, the existence of smaller parties like the Democratic Republicans and The People's Party mean that there's significantly more nuance than there was at the low point pre-dissolution.

What we need to be wary of is a situation where Labor and the Federalists become little more than a rehash of the old JCP/RPP divide. The ideological diversity within both parties and the offset provided by the small parties is a good bulwark against falling back into old habits. The future is bright.

Q2: You've been a wearer of many hats during your time in Atlasia. What would you say your favorite position was?

That's a tricky one. I really enjoyed being Governor of the Pacific, where I think I did a lot of good work and helped to prod the region out of its traditional stagnation to some degree - a lot like Governor DemPGH is succesfully doing now.

Being a Senator varied, largely due to real-life commitments interfering - unlike being a Governor, the Senate requires a bigger and more speicfic time commitment since you need to show up to votes at certain, specific times, and make sure to contribute to the debate so you're not just a paper Senator. This means in practice that real life can interfere quite easily and hurt your activity levels - although I should point out that my favourite time as a Senator was certainly in the glory days of the old TPP Senate, which, if I do say so myself, was one of the most productive, exciting and stimulating Senates in recent memory. I feel bad about having to resign after the dissolution of the old Party, but, as mentioned, real life can wreak havoc on a Senator's ability to do his job.

Overall, though, I'd have to say my favourite position is the one I have now - Supreme Court justice. I have job security (no elections! :P), get to work with thoughtful and intelligent people like bgwah and Torie, and have the opportunity, even if it's all too rare, to really dig into the most interesting part of Atlasia for me - scrutinising the constitutionality of problematic laws.

It's perhaps telling that one job I've always regretted not having in Atlasia is Attorney General, but I'm thrilled that I got the unlikely opportunity to return to the Court, and I'm really happy in my current role. The Supreme Court's an absolutely vital part of Atlasia and the chance to contribute to it is fantastic.

Q3: Currently your job is "emergency manager." What does that entail, and how does it relate to the Pacific's regional government?

Well, given my long connection with the Pacific over my career (I think I've held pretty much every position possible in the region - Governor, Lt. Gov, Councillor, Council Speaker, and, sort of (;)) regional judge), President Duke appointed me to be the administration's eyes on the ground in the region and to oversee the distribution of stimulus money as we try to dig the Pacific out of its disastrous economic situation.

After an initial rocky start where the Justice granted my office sweeping temporary powers in order to stabilise the situation as drastically and quickly as possible, and the transition from an "emergency" into a more hopeful situation, I've stepped back into a far more hands-off role - I'm basically around to provide advice to the Governor and Council when and if they need it, make sure that the stimulus money isn't being spent frivolously, and, ultimately, to stay as hands-off as possible and allow the Pacific to return to normal government. I think the best way I can help with the recovery of the region is by keeping up steady communication with the Governor and local government and to let them plot their own course as much as possible.

It's been working out quite well so far - I really can't praise DemPGH and the Council enough. They've been terrific partners in this effort.

I don't know how long I will stay in this role, although I am more than willing to serve for as long as the President wants me to. My inclination is that I will likely step down at the end of the Duke adminstration, and presumably the conclusion of the Project, and trust that the DemPGH/Duke/Oakvale (if you'll pardon the slight ego) reforms we've bene working on have been enough to steer the region into prosperity and activity once more.

I'm really hopeful.

Post by: #CriminalizeSobriety on May 14, 2014, 07:18:51 PM
Q4: Are you satisfied with the Pacific's rate of progress?

Yes, I am, although I suppose we'll have to see what our new GM's latest report says. We've seen a huge drop in unemployment, a return of business confidence, a boost in our credit rating, and, less tangibly but maybe more significantly, a renewed atmosphere of optimism and confidence in an often troubled region.

Again, a huge part of the credit  needs to go to the Governor and Council, who have been wonderful - they understand the gravity of the situation and have been proactive and engaged in dealing with it. I firmly believe that thanks to our work - both the administration's Save The Pacific Project and our partners in the regional government - the Pacific is en route to becoming the success story of Atlasia and President Duke's most proud and lasting legacy.

The turnaround will also, if I may say so, serve DemPGH well in his quest for the Presidency - if he can do for Atlasia what he did for the Pacific, and I think he very possibly can, he'll be a remarkable President.

In spite of the signficant progress, we're continuing to work as hard as we can to get our region back on track. There's nothing more important to the Governor, myself, the SoIA or the President than guiding the Pacific back to health. We're getting there, but we're not complacent - we won't be content until the Pacific is not just recovering, but recovered and is a vibrant, thriving region again.

Q5: What has been your favorite/most interesting court case that you've ruled on, in either of your terms?

Hmmm. Of course, I wish I had more court cases to talk about. Typically, I had the luck to get appointed just as an extremely active Attorney General was leaving office.

This might seem like a strange choice since the effect wasn't particularly dramatic, but I enjoyed working on and discussing with my fellow Justices Inkks.LWC v. Registrar General homelycooking, which considered the legality of the Registrar General using discretion in deciding whether to remove voters from the rolls based on the interpretation of a murkily-worded part of the Constitution. Our unanimous decision ruled that the Registrar General acted unconstitutionally in removing some voters from the rolls and ordered their reinstatement.

I liked that case because it displayed one of the most common problems in Atlasian legal scholarship - poorly-crafted attempts at legal language that serve only to confuse the situation. Our job was to attempt to wrangle an understanding of the implications out of the unclear language and issue a judgement on an important issue. It also served as an interesting example of just how important reading clauses in context is, at least in my interpretation of the Constitution.

There are some cases that I really wish I'd been on the Court for - particularly the issue of the South establishing an indpendent currency by attempting to jump through various legal loopholes. It would have been a lot of fun to rule on that case, but knowing the South they may try something similar soon, so hey. ;)

I do hope we get to look at more cases in the near future - I notice that the Midwest is about to penalise hate speech, which might provoke some enterprising lawyer to mount a challenge - that, for example, would be a very interesting case if it happened. But there's lots of potential for interesting constitutional debates. We just need people to take advantage of them.

Q6: Do you have any plans for elective office in the future, or are you content to sit on the court for the time being?

I can answer "no" to this in the most strict sense - I have absolutely no plans, and am content to sit on the Court for the foreseeable future.

That said, I don't plan to become opebo, lingering on the Court until I'm inevitably banned. I mentioned earlier that I greatly enjoyed being the Governor of the Pacific, and that's a job I could possibly see myself returning to at some point. I think I'm older, wiser and more capable now, and armed with the experience of serving in many positions over the years as well as helping with this recovery process, I think I'd be a much more capable executive than I was all those years ago.

On which note - I've run for President twice (seriously, at least), and at least one of those times I could honestly say that I still wanted to be President at the end of the campaign (my independent run with my good friend Cinci in 2012). Would I still like to be President some day? Maybe. I won't rule it out definitively - I do think I would have made a good President, but there'd have to be a situation where I don't see any candidates up to the task, where work on the Supreme Court is scant, and where Atlasia is at a point where I think the skills and experience I've gained in guiding economic and activity-based recovery can help the nation as a whole. That's not a point I've reached - we have two very strong candidates this time around, DemPGH and SirNick, and I'm more than content to stay on the Court for the time being.

If the time ever comes for me to step back into elected office in any serious capacity (obviously discounting possibly serving as a temporary Councilor in the Pacific if necessary or helping my friend Snowstalker gain ballot access) it would be as a candidate for Governor or for the Presidency, nothing else.

But I don't expect that time to come any time soon. I love my job and intend on staying there.

Thanks again, Dallas. It was great talking to you. :)

Interview with North Carolina Yankee

Q1: You allude that the demo has returned. Will anybody be spared?

First off I would like to thank you inviting me to be interviewed by your legendary, even if old-fashioned, media enterprise. ;)

I presume you mean demon. I am sure we have nothing to worry about, I think I even hear "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys playing in the background. ;) KILL YOU ALL!!!

Q2: You've been the PPT for ages. What is it that makes you take up such an arduous (and at times thankless) job?

I feel that as long as I am able to do it, I should offer my services for it is as you say and the Senate functions far better with a functional administration. Now that the VP is actively administering on a regular basis, and I would feel satisfied leaving now. We have crushed the queue backlog to below 20 (almost a 2/3rds reduction from the high) and we have made numerous improvements over the past year.

Q3: Are there any reforms to the OSPR that you'd like to see?

I would like to see more consolidation and there are segments that have yet to be done in this regard. Working with Senators in numerous parties we have managed to cut down on a lot of the clutter. The amendment vote section was three paragraphs, it is now one. We reduced the final Vote section in length by nearly 30% as well.

We have also made great strides in improving the functionality of the Senate in other ways as well. The Amendment vote times was cut from five days to three and final votes from seven to five days. Senator Spiral led the effort with his bill to increase the number of slots and that combined with Senator shua's recent Queue Sanity Amendment have together with the activity of Cincy as well as myself as PPT enabled us to get within the current month on all bills for the first time in probably a year or two.

Q4: How would you critique the current Senate session, and do you long for earlier days? Which session was your favorite, since having been elected to the body?

I would like to see more engagement, and more interest in the big projects. We have a disaster of a healthcare plan in place that was exposed litterally as a result of my decision to takeover sponsorship of Riley's bill, originally sponsored by Tmth. Now we are trying to craft a market based proposal but we basically have just me and Shua forming a text from scratch to restructure the way our healthcare system operate and it is taking too long.

What I would like to see is Senators opining at the start on most or all bills so that we know where people stand and then have them engaged constructively on at least five to seven bills that are within their wheelhouse so to speak.

I long to go back a good ten years and start over, but of course that isn't possible.

My favorite session has to be the September-October 2010 session once I regained the position of PPT back from BK. At the very least I had the most fun for that was the first time I used "creative PMing" to get people's attention. It included Halloween and it was notlong after the most recent episode of the "Demon's blind rage" so there was a lot of inspiration.

Q5: You were previously RPP chair, and have once more assumed the role of Chairman of the premier center-right party (the Federalists, of course.) How does it compare to your leadership of the RPP, and how do the two parties as a whole compare?

The RPP was a dying party in a complete downward spiral when I came to lead it and we lost even more ground before we finally turned it around and began to build upward again. We were helped by the fact that our most controversial members were gone save for me when I was out of my head and thus we became an attractive center right alternative by showcasing some of our best talent with Duke as At-Large Senator, Smid as a Vice President in early 2010, and several key players in the Mideast like Inks and others. We also managed to bring in a lot of newer members over the next two years, as well as to attract members of other parties who had either previously defected or were new to the organization and all of whom formed a critical part of our party's success.

The Federalist Party is different. It has suffered setbacks but it is no where near the apparent moribound condition of the RPP when I came to lead it. That said it does have it own unique challanges and just like the RPP, will depend largely upon the energy of relatively newer faces as most of the big players from last year have left the Party or have pulled back from the game to a large extent. To some extent that is normal as people generally go through cycles in terms of their involvement in this place, whilst for some there were a lot of mistakes and miscommunications that caused a lot of unnecessary strife during the Winter season. One thing I have said we needed is to listen more to each other and to engage more with on another so as to avoid that going forward. Progress has been made, but there is still a ways to go.

Q6: Do you think Atlasia was better before, or after dissolution?
Dissolution was by far the worst event that has ever befallen this game and those who assisted in bringing it upon us shall be struck down in an instant of violent rage.

Just kidding :) Or am I? >:D

I think the destruction of the RPP was premature. We had won the Presidency the previous February, had a bad June for a variety of reasons and bounced back to within two votes of winning in October. This created a sense of malaise that nothing ever changes, and that combined with a desire on the other side "to go out on top" produced dissolution. The RPP had also bounced back in the Senate by the going from a six seat JCP majority in September to a six seat RPP majority by January 2012.

I think it is classic example of people trying to legislate a change in the game's direction activity wise. "Stirring things up" only lasts a short time though and we got maybe 16, 17 months and we were moving right back to a duopoly. The best changes, the ones with the biggest and most long lasting effects come from the bottom up. The only difference between this game and Survivor is that there is no million dollars waiting at the end and it builds up from the bottom as opposed to a destructive race to the bottom to see who is left standing.

Q7: Is there a Federalist going to run for President?
"You don't really know how its going to turnout" - Mitt Romney

There might still be, but it depends on whether or not they want to run now or wait. Like I said it will be up to largely new members I think to take the Party forward, my position is merely to support and assist them. Kind of like I put forward the best talent to change people's opinions about the RPP back in late 2009. There was a time when I considered running in June but that is completely off the table now, I think there are people better suited to it, who have patience to put together a cabinet and stuff more so then I do.

Q8: If not, who are you going to support?"
I like all the big candidates right now actually. I worked with DemPGH to run the Senate and thought he was given kind of a bad deal back in October. I have not had a chance to witness much of Windjammer's work but most of what I have heard and seen is positive. Sirnick/Dallasfan is a solid combination as is the combination of Winfield/Andrew, and speaking of Andrew I am glad to see he has returned after his long absence. Another success for the reign of Duke/Cincy. ;) I think the campaign has a long way to go and there is plenty of time for someone else to get in, run a good champaign and then win if they decide to.

Q9: Seeing as you were elected to Senate in 1918, are you going to run again yourself"?
You see someone had to stop Woodrow Wilson's big gov't, pro-war and Segregationist agenda. :P

Sometimes experience does have its advantages. One of the most controversial debates I plunged into was the initial debate over Fritzcare, and I did everything I could to stop it, water it down, or at the very least make it somewhat less of a disaster once it became clear passage was likely. MasterJedi and I were the only ones in the Senate to vote against it. At the time we had another trainwreck in the form of a constitutional convention that started with divisions over its purpose and it was no surprise when it came off the tracks that summer. Also over the ensuing time, I have managed to push for reforms and still preserve and protect Region's, Regional Senate seats and carve out as much of a piece of the pie for Region's as possible to ensure the Federal Govt' didn't hog all the bandwidth. There are times when I have supported bills that in real life I would not have supported like the Regional Exemption Act by Mr. X, because I figured some drug debates in the regional legislatures would be fun. Generally I favor liberalization and ending the war on drugs and would have supported such with regards to any IDS legislation on the matter should the Exemption have passed.

It gets harder with each time I think becuase the expectations are rightfully higher as to what else can be offered in exchange one more time. Many times it is a combination of unfinished business and/or a sense of obligation that keeps me going for one more. I would really like to get a market based healthcare system enacted, finish the Mental Healthcare Reform project, and do something permenent on the minimum wage maybe even along the lines of what Nix suggested in the his interview. We have other tools that are far more effective and less damaging, we should move towards them now. Here again my experience comes in handy because I know people love to keep changing it all the time and typically in a direction that fails to consider employment or local economics, and if that history isn't a good advocacy for a change in policy, I don't know what is. On the other hand I experienced a traumatic loss just two months ago and have to consider the real life situation as well in making my decision. I plan to take as much time as possible and will probably decided around the end of this month. Two and half weeks is plenty for time for an active campaign if I decide to go for it.

Interview with Devin

Q1: How long have you been involved in Atlasia for?

I first declared my run for council on new years eve 2013. It was the legendary Governor Zuwo, and Senator TmthForu94 that got me involved. Flo was also another close friend who got me up and running.

Q2: The Pacific has somewhat of a unique situation, from what I understand. Could you elaborate on the nature of it?

The Pacific has long been dominated by one party government. This always leads to a lack of new ideas, and general interest. Combine that with poor management, and laws that hinder instead of help the economy, and you get our current situation.
But now we have a new new Council, and a very successful Governor.
Q3: How would you rate the progress of the Pacific?

I would say a 7.5/10. while we have made progress, double digit unemployment is not something to be proud of. But I am proud to say the Council is working hard to turn the Region around.

Q4: Do you have any aspirations for higher office?

Yes I do, I have been waiting for this interview to make an announcement. I am officially running for Governor of the Pacific!

Q5: How would you appraise the presidential campaign?

I must say we have a great race, and I agree on atleast some issues with all of the candidates. Despite that my official endorsement goes to Dem PGH. He has the experience, and bipartisan credentials this nation needs.

The Porcupine Interview - Senator LumineVonReuental

Senator LumineVonReuental started his career in Atlasia as a Mideast Assemblyman. He had won in a massive upset due to a strong campaign and a pledge not to do PMing, and made strides to put into place speed limit laws. He lost his re-election bid, but after that he begun his career in the Midwest. First as Archduke, then as Governor, he garnered a reputation for respect among even his opponents. He ran a hard, dedicated campaign for Senate in the Midwest against incumbent TNF, who had a significant advantage due to Labor registration in the region. In spite of that, Lumine tied TNF and could’ve gone to a run-off. Instead, he conceded due to voters invalidating their own ballots, and ran for At-Large Senate. Since then, he’s been cultivating an image of foreign policy guru and game reform enthusiast. He’s certainly one of the rising stars of the game, and a friend of the author.

You were a previous Governor of the Midwest, what would you say about the recent controversy over the Hate Crimes legislation? Would you support a repeal of the bill, or merely amending it?

I have to be completely honest with you here, when that bill has being discussed I followed some parts of the discussion, and at the beginning I failed to notice the problems related to how constitutional the bill actually was, perhaps because it was based on actually good intentions. With hindsight, I probably should have reflected on Cris’s concerns and then offer some advice to the Althing, so in my condition of former Governor and former Archduke I feel slightly responsible for not doing anything at the time. And yes, we need to repeal that bill and replace it with something with the same goal but with a constitutional and more efficient method. Gov. Windjammer said something that I find somewhat worrying when he talked about the right to free speech being silly. I understand his frustration and the context of that specific remark, but free speech shouldn’t really be negotiable in bills like that.

What would you say are your biggest goals for your tenure in the Senate?

You might say I tried to overreach in my Midwest Senate race, and while I put a comprehensive and complex platform I ended up leaving domestic policy to focus on foreign policy, game reform and the environment. As a result, my goals from now to when my term ends in early September are to continue my efforts in those areas which I feel have been neglected (expect for Game Reform, in which Griffin and Bore have done some fascinating work). I wish to resume my efforts for green energy with some plans for the cities and urban renewal, to see how to contain our rivals in the world and to contribute as much as I can to achieve significant Game Reform. Sure, I could do what most people do and focus on domestic bills, but if there’s an area in which we are practically doing nothing, I wish to focus on that.

Do you have any thoughts on the federal budget, whether we should make any changes in the upcoming year?

Being as candid as I can, I am quite worried about the next budget. So far the Senate as a whole has had some interesting proposals that I find quite interesting and worth some expenses, but so far all we have done is to spend more and more money (my own bills often have that problem, requiring a good amount of money to work). The next budget will have the problem of having to face the combined spending of TNF’s economic proposals, some tax cuts, my expenditures in energy and foreign policy and the health care issue, and I fear we may very well be in debt already (which is why I hope Simfan does the calculations as quick as he can). Broadly speaking, next budget should deal with spending and try to reduce it in some way. I’m not an expert in the economy, everybody knows that, but we must discuss what we want to cut if we want to pay for all the ideas we have passed. I’m pragmatic in the sense I would favor a raise in certain taxes, but there’s a limit to that before we start damaging our economy and the people itself. So far, I would only advocate for an increase in military spending, as I feel Senator TNF (and Labor in general) have led us into having a military that spends too little in regards to what it needs to maintain global capabilities.

Follow-up - Is there any part of the budget you feel, definitively, needs to be cut and why?

Well, a quick review of the Nix budget shows that most of the expenses are reasonable (or hard to cut), but I guess the two areas that stand out are Health Care and Labor. Health Care by itself consumed like a third of the budget, so that's an area in which we can significantly reduce the expense by introducing free market elements as Shua and Yankee are trying to do. Labor figures seem reasonable within that same budget, but we have passed a good amount of expenses in that front thanks to TNF, and I wouldn't mind cutting some of that.

You've been a strong advocate for talking more about foreign policy. What would you say we need to do differently on foreign policy?

This will sound awfully mischievous, but acknowledging that it exists might be a good step. You see, for most of the time I have been here all I hear about foreign policy Is related to Israel and Palestine, and right now SoEA Superique has managed to broker a peace deal in the Middle East, which means that soon we will be able to finally put that issue to rest. And then what? The issue here is that there are many challenges out there and many things we could and we should be doing, but most people here are exclusively devoted to the economy and domestic policy. China and Russia are expanding, and we need to act now and stand up for our allies (Japan in the South China Sea, Poland, Ukraine and so forth). Africa and South America are undergoing a crucial political process, and we have to be a part of that. I’m not advocating for military adventurism and scream “send the marines!” every time something happens in the world, but we must take stances and then act on them. If we can keep foreign policy in the public discourse then I am convinced the efforts will start coming, but we must start discussing foreign policy.

Follow-up - What can we do, if anything, about violations of intellectual property rights by China, who have a noted history of lawlessness in the area?

First of all, we need to send the message. It sounds obvious, but no administration so far has tried to confront China on this, and because of that nothing has stopped them from doing what they please. I have a firm belief in trade being a weapon on by itself, and if China has proved that they are quite willing to engage us aggresively by manipulating their currency, we might as well be willing to restrict trade and prove that nobody can do as they please in the world stage.

More to Come: Pacific Economy, Senate Approval, and will Lumine run for President?

The Porcupine Interview - Sentor LumineVonReuental Continued

The Pacific economy is returning, but still moving slowly. What reforms would you impose to speed up this economic growth if you were in charge?

First, I would honestly advice against any radical turn in economic policy for the region. The biggest problem the Pacific faces is more related to confidence than anything, and from a realistic point of view it’s hard to see most businessmen (from small or large business, it doesn’t matter) considering the Pacific an attractive place to go because of the issues related to governance. Tyrion, PJ and DemPGH have provided much needed stability and Oakvale’s efforts have managed to raise confidence and slowly reduce unemployment, so I think the recovery of the Pacific is something that will come slowly, perhaps over a year from now. What we could do is to experiment with the taxes in a creative way, an idea I drew from some of Riley’s proposals and some measures taken in the Midwest. If we could reduce some of the taxes that serve as a constraint to business to make the region competitive while we increase other taxes (I’m looking at the vice taxes here, as I feel an increase would actually have positive effects in reducing consume) to avoid a deficit, we could probably speed that recovery and growth. Of course this is just a theory; remember economic policy is not my area of expertise. In the issue of stimulus dollars, the Council has faced some issues when dealing with the PJ legacy of bills (which I view in a positive light, even if they are bills that should necessarily be a priority), but you can see them right now discussing what to make of the next stimulus (which comes in July-August), so I’m looking forward to see what they do.

Do you approve of the way the Senate has been doing its job, and if not, in what ways could the Senate do it better?

I would say I do. If we backtrack a little on to November and December, you had a Senate with a queue overloaded with bills and inactive Senators like Xahar and Napoleon, which I believe were nothing but a negative influence for the Senate. Our current Senate has some issues with inactivity (I’m inactive myself from time to time thanks to college and other issues), but so far it has done a great job and we are close to completing the queue (expect for the current group of TNF bills). Now, the credit for this obviously has to go to Yankee and Cincinnatus, as they have proved that they can manage the Senate more efficiently than anybody. I respect former VP Matt, but it has to be said that he was not efficient when it came to managing the Senate (and I understand that, it’s a tough and demanding job that I probably wouldn't like to do). Since I have started to let go of my proposal to recover the committees (perhaps the activity levels are not enough yet to bring them back), the only way the Senate can improve itself right now is by doing the personal effort to being more active, effort that all of us have to do.

And finally, the ambition question - Do you see yourself making another campaign for President, and do you support a Draft Riley movement, and if not, who do you think is a rising star in the Federalist Party, your new home?

This is where I should make the typical statement of being a Senator first and having to think it over and such, but I guess it’s better to be blunt over something like this… Yes, I certainly see myself making another campaign for President, and I think I could do a much better job than in October 2013. Of obvious reasons I’m not running now, since I fully support SirNick and Dallasfan, and I don’t think I will run in October as well, but you can count on me running again at some point in the future, whenever I feel I’m ready and that it is the right time for me. When it comes to Draft Riley, you might say I have mixed feelings. Riley is a rising star, and I have supported most of his efforts since he entered the game (with some exceptions, of course). If I had no candidate as of now, I would support the Draft Riley movement, but I have pledged my support to SirNick and I believe in him as the best candidate to lead and to defeat Labor. When it comes to rising starts in the Federalist Party, I believe Devin and Cassius hold a lot of promise for the future, and in the Presidential level I have already pointed out that DC al Fine and Dereich would be interesting Presidential candidates if they decided to run.

Thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Masked Vigilante on the Loose in Kentucky!

Louisville KY, Eyewitnesses in multiple neighborhoods report seeing a masked man attacking criminals on the street. The man is described as being Caucasian, in his 30's, wearing a red hood and cape, and rambling about everything being part of a vast rightwing conspiracy. Police say this vigilante, going by the name "Bandit, The Worker" is suspected of arson after several private schools in Louisville burned down last month, in addition to charges of obstruction of justice. There is also charges of theft after reports of the Bandit breaking into homes in the wealthier parts of town and stealing all the valuable items in the homes, only to drop them off outside of donation centers.

If you have any information on the Bandit, please contact the Louisville police.

Update: Police are now reporting that Bandit, The Worker has possible ties to another vigilante from Indiana. A younger part Native American male who has been referred to as the Green Hoosier. The Green Hoosier is suspected of being trained by and is the accomplice of the Bandit.

Interview with SWE

Q1: Since joining Atlasia, you were briefly part of the Progressive Union (which was moribund at that point) and have since joined Labor. How do you feel about the party?

When I first joined Atlasia, I didn't really understand much about it beyond what was directly stated in the "Introduction to Atlasia" thread, and looking at the descriptions of the parties in the threads, I thought the PU was best for me. However, as I learned more about the major parties in Atlasia, and as my own views started moving increasingly to the left, I realized that I'd be more at home within the Labor party. I feel that the Labor party has generally been a party to represent my views the the PU was.

Q2: How long have you been in the Northeast Assembly?

I was elected last February and an currently serving my second term.

Q3: How would you critique the current and previous sessions? Do you think there is room for improvement?

In general, I think that the previous session was more productive than the current one, and there's certainly some room for improvement, but both sessions have been pretty productive. The Northeast Assembly has been a little quiet lately, with only two bills currently sitting in the queue, especially compared to last session, when it seemed like we always had something to debate. I do think that there's room for improvement, definitely, although for the most part I've been satisfied with both sessions.

Q4: What issues would you like to pursue, either in this session or future ones? How do you feel about the remaining legislation in the queue?

Having recently passed a ban on private prisons, criminal justice reform is a big issue for me, and I'd like to read more of our regional statute on the issue and see what reforms are still necessary. Health Care and environmental protection are two other big issues I'd like to address that I really haven't done much on already. I support both bills currently in the queue.

Q5: Do you have any ambitions for higher office?

Right now, I'm pretty happy where I am. I like both the Northeast's regional governor and senator, so I don't really plan on challenging either. If I did try for a higher office, it'd be the next At-Large Senate races

Q6: How do you feel about the June presidential election?

I've endorsed the DemPGH/Windjammer ticket (no offense :P) and am happy to give them my full support. Both have been highly effective governors that worked hard to restore regions struggling with activity. I have no doubt that they would make a fantastic President/Vice president team.

The Porcupine Interview - Senator TNF

Senator TNF and Senator Lumine, despite their combative ways, started in very much the same way. TNF ran for the Mideast legislature, and nearly won. Seeing a low potential for the future in the Mideast and the retirement of Senator Snowstalker, he decided to run for Senate in the Midwest. Since then, TNF has become the premier voice for The Labor Party, pushing policies of the far left consistently and adamantly. TNF has faced tough re-election bids in the Midwest, but has never wavered from his positions on the issues and has fought hard for his ideas.

You made your voice clear during the constitutional controversy over Hate Crimes legislation in the Midwest, and yet I didn't pick up your full views. Do you support making hate crime laws, and if so why?

At the present juncture, I do not support legislating hate crime laws at the federal level. I understand the support for such legislation and think that such legislation would ultimately be constitutional, given correct wording (and I think this extends to a ban on "Hate Speech", quite frankly), but I do not think that this is something that needs to be written into our legal code at the present time, nor would I vote in favor of such legislation if it were brought to the floor of the Senate in the near future.

You've stood strong against Senator Lumine's Ukraine aide legislation. What is your view of how Atlasia should interact in the world, and more particularly, in the situation with Russia?

I think that Atlasia should interact with the world on a peaceful basis, first and foremost. The situation in Crimea is volatile and quite frankly, I don't think we should be in the business of aiding or abetting either the Russian attempt at annexation or the new government in Kiev, which is composed entirely of elements hostile to democracy. And I have made myself clear to that effect, which is why I oppose Senator Lumine's efforts to aid this anti-democratic, right-wing government in Ukraine, while likewise supporting efforts to condemn the Russians for their imperial actions in the region. In stating that, I also understand that past Atlasian policy (specifically the expansion of NATO) has something to do with these developments, and I likewise condemn our own imperialist acts. The future of Ukraine should entirely be in the hands of the Ukrainian people, not of the armies of Russia or Atlasia.

Follow-Up - When, if ever, should Atlasia use force against another region?

I would say that Atlasia should only use force if force is first used against it.

Your record is full of legislative accomplishments, but your particular focus seems to be on Labor. What would you say the next step is for Atlasian Labor?

I think that the next step forward largely rests on challenging the hiring and investment prerogatives of Capital. That means, essentially, building up a strong cooperative sector and increasing direct control over production and investment decisions by workers themselves, acting through their trade unions. I think that every workplace that has a union ought to have a union hiring hall, and that the unions should be responsible (through an elected works council) for the day-to-day management of their workplace. I think that unions should be given seats on corporate boards (my most recent effort at this failed, but make no mistake, it will be revived and I do expect to see it passed before my retirement) and that gradually, workers should become the major shareholders in every industry, perhaps along the lines of what was ultimately unsuccessfully tried in Sweden in the 1970s.

Fundamentally I think that the next moves for Atlasian Labor are all those which put it in a revolutionary position. The time is ripe for the workers of this country to assume the management of the industries that they work in, and move us into a post-capitalist (if not necessarily post-market, at first) stage of development.

One big bill that you have supported fervently is the nationalization of energy. Why do you support this and what is your justification for such a large change in our handling of the situation?

I think that energy is a utility and should be treated as one. We don't let private fire brigades operate, we don't have private police, and so it's kind of ridiculous that we have a private energy sector, a sector that is, in and of itself, something that all other sectors feed off of. We saw what that lead to in the 1970s when the oil shocks hit and threw us for a loop; nationalizing energy means reclaiming control over our energy. It means being able to rationally plan out future production and phase out harmful carbon polluting energies derived from fossil fuels.

Follow-Up - You pointed to the 70s as evidence for the case for nationalization. The opposition to this argument points to price controls as the reason  for the harsh time in our energy history. Would you agree with that assessment? Or is your evaluation of history different.

It is commonly argued that price controls cause shortages by reducing the incentive of the capitalist to invest and expand production or even maintain existing production. The difference between a price control and nationalization is of course that price controls retain private production of a given commodity, and thus given an incentive for the capitalist to act in a way contrary to the public interest. Nationalization, on the other hand, removes the capitalist from the equation, allowing for regulated production of a given item in addition to allowing for lower prices. The problem with price controls is that they do too little, not too much; the real way forward in guaranteeing affordable production is the elimination of capitalist ownership and management of industry.

Ambition - You ran for President last cycle, and you did a lot better than people expected. Could you see another run in your future? Or was that stand the last one?

You never want to rule anything out, but for the time being I am content with my position in the Senate. I am quite happy with our (presumptive) nominee, Governor DemPGH, and would be delighted to be able to work with both he and Governor Windjammer in Nyman come July.

The Porcupine Interview - Former Senator Ben

Benconstine maybe one of the most experienced politicians in all of Atlasia. A former Governor, Senator, Secretary of External Affairs, Ambassador, Attorney General, and Mideast Assemblyman, he's served Atlasia in just about every capacity. It's no secret in the past that he's had Presidential ambitions, and even ran for President once against Oakvale and Tmth. His overall views are known to most Atlasians - On domestic issues he's a genuine Atlasian centrist, while on foreign policy is one of the nation's premier hawks. These views put him somewhat out of step of the country (which is left leaning) and his region (which is increasingly moving to the right), and yet, he won many competitive races in the Mideast. Now he's running for Senate again on the same things he's been pushing for since the beginning.

You've had a long career in Atlasian politics. What position would you say you accomplished the most in and what were your accomplishments in that position?

I served in the Senate for over a year, representing the Mideast.  During my tenure I instituted the committee system, made foreign policy a priority, introduced legislation legalizing online poker, and limited the ability of CEOs to commit crimes and keep their pensions.

Follow-Up - Would you say the committee system was a success or a failure? Would you try to re-institute the committee system?

I think, ultimately, people just weren't committed to the system.  I wouldn't try to bring it back, simply because I don't think enough people would want to be actively involved.

One position you've held rather prominently is SoEA. Could you give readers not so familiar with your record a glimpse into how you view Atlasia should behave in the scope of the world?

I believe that Atlasia needs to utilize its position in the world to help spread democracy, and to help our allies.  I am a firm believer in a strong military, and that we cannot be afraid to use that military when the situation calls for it.

Follow-Up - How do we handle violations of intellectual property rights by China?

After a while, we have to start applying actual sanctions on China.  I'm not an expert on the appropriate type of sanction, but we have to protect intellectual property rights.

The last position you held at a federal level was Attorney General, and you were impeached for inactivity in one of the major roles of the job. How can voters be reassured that you will not become inactive if elected Senator?

I was stupid.  I took the position of AG not expecting to need to devote time to the wiki.  Even while I was failing in that regard, I was never inactive overall.  This won't be a problem with the Senate.

Follow-Up - You didn't answer the full question, how can you reassure voters that you will be an active Senator?

At a certain point, all I can do is give my word.

What is your position on reducing tax rates in Atlasia, and do you agree with the Duke plan, or do you think we should take a different route?

I think we need tax cuts, but that they should be focused towards those least able to pay.  I think the Duke cuts lean too much towards the rich, and I'd seek to correct that.

Finally, the demographics of the Mideast have changed dramatically. Can you see yourself winning this race, and how would you do it?

I can.  I plan to run as a moderate, tied to neither extreme.  That's how I've run my races in the Mideast before, and I don't see why it won't work now.

The Porcupine Interview - Former Everything Tmth

Today the Porcupine is blessed with perhaps the most experienced person in Atlasia - Former Senator, Governor, Vice President, and President Tmthforu94. Say what you will about him, and many have, his record of election victory and accomplishment is nearly unmatched in Atlasia history. He was the first President of Atlasia's right-wing in years when elected, and even after a prominent scandal, many voters were willing to put him back in office for another term. He recently left his post in the Senate after winning his re-election bid confidently, and ran for President for a short while. He is still someone who people are wondering what is next for, and that is not too common among Atlasian Presidents.

On the budget, President Duke has been pushing for a tax cut. Do you think the tax cut the President has proposed is the right one, and if not, what kind of tax cut, if any, would you propose?

I am supportive of the President's attempt to bring taxes in Atlasia down to reasonable levels. This is a game and I understand that the easy approach is to raise revenue that many see is by raising taxes. Once you take into account what our taxes are, especially income and corporate, at both the federal and regional level, I don't find them to be practical at all, and if this were reality, our economy would be in the tanks as a result.

Follow-Up: Is there any area you think we are spending too much money on?

Without going through the budget, one area I know that we write a huge check on is education between the federal and regional governments.

Senator Lumine has made a push for more conversation on foreign policy. Do you have any observations from your years of experience that you think we have done wrong in the world sphere, and how would you correct wrong doing?

I applaud Senator Lumine for trying to make foreign affairs more relevant. While I have never considered myself an expert on foreign policy, I have been apart of several attempts to create interest, but the facts are that most people don't really care - domestic issues will always take precedence.

In terms of what we have done wrong, we have increasingly had a diminished presence worldwide - Presidents rarely take foreign trips or comment on global issues. Similar to our tax policy, if this were RL, our foreign policy would also be in the tanks.

You ran for President for a short while, but dropped out and endorsed Winfield. With Winfield gone and only left Sirnick and DemPGH, what are your views on the race, and would you endorse either candidate for President?

Sirnick and DemPGH both strike me as pretty capable individuals, but I am disappointed that the center-right faction, particularly the Federalists and D-Rs, have been unable to come together and run their own ticket. We need a real contrast in policies in this election - it's what keeps the game going. At this point in time, I don't see myself endorsing, and even if I did, I doubt it would make much of a difference. :)

Follow-up - What do you think is the biggest issue the next President is going to have to face in the upcoming year?

Keeping people involved in the game over a long period of time.

Finally, ambition. As said before, you had announced a run for President, only shortly after to withdraw. Are you planning a comeback of sorts into the game, or are you still relaxing at your Presidential beach house?

I am enjoying my time away - I wanted to test the waters several weeks ago, only to withdraw after feeling confident in Winfield's abilities to lead the center-right. I was sad to see him depart. I am sad that I had to leave the game so abruptly back in February, but I do feel that it was the right decision for me. Never say never - I have come back from retirement before. But I am pretty comfortable in the position I am in now. :)

Thank you for speaking with us Tmth!

Supreme Court strikes down Hate Crimes Legislation

June 11th, 2014 - Supreme Court Justice Oakvale announced the decision today to strike down the Midwest Hate Crimes Legislation, ruling in favor of Snowstalker in the case of Snowstalker v. The Midwest. A large part of Oakvale's opinion seemed to point at the poorly written nature of the bill, citing it as a reason that the bill would be completely unenforceable, and therefore, unconstitutional. In a more obvious arguement though, Oakvale cited the freedom of speech as a reason to strike down both the Hate Crimes part of the bill and Verbal Abuse part.

Oakvale's opinion can be seen here (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=192565.msg4193439#msg4193439) and here (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=192565.msg4193441#msg4193441). More opinions from the other justices to come.

Federalist Endorsement Vote - Nick in the Lead

June 15th, 2014 -- While we can not predict the result yet, we have a strong number, and we can make a statement about the current results within the Federalist Endorsement vote. After a long period of NOTA winning, the Former GM and Northeast Governor Sirnick has taken a lead over Pacific Governor and Former Vice President DemPGH and NOTA. Still, it's a wonder if he will take a majority - It's up to the discretion of Federalist Chairman Yankee to decide if he will pick the winner by plurality or by majority, and he may just leave the race endorsement-less through that decision. The results are as follows at this point in time -

Federalist Endorsement Results (As of 9:23 PM)
Former GM and NE Governor Sirnick - 48%
PA Governor and Former VP DemPGH - 22%
NOTA - 30%

We will continue to follow the votes as they come in.

The Porcupine Interview - President Duke

1. What do you think has been your biggest accomplishment so far as President?

I think my defining moment came when I decided to tackle the Pacific cluster**k that had been allowed to go on for far too long, even before RimJob. The pacific had been dead since the JCP's dismantling, and it had appeared as if most had left it for dead, which didn't sit well with me. After consolidation failed early in my first term, I made it my goal to make sure all 5 regions were functioning properly and had the opportunity to grow and expand, and I think that the team that worked on the Pacific, including oakvale and DemPGH, accomplished that. Today the Pacific is a thriving region with an active council, and those effects will hopefully be felt and continue long after I leave office.

2. Do you regret doing anything (or anyone) during your term?

I tend to live without regrets because the past is the past, and we cannot dwell on it or we will never progress to a better future. I guess legislatively, there were a few bills I signed that I should have paid closer attention to, but it was during my exams and I tend to be spacey when I have so much going on in my head. Those are more mistakes than regrets though. I can't really say I regret anything. I think I have been fair and open minded towards most everyone during my tenure. No shame in that!

3. Do you believe your presidency has been successful?

Yes and no. Activity wise, I wish it had been better. When I came into office, there was tremendous hope that Atlasia would stop its downward trend that had been occurring post-dissolution, where we had a spike in activity and then a slow, gradual decrease in activity. Early on, a lot of my old friends returned to the game, wanting to help me and be active, but then real life got in the way of all of us and that never panned out. There were periods of activity followed by lulls. Something people must understand is, activity is only as good as we, as a whole, make it. The President can't manufacture activity very well. I tackled consolidation and government reform early in my first term and failed, and now we are trying to again as I am preparing to leave office. If we can pass something, I'd be thrilled.

Legislatively, it has been successful. We have managed to pass all my big campaign promises, from tax reform, the a Pacific package, to small business loan programs, mental healthcare reform, (hopefully) education reform and technology expansion, and labor relations and rights improvements. Healthcare reform has also been on my to do list, but bar study has gotten in the way, and the rest of the Senate hasn't made much headway either sans Yankee. However, I remain confident we can pass something before the next administration comes in.

4. Why do you believe the 'Era of Good Feeling' is over?

The Era was a glorious time where we all held hands in harmony, or at least the dissenters typically kept to themselves. Over the last few weeks, partisanship and the like has heated up, which isn't bad at all for the game, considering how tame the last 2 elections were. I mean, who attacked me last time I ran outside of some disgruntled right wingers? Very few. That was good and bad.

Now, we see the right attacking the left and the left firing back. The Senate still seems to be working well, but it's clear day to day, partisanship is on the rise, and I don't view that as a bad thing at all.

5. How would you rate the Senate? Was it more productive in your first or your second term?

First term was far more productive in terms of overall activity. I think we set a record for legislation passed during that time, including a record number of redrafts. My second term has been plagued by more inactivity, with Alfred tied up with studying and Tyrion's admitted distractions in his life. The queue has also dried up to the point where we have tons of open slots and nothing to fill them with. All of this is too bad, because Cinci has been a great VP..

6. The next presidential election is coming up very soon, will you endorse any candidate?

I am on the fence about making a public endorsement. I'm not sure if my endorsement will carry any weight. I have relationships with both candidates. SirNick has been a longtime supporter of mine and I always like supporting my supporters, and DemPGH and I worked closely together in the Pacific and we have had great success there. If I do come to a decision on whether to make a public endorsement, it will be close to the election. I am leaning towards one candidate, but that is all I will say.

7. Do you believe your actions in the Pacific saved the region?

Absent a GM report, who knows, but in terms of activity, I do think our actions influenced the current outcome there. I believe one GM report did show unemployment down to 15% from a high of 25%, so something good happened there. I don't take all credit for it though, oakvale, the governor, the council and the citizens all pitched in and made it what it is today. I think some of the policies we forced down their throats have led to job creation and growth, and I'm happy about that. I just want to thank all of them for their hard work during this period. As I have always said, I couldn't do it all alone.

8. Will you serve in another elected position soon?

Who knows. I've pretty much served in every office known to man. The South's governor, a senator, an IDS legislator, VP, and now President. I have accomplished really all there is to accomplish in Atlasia, sans being a cabinet member, but I have no idea if I'd ever want to do that. If my government reform plan passes and becomes a reality, I might want to serve in the House. Who knows? I will be stepping away from public office for a bit with the bar, job interviews and the like consuming most of my attention, but I do plan to stay involved however I can.

9. Do you feel the Federalist Party has been fair to you during your term?

I don't like to rehash past events. Obviously, both sides had a communication issue during my first term, and that culminated with Maxwell's announcement to run for President prior to my re-election decision than then Reaganfan's near victory during the primary. I certainly understood their issues with me, but I had never pretended to be a right winger when I ran for office, so I felt the expectations of me were a bit unrealistic. I do think we have accomplished some legislative things Federalists should be happy with, but I know we will never see eye to eye. I have always had the backing of the people closest to me, and I am thankful for that. You can't force everyone to like you.

10. Will you join The People's Party after your term is over?

I won't say one way or the other where I will go after office. Obviously, The Party is my home and the first run we had was some of the most fun I have ever had in this game, and I consider that team to be the dream team, Nix, Cinci, myself, Polnut, Oakvale, Ben, etc. If we can all reunite again someday, great. But I am very close to Senator Yankee and he has been one of my best friends and most loyal allies in Atlasia for years and years, and I will do what I need to do for him in the Federalist Party should it continue to exist in the future, whether I am a part of it or a part of something else. He and I told each other years ago we would always have each other's backs, and that has been true always, even when it wasn't politically expedite to support each other. For that, he has my eternal support.

11. Why are you taking this (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=181577.msg4197858#msg4197858) course of action regarding the Iraq situation?

The situation in Iraq is concerning. We can't let the country fall to the terrorist insurgence because then we destabilize the region, which is especially sad considering we just reached a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. On the other hand, I do not want to get back into an all-out war with Iraq, which will drain resources and kill off our best and brightest. We are going with airstrikes initially and working with our international allies to determine what else can be done. One thing is for sure, it is not in our best interest to leave this alone because an Iraq run by terrorists is not one that is good for anyone in the world.

12. What moment has been your favorite so far as President?

Moment? God, that's difficult. We threw some radical gay parties over the last few months, especially when we granted asylum to all the handsome boys all over the world to come to our humble land. I think Matt and I's improbable victory in the Federalist Primary in February was also a lot of fun, because frankly, we expected to lose it given the polling data and general sentiment that the Feds would rather lose the election to prove a point. So when some votes went the opposite way than we expected, it gave us new energy. I also had a lot of fun during the Pacific Stimulus debate, and it was the first time that the Federal government really interacted that closely with a region. We typically view both sides as separate entities with little interaction. I wish that wasn't the case.

But hey, thanks for interviewing me. Believe it or not, no one ever asks to interview me. This is only my second one in all the years I have played this game. I guess no one finds me interesting enough, who knows. My first was on Yankee's news network. :P

Maybe this will start a trend and people will knock down my doors to ask me questions!

Porcupine's First Results Update

As of TNF

Presidential Race
DemPGH/Windjammer - 63%
Sirnick/Dallasfan65 - 37%

Too early to call a prediction, but in terms of the figures, things don't look good for Sirnick.

Pacific
Flo - 75%
Tyrion - 13%
Superique - 13%

One of two very shocking results, Flo not only leads, but leads big. If he holds this even a little, it looks like he would be headed toward a Senate seat. Still, not enough numbers to give this a solid call.

Northeast
Bore - 56%
Deus Naturae - 44%

As expected, Bore holds a narrow lead over Deus. The left-leaning nature of the Northeast allows Bore to survive consistent competitive elections, and I suspect that will happen again. Still, turn out is high in this election, so I would keep an eye on this race and see if Deus can't turn this thing around.

IDS
N.C. Yankee - 50%
Maxwell - 40%
Abstain - 10%

Yankee holds a narrow lead, but later voters look to lean Yankee, so we'll see.

Midwest
RR1997 - 58%
TNF - 42%

RR1997 still holds a lead, but TNF looks to be creeping up on RR1997 slowly but surely.

Mideast
DC Al Fine - 67%
Madman Motley - 25%
Benconstine - 8%

Running an active campaign, DC Al Fine is looking like he will win his re-election in a walk. He faced two challengers, Madman Motley, and Former Attorney General Benconstine, and as expected, did not face much of a challenge. We will see how these results play out later.

Decision 2014: An odd coalition emerges

As the real race for President is officially underway with polls open, Labor is expected to have very strong showing this cycle. As expected by many, DemPGH has taken the lead and is holding strong against the People's Party candidate Sirnick, whose ticket includes Dallasfan of the Democratic-Republican Party and has been endorsed by the Federalists. What has been surprising however is the high number if votes DemPGH is receiving from Federalist voters. As of last count a little under half of the Federalist voters have voted Labor. If trends hold, then DemPGH is set to become President with the backing a very odd coalition of voters.

Porcupine Interview - SOEA and Senate Candidate Superique

The current Secretary of External Affairs, Superique has a history in the Pacific. He was one of the last members of the Liberal Party, and tried to lift activity in the region as the Pacific speaker. His efforts, unfortunately, failed, and he was recalled. This was during the darkest period of the Pacific, during Operation Rimjob. Since then, Superique tried to restore trust in his ability, and since his appointment as SoIA, he has proven to be one of the strongest cabinet members in Atlasia history. He's been known for his policy chops, and now he's running for Senate, challenging Senator Tyrion on his activity. As a member of TPP, his stances seem to be nuanced, centrist, and pragmatic.

You've been a Pacifican since the beginning. How do you feel about the current Pacific Legislature, and is there anything more they can do about their economic situation?

I’m quite pleased with the current Pacific Legislature. All of them, Cranberry, Devin and Flo, are doing an outstanding job and I’m quite happy that they are being able to bring economic recovery and balancing the budget. Obviously, that is something that doesn’t involve just the councilmen and I might say that President Duke, Governor DemPGH and Crisis Manager Oakvale participation were extremely crucial for the success of the current Pacific Recovery.

Now, regarding to other options to bring more economic recovery, I must say that in the regional level we are bringing the right balance of actions: low or zero deficits may arrive in the next budget, low tax rates (based on the previous levels) and thousands of investment on development and growth.  During Duke’s Administration, there were some similar movements to attract investments on the federal level, such as tax cuts and even a package of aid for the Pacific Region. Even so, I believe that we can do more: I would consider revising some of our current Labor legislation and some of our regulatory mechanisms to see if we can bring more flexibility when hiring people and bring more investments to the nation. After all, we have Nixcome and this minimum income allow us to bring more flexibility to labor laws without harming The People of this nation.

You're running for Senator of the Pacific. Do you have any specific criticisms of Senator Tyrion, and what would you bring to the Senate that is different from what Tyrion has brought?

I don’t think that Tyrion is a bad senator and I don’t believe that he is being that inactive but, if you compare his second term to his first, you can see that he could have been doing more. I applaud his efforts on Game Reform and I would like not to abandon that. However, I think that this nation is being far complacent with TNF bulk of regulatory laws and the Senate needs someone to bring more opposition to those bills.

I didn’t want to be controversial but it seems to me that the current leadership of the Labor Party is taking more radical decisions than on previous years. The Labor Party has a strong and gradual plan; they were able to make Atlasia a Social Democracy in many ways and I’m not opposed to that but now they are following to a more Socialist plan which I cannot agree and cope with. I believe that gradually giving control of our companies to unions and moving forward with nationalizations are dangerous for the progress of the very some workers that Labor intend to support. Those new measures, that are part of a program of “Empowerment”, may leave some unintended consequences on our economy.

I have a more pragmatic view and I see that those new measures that clearly have a Socialist base are not going to be good to our people.  Is distributing wealth important? Sure, but creating wealth is also crucial.  When you start with a bunch of new regulations, new nationalizations and more taxation, you end up harming growth and in the end you may very well harm your redistribution efforts.  Moreover, we’ve got to take a look at our budgets, we are spending on Foreign Aid, Tax Cuts and social programs but we don’t know where the money is coming.  It’s time to create a Budgetary Commission and, on day 1 as Senator, I will propose legislation that creates a Senate Commission to calculate our current debt and start proposing measures to reduce it.

On the healthcare conversation, what, if anything, do you view as wrong with our current healthcare system, and what would you change?

The idea behind Fritzcare is a good one but the system is so confusing that is even hard to make a good diagnosis of its situation. There are concerns if providers are being paid properly, there are concerns over its financing and there is a concern if it’s a single-payer system or if it’s a public option in a market system. I think that we must answer those doubts and make a system that is first of all understandable and sustainable.

I’m currently enjoying the changes proposed by Shua and Yankee and I would probably support them. If private insurers are able to provide better care than the public insurer, why then should we prohibit them? Having Fritzcare as a public option competing against private insurers is totally fine to me and, in the end, I believe that Fritzcare will prevail against the others, but if it doesn’t, it’s not a problem either because that would mean that workers had found out better options for them. Nonetheless, I’m concerned with ideas such as reforming our healthcare system to become a Singapore Style one and I’m also worried about attempts to end with the Fritzcare Board that help to reduce inefficiency and abuse.

What are your views on the Iraq situation, and why should we intervene?

First of all, there are many libertarian and some communist citizens of Atlasia that are worried about Iraq and which actions we are going to make. I just want to stress that we are not planning a full-scale war there and it’s not mines and President Duke’s desire to put ground troops on the region.  Now, stressing that, we can talk more calmly about Iraq.

The things is that we played a very important role on this country’s instability and now it’s time to help their government with these insurgency that is coming up.  The Iraqi Government is asking for our help and we shall help them. The ISIS is extremely dangerous; it’s a radical Sunni group that is promoting massive killings over Iraq and promoting sectarianism, moreover, they have strong ties with terrorist groups. If ISIS is able to take power in Iraq, then we are going to face more instabilities in the Middle East and a wide spread of terrorism across the globe and that’s something that we don’t need to see if we make a pragmatic support to the Iraqi Armed Forces.

The White House and I want a very “clinical” intervention with multilateral aspects.  We are sending drones and intelligence agents for them and we are considering aerial support for their actions but this is not a unilateral move. I’m having talks with NATO Nations and we are approaching Turkey and Iran. There’s not a single parallel with the 2003 Iraqi War and we are going to be very careful. I don’t want an imperialistic Atlasia but we need to know that if we don’t do anything in Iraq and let them fight, we will probably help to foster more instability in the region, giving more incentives to the Sunni and Shiite conflict, raising oil prices and dismantling part of the confidence that we were able to bring to the region with the Israel-Palestine Deal and that’s something that not a single Atlasian want.

Finally ambition - You ran for Vice President on a ticket with LumineVonReuental, do you think you could run for President in the future?

Yes, I would love to be President but I’m not thinking of running anytime soon, maybe next year. I have been SoIA, I’m SoEA, and The People know what I can offer to them. I just hope I can elect to another post before trying to run for President. I’m not that good when it comes to votes so I hope I can revert that trend first xD
