Title: Any input about Dave's redistricting software? WSJ is interviewing me tomorrow.
Post by: Torie on December 28, 2010, 11:02:38 PM
I am going to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal tomorrow about Dave's redistricting software. If any of you have any input about it that you want to share with me, feel free to, and I might pass it along. Thanks.

I guess I would point out that it's rather useless for districts located entirely or mostly within a single county.

Why are you being interviewed? Seems random. :P

BRTD mentioned me it turns out, and I received an email from the reporter.

And yes, the intra county population shifts within counties since 2000 is not reflected in Bradlee's population numbers (he just assumes everywhere in the county grew or shrank at the same rate from 2000 to 2009), so in larger counties, where there have been significant shifts, that will substantially degrade the accuracy of the maps, and probably generate some Dem bias, since typically the intra county population shifts in raw numbers would tend to favor the Pubbies in general.

Did he? I referred him to you, too, in that case. My name is first on the Dave's Redistricting App thread which is likely why he PM'd me to begin with.

Or it could be because I referred him to you as well. :)

I reffered him to Muon2. It seemed kind of weird, especially since it was like Christmas ever or the day before. And its not like I had anything to talk to him about.

It looks like this poor guy has been given the runaround by us. ;)

I'd like him to make it possible to redistrict States that have only one district IRL, like Vermont or Montana.

Nice, let us know when the story comes out. I don't have any input on the software :)

Yes, I was interviewed in three sessions over the course of about 70 minutes or so. It will be awhile until the article comes out however. Yadron did want to interview my "wife" however, to ask her which she thinks of my spending so much time with my mappies. That led the conversation off in other directions. :)

He asked about my motivations, what I think the impact will be of all this free lance map making, what I planned to do with my maps, how I designed them, and so forth. I explained my methodology, my matrix charts, what PVI meant, how I use PVI, and on and on. And I discussed the  steel mill rivers emanating out of Pittsburgh, and the ensuing tale of the tentacles of my PA-14 CD.

Hopefully I will have some more material for him as I get feedback from the powers that be about my maps.
