Title: 1964: Nixon vs. HHH vs. Wallace
Post by: Thomas D on September 19, 2011, 05:52:37 PM
Final 1960 Map:

(
)

Nixon 284-245-8

Nixon Signs the Civil Rights Act and The Voting Rights Act in the Summer of 1963. In Spring 1964 President Nixon commits 350,000 troops to Southeast Asia. Humphrey wins the Democratic nomination and runs on an antiwar platform. Wallace, Upset at two Pro Civil Rights candidates, runs as an independent.

Discuss with maps and pick running mates if you'd like.

Your map is pretty much accurate, in my opinion. I think Wallace would win more Southern states, and choose someone like Happy Chandler as a running mate. Nixon would drop Lodge, probaly pick someone else. Maybe Rockefeller, or Gerald Ford. Humphrey would pick someone else, maybe John Kennedy, though thats unlikely. Perhaps Senator Byrd from WV would balance the ticket?

Thanks. But that's the 1960 map. I think Nixon would keep Lodge. Here's my 1964 map:

Humphrey-255
Nixon-167
Wallace-116

Wallace lacked the money or name recognition to make a serious effort in 1964 on the national stage. His primary challenges were conducted McGyver style as it was.

I think that Robert C. Byrd (although he was up for re-election) would be a good VP candidate for Dixiecrat ticket. He would appeal to Outer South. As running-mate to Humphrey, I can see Ed Muskie, John Pastore, Abe Ribicoff, Ralph Yarborough, Endicott Peabody and even Wayne Morse.

Richard Nixon (R-CA)/Henry Cabot Lodge (R-MA)
Hubert Humphrey (D-MN)/Carl Sanders (D-GA)
Ross Barnett (SRD-MS)/John Jarman (SRD-OK)

Pretty there would've been WWIII due to Nixon's handling of the Cuban missile crisis
So either blowout for HHH or no USA

WWIII? Really? This alone happening I find hard to believe, let alone from Mr. ForeignPolicyMastermind himself.
