Title: The RT Movie Game Rises (Hiatus)
Post by: Eraserhead on March 02, 2012, 05:03:03 AM
I figured that with many major films on the way, I'd bring this back. Let's start fresh though so we can hopefully attract some new players. Firstly, let's acknowledge that BRTD (9 points) came out on top the last time we did this with benconstine (7 points) in a strong second. *Round of applause.*

Here are the rules:

Quote
So basically it will work like this, I'll post a new movie or group of movies every week and whoever comes closest to guessing the percentage (%) score will get a point. I'll award points (approximately) seven days after the release of the movie since their scores are unlikely to change much after that point. Also you will only be able to make or edit predictions that count towards the game at least seven days before the release of a movie. I'll edit this first post with movies and other information as needed. If you don't care about the point system but just want to use this thread to randomly guess or even just talk about movie scores, that's fine too. I'll also be using this thread to occasionally post box office related news.

Chernobyl Diaries (Predictions due May 18th)

Men In Black 3 (Predictions due May 18th)

Moonrise Kingdom (Predictions due May 18th)

Snow White and the Huntsman (Predictions due May 25th)

Piranha 3DD (Predictions due May 25th)

Rowdy Rathore (Predictions due May 25th)

Official Scoreboard:

Eraserhead: 5
BRTD: 2
Holmes: 2
King: 2
benconstine: 1

Hunger Games 47%

Also, I'd like to note that Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar movie opens in theaters today!

Also, I'd like to note that Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar movie opens in theaters today!

And currently sitting at 42% on RT. Considering how few people actually get Tim & Eric, that really isn't too bad. Also it's just kind of awesome that Roger Ebert had to sit through something Tim & Eric did.

Apparently the book is a really big deal, but the trailer makes it look kind of stupid... I'll say 59%.

I'll give it a fresh 71%, but the average rating to be around 6

I read some of the reviews. A lot of them were hilarious. I'm stoked to see it in theaters tonight!

Hunger Games - I'll give it a 61%. For some reason I expect it to be similar to the Phantom Menace.

I'm sure it'll end up dropping quite a bit (early reviews tend to be more favorable) but wow... I guess this isn't the next Twilight in terms of quality. I may have to actually check this out now.

I'm interested in it now, though I won't see it till it hits the second run theater at least, no way I'm seeing any movie in a theater likely full of squealing teenage girls. It'll probably be the best movie in theaters next weekend though, I just noticed all top 10 are certified rotten this week (though The Lorax and Safe House are both above 50%).

Reviews for this are trickling in very slowly atm. Still at 100% with 16 though. It also has an excellent 8.3 average rating (for now).

Title: Re: The Rotten Tomatoes Movie Score Game Rises (New movies added 3/21)!

New movies have been added.

My guesses:

Wrath of the Titans 22%

Mirror Mirror 26%

In other news, reviews for The Hunger Games are pouring in now and it's still at 91%!

There is a lot of speculation about it possibly having one of the biggest opening weekends ever too. A 120+ million opening weekend would be insane for a non-sequel but it seems like a possibility.

That would make it the highest opening weekend ever for a non-sequel. The current record holder is the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland at $116 million.

Post by: I spent the winter writing songs about getting better on March 21, 2012, 11:13:15 PM
This also means The Hunger Games is set to be the widest independent release of all time. I know some people think it's a joke to call Lionsgate an indie studio, but it's worth noting they've had only two films ever top $100 million (Fahrenheit 9/11 and The Expendables), and outside of those two their top grossing non-Tyler Perry or Saw film is The Lincoln Lawyer with only $58 million. So The Hunger Games could become the highest grossing Lionsgate release ever in only its first weekend.

Still not seeing it till it hits the cheap theater due to the crowd the marketing will attract.

Indeed. Plus in that case it was an adaptation of a story everyone and their grandmother had known about forever. It also had Johnny Depp as its star.

Lowballing it. I really doubt either of these movies will have any redeemable quality, and as someone who saw the last "Titans," it's only downhill from there.

This is noteworthy:

Quote
While a majority of the audience for The Hunger Games were women (61 percent), the fact that it did have some appeal to men as well surely helped it get as high as it did. In comparison, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1's crowd was 80 percent female. The Hunger Games audience also skewed slightly older (56 percent were 25 years of age and up), and they awarded the movie a strong "A" CinemaScore.

Definitely brought in a lot more than the expected target demographic there.

Time for more points to be awarded.

Now for Wrath of the Titans, just about everyone came very close but I'm giving points to BRTD and myself because we both guessed 22% and the actual score was 23%.

For Mirror Mirror, Holmes gets his second point for pretty much nailing it with a guess of 51%. The actual was 49%.

Shout out to Snowstalker for coming painfully close on both but getting narrowly edged out on both this time.

Also, I added a new movie for us to predict.

Also, I'm a little late on this but the domestic box office wasn't too interesting last week. The Hunger Games had a decently big (although not really unexpected) drop but still lead easily thanks to Wrath having a much weaker debut than its predecessor and Mirror Mirror basically flopping.

http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3406&p=.htm

Mirror Mirror is a kids movie though so maybe it'll have decent legs.

Time for new points to be awarded:

Cabin In The Woods

Actual score: 92%

Closest guess: Eraserhead with 86% (Holmes guessed 86% as well but missed the due date.)

Lockout

Actual score: 34%

Closest guess: benconstine with 36%

The Three Stooges

Actual score: 46%

Closest guess: Eraserhead with 48%

So two points for me and one point for ben will be added to the board on the the first post.

The box office was pretty boring last weekend. The Hunger Games managed to stay on top for a fourth weekend in a row thanks to another nice drop and more lackluster competition.

King grabs another point for himself. The Raven stands at 21% on RT. King came closest with a guess of 25%.

The box office has been extremely boring and not really worth talking about but that'll change this weekend with The Avengers. It's already off to a pretty big start from the midnight showings and it has been making a ton of money overseas too.

The Dictator 44%

I wasn't into the trailers and the joke seemed kind of played out, just an attempt to cash in on that trend with the fall of Gaddafi.

Any more for Battleship/What to Expect When You're Expecting?

I'll extend the deadline through Saturday because I didn't get much participation in this round.

I get the point for The Avengers. I guessed 88% and the actual is 93%. BRTD gets the point for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. He nailed the actual score with his 75% prediction.

New movies shall be added to the first post.

The Avengers has a monster second weekend, the first ever to be 100+ million. This thing might end up beating Titanic's gross at this rate. Dark Shadows basically tanked in its wake.

Hmm, this is the last day to predict the May 25th releases. I might just put this back on hiatus soon if I don't start getting more responses. Participation has really dropped off in the last few rounds.

Might be time to return to an informal rotten tomatoes chat.

Looks like Avengers gets another #1 weekend. I'm expecting Battleship to drop like a rock next weekend too.

Yeah, I'm gonna open a thread for informal box office/rotten tomatoes chat. The game seems to have died out. I'm officially putting it on hiatus. Maybe I'll reopen it later for TDKR at least.
