Nixon cannot run for a third term. Here is my guess for 1968.

D: Henry "Scoop" Jackson (WA) / Asa Willis Robertson (VA), 272 EV
R: Barry Goldwater (AZ) / Robert Taft Jr. (OH), 166 EV
I: Nelson Rockefeller (NY) / Eugene McCarthy (MN), 100 EV

With Nixon's Vietnam and Cuban War policies causing a drop in his popularity, the rising conservative wing of the GOP triumphs and with the influence of Senator Strom Thurmond, a former Democrat who switched parties prior to the convention, southern delegates fall in line and nominate Barry Goldwater over Vice President Henry Cabot Lodge.

After the Democratic and Republican parties nominate hawkish candidates, Governor Rockefeller runs as an independent and picks McCarthy as his running mate to attract anti-war and Catholic votes.

However, Jackson's "Southern Strategy" featuring his platform of ending the wars with honor and opposing busing appeals to blue collar voters and conservative southerners gets him over the top and into the White House.

Whoops sorry DC's meant to be green.

1960
Nixon drops the 50 state tour bs and picks NJ Senator Clifford Case as his running mate instead of Cabot Lodge.
In his first term, he invades Cuba and paves the way for its future statehood. He also goes to war with Vietnam, signs the Voting Rights Act, Civil Rights Act and gives DC representation in the electoral college.

1964
Nixon drops Nam war opponent Case from the ticket and picks Senator James Glenn Beall of Maryland.
Dems nominate LBJ and HHH, who go after Nixon for trampling states rights' and the constitution.

1968
Republicans nominate VP Beall and Sen Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, Dems nominate George Smathers and Scoop Jackson and Progressive Massachusetts Senator RFK rides the sympathy wave after his bro Jack's death from addison's disease with eugene mccarthy.

I really can't see Nelson Rockefeller and Eugene McCarthy at one ticket.

It's like a McGovern/McCarthy ticket really.

LBJ was 'elected' (in the George W BUsh sense of the word) Senator as a conservative Taft-Hartley supporting Dixiecrat. In the Senate, he would vote against Ike's Civil Rights Act. I'm not sure if HHH was as expedient a politician as LBJ, but in this context he might need him for regional/ideological balance, e.g. Bartlett-Hoynes or
Roosevelt-Garner. Men like Johnson and Nixon knew how to play the game.

DC's Green because poor African Americans are not quite ready to turn to their new enfranchisers in the GOP, but watchful of the social ConservaDems like George Smathers and LBJ who run the party, so they turn to the new Progressive Party of people like RFK, Maggie Chase Smith and Eugene McCarthy.
