This thread is created in anticipation of my first election as SoFE. I will ask Gustaf to sticky this.

A preliminary ballot will be posted later today.

This election is held in accordance with Article V of the Constitution and with the Consolidated Electoral System Reform Act.  The regular election begins at 23:59 EDT, Thursday, February 16th, and ends at 23:59 EDT, Sunday, February 19th.

DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE THE POST CONTAINING YOUR BALLOT IN ANY WAY AFTER 20 MINUTES OF ITS BEING POSTED OR YOUR VOTE WILL BE INVALIDATED

The act of campaigning within the election booth is strictly forbidden and will render void any votes made by those who campaign. The act of campaigning is considered to include, but is not limited to, strong attempts to compel others either to vote or not to vote for one or multiple candidates, or other related activities that could reasonably be construed as a direct attempt to influence how future voters cast their ballots. In other words, this is not a discussion thread. In short, the department will be taking a liberal interpreation of this, so Keep posts to votes only.

Place the numbers 1, 2, etc. in the space provided beside the candidates who you wish to vote for to designate your order of preference for these candidates.  If any other mark or attempt to order the candidates is made, the Department of Forum Affairs will make every effort to deduce voter intent from the content of the ballot, but the warning must be issued that failure to follow the above instructions may result in the invalidation of your ballot in the event of an inability to discern voter intent.  You are an eligible voter in general if you were registered to vote on or before the proper date, and if you made 15 posts in any location within the Atlas Forum in the 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the regular election. In other words, if your name appears on the Census list (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=143164.0), you can presume you are eligible.  

In the event that you do not support any listed candidate or that you support one or many candidates that are not listed in addition to those that are, you may write in other candidates and include them in your list of preferences.  Space is provided for one such write-in, but as many can be listed as you wish.  In the event that you do not support any listed candidate, and do not wish to write in any candidate, you may place an X or a 1 beside "None of the above", and only beside "None of the above".  In the event that an X or a 1 appears beside "None of the above" on a ballot, all other marks or numbers will be ignored.  It is not permissible under current election law to vote for both "None of the above" and other candidates.

Note that voting begins at midnight and ends in exactly 72 hours.

Great, now I need to check every ballot for those little nuances...

What's more, pretty sure anyone who doesn't name a VP in their vote is technically voting for [Presidential candidate]/Vacant, which is technically a different ticket from [Presidential candidate]/[running-mate].

No, I don't think so. Ebowed/Q semi-stole an election this way and the law was changed to be more specific.

But I think you when you specifically write-in a different VP, it doesn't count.

The election for the seat vacated by Sen. Polnut will be held March 9-11. If Sen. 20RP12 resigns this week, there will be an election for those two seats. If he resigns on or after March 7, there will be a second special election from March 16-18.

How so? You would still be allowed to accept write-ins that begun happening after you voted for somebody else... but you'd have to decide before the polls close.
I think taking a self-write-in (even at a low preference) as an acceptance of write-in votes is just precedent.

Luckily it did not cause a problem in this election, but in all subsequent elections, I will accept as valid all votes cast for write-in candidates who write their own names, unless the Senate passes a law otherwise. That should clear up any problems we might have in the future.

A special election to the Senate will be held from April 6 to April 8 to fill the vacancies created by the resignations of At-large Senators Oakvale and Junkie and Midwest Senator Marokai Blue.

Since when are regional SEnators replaced by Special Elections?

Since the Senate Vacancy Regional Flexibility Amendment, they are in the Pacific. I'm not sure if they are anywhere else.

If you can show me a law that states that the Midwest has some special procedure for regional senate vacancies, I'll gladly cancel that specific election. I've been looking for a while now and I can't find one. No one from the Midwest seems to be particularly active or interested in filling that vacancy in any case.

I thought it better to have a special election scheduled for that seat which can be disregarded if it turns out that it was not the proper procedure.

My concern was the assumption that they had such a law. Perhaps you should contact their Prime Verin, or whatever he his called these days. If there isn't a special election procedure, he can just appoint some poor unfortunate sap to enter my chop shop. Eight is better than seven, anyday.

From what I remember, the Governor appoints someone to the seat unless the region has specified otherwise.

For at-large seats, if there are less than six weeks left in the term, then the party may appoint a replacement.

Frankly, your standard is a bit ridiculous. :P If a law exists, somebody had to pass it. Hawkeye has been Prime Verin for ages and thus if it passed since the relevant Constitutional Amendment allowing such was passed, then it would have had to pass through his glance at some point.  The Constitutional Amendment was passed only last year if I believe and therefore there isn't a very long window for such a change in regional polices to have been enacted.

Maybe you just want to hold a special election regardless of whether it is necessary or not, hmm? :P

The June regular election? It's still two and a half months away, so there aren't.

Oh.  I was under the impression that there was an April election.  Carry on.

As per the OSPR, I am to alert you of this event so as to take measures to procure a replacement (basically you get to contact the Governor of the Mideast :P).

So what happened with the vote miscount? Is it possible that I won?

Unfortunately wormyguy found one of your voters didn't meet activity requirements so you still lost by less than one vote. However, we know this election was a fluke and come August we could see 1 or 2 of these guys defeated. Since you came so close this time, you should prepare for another run.

The 50% turnout sucks, but at least some olds came out and voted.

In light of the vote count débacle, I would like to announce that I will not resign. It seems that enough people have confidence in my ability to run an election that such a move would be misguided at best and catastrophic at worst.

However, I will make a few changes to the way I count elections so that this regrettable incident need not ever happen again:

1. I will post the election ballot a full 24 hours in advance of the start of the election.
2. I will post a status report of all the ballots as the election progresses, in which I will state whether a vote is confirmed to be valid or invalid.
3. I will post an unofficial results report immediately after the polls close and leave it there for public review for an additional 24 hours before certifying the results.
4. I will settle all election-related grievances before declaring any candidate to be elected.

As always, please let me know if there's something more I can do to rebuild your confidence in my office.

However, it has been an unconstitutionally long time since an election was held - repeatedly, in fact, for several months.  The Prime Verinship has likely gone vacant multiple times and we haven't noticed.  Like I've said, I'm weighing whether I want to try to fix this or if there's anything I feel like I can do on the national level still, but right now I'm leaning towards the Midwest.  I'd suggest anyone who's interested in a Senate seat should move to the Midwest and declare their candidacy.  Multiple people showing up will lead to a competitive race, which would only be a good thing.  If I change my mind, then I look forward to trouncing you an honest debate of principles ;)

I'd rather not. Some may not know what that abbreviation means. I would prefer to keep labels and names on ballots as clear and easily comprehensible as is possible.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows by now, and writing out Imperial Dominion of the South should make it clear.  But it's your call, chief :)

A Statement from the SoFE

Please be informed that for all of Saturday and much of Friday and Sunday I will have no access whatsoever to the Internet. I anticipate being available until mid-afternoon tomorrow, and for the last several hours of Sunday night and evening. For this reason, my counting of the votes will not be as continuous as I normally would like. I can assure you, however, that I will be present in two hours' time to open the polls and on Sunday night to close them, and that the quality and accuracy of my count of the votes will not in any way be hindered by my absence.
