Post by: All Along The Watchtower on April 09, 2012, 01:17:25 AM
Found this: http://www.selectsmart.com/RELIGION/ (http://www.selectsmart.com/RELIGION/) 20 questions, but it took longer than I expected.

My results:

   1.    Liberal Quakers - Religious Society of Friends   (100%)
        2.    Unitarian Universalism   (97%)
   3.    Orthodox Quaker - Religious Society of Friends   (86%)
   4.    Theravada Buddhism   (85%)
   5.    Taoism   (84%)
   6.    Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants   (84%)
   7.    Mahayana Buddhism   (81%)
   8.     Jainism   (80%)
   9.     Hinduism   (76%)
   10.    Secular Humanism   (75%)
   11.    Sikhism   (71%)
   12.    Reform Judaism   (68%)
   13.    New Thought   (68%)
   14.    Christian Science Church of Christ, Scientist   (59%)

   17.    Seventh Day Adventist   (56%)
        18.    Scientology   (56%)

   26.    Orthodox Judaism   (31%)
   27.    Jehovah"s Witness   (13%)

I must say, I was surprised at some of these results. Scientology higher than Roman Catholic? :P I guess the top results aren't surprising though.

I have less than a 10% match with most of the major branches of the Abrahamic religion. Funny how I do a bit better with Mormons.

   3.    Non-theist   (74%)

My actual top results are right, but a few other things show this test is crap. I'm more compatible with Scientology than Hinduism? Frankly I'd probably rather be a Hindu than any number of things I'm supposedly more compatible with here, even if it meant I couldn't eat beef anymore.

I got the same results. Agree with the fact that the test falls apart at times and I'd pick Hinduism over Scientology (and other faiths too)

Surprising results for me actually.  Interesting to note that the religion I was raised as (Roman Catholic) is thirteenth on the list, even after LDS, a church which I have previously thought I had very little in common with.

a lot of the questions didn't have any answer that I liked. For example, calling God either corporeal or incorporeal is problematic in Christianity.  One answer to a question I thought was pretty good: "Wrongdoing occurs because God gave us free will plus a weak side, or a drive to satisfy personal needs, which sometimes results in wrongful choices."

Yeah, I think that was thrown in though just to distinguish from Mormons who clearly believe in God being corporeal, Jehovah's Witnesses too I think.

I also liked that (and chose it).

I know. Everything else in the top six or seven made sense to me but I thought Mahayana should have been higher and I'm really not terribly well-versed in Adventist thought.

I was pretty liberal with the "None of the above" option, as a lot of these weren't worded exactly right for me, so I imagine that's probably why a lot of these fall into the 30-50% range. I find it interesting that an Evangelical Christianity option isn't on here (unless it's under "Mainline - Conservative Christian Protestants," which would be semantically incorrect).

Yeah that really bugged me and is stupid wording. They obviously were trying to avoid oversimplifying ala mainline = liberal, evangelical = conservative, but simplified just as much in an even stupider way.

Result: Puritan. You adhere to the reformed theologies that stemmed from John Calvin in the sixteenth century. The idea of predestination is central to your beliefs. You believe that not only is salvation predestined by God, this election is unconditional, and cannot be either resisted or lost. As opposed to the Arminian belief in free will, Calvinists stress that men are born as sinners (total depravity), and that they do not have the ability to turn from sin by themselves (sovereign grace). As far as church organisation is concerned, you believe in a less centralised system than your mainstream Calvinist counterparts, although historically some Puritans did support a Presbyterian polity. However, Puritans stress the importance of religious freedom, with notable Purtans such as Oliver Cromwell being tolerant even to polygamist groups such as Anabaptists.

Result: Episcopalian. As an episcopalian, you support the espicopal system and the associated church hierarchy. You believe that positions such as those of Priest and Bishop are necessary within a church, and help keep the flock on a righteous path. Despite being a Protestant denomination, in many ways your views are likely to be more in line with those of the Papacy than any of the Lutheran or reformed churches. The best known espicopal church is the Church of England, or the Anglican Church. It sees itself as being "via media", or inbetween Protestanism and Catholicism. Episcoplians are widely spread throughout the world, but of course the episcopal heartland remains in England.

Result: Catholic

As a Catholic, you believe in the idea of a universal church, with the Pope at its head. You believe a strong hierarchy is necessary to keep order within the church, from the priests and bishops up to the Pope himself. Your theological views are likely to be very much conservative and based on tradition. Catholics believe in seven sacraments, and that the holy communion is the literal blood and body of Christ. In addition to this, they do not accept the Lutheran view of salvation through faith alone, or Calvinist views on predestination; but instead believe that good works are an essentital part of securing a place in Heaven. As a Catholic, you are likely to share many views with Episcopalians, and to an extent perhaps also Lutherans, but otherwise your hierarchy and theological beliefs distance you from the post-reformation churches.

2. Episcopalian
3. Methodist
4. Restorationist
5. Puritan
6. Calvinist

Sounds about right.  I have been drifting toward Catholicism for some time now.

I got, Liberal Mainline Protestant, and I feel it's pretty accurate.

Also sometimes referred to as secular, modern, progressive, or humanistic Christian. This is an umbrella term for Protestant denominations, or churches within denominations, that view the Bible as the witness of God rather than the word of God, to be interpreted in its historical context through critical analysis. Examples include some churches within Anglican/Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Unitarian, United Church of Christ. There are more than 2,000 Protestant denominations offering a wide range of beliefs from extremely liberal to mainline to ultra conservative and those that include characteristics on both ends.

Belief in Deity: Trinity of the Father (God), the Son (Christ), and the Holy Spirit that comprises one God Almighty. Many believe God is incorporeal.

Incarnations: Beliefs vary from the literal to the symbolic belief in Jesus Christ as God's incarnation. Some believe we are all sons and daughters of God and that Christ was exemplary, but not God.

Origin of universe and life: The Bible's account is symbolic. God created and controls the processes that account for the universe and life (e.g. evolution), as continually revealed by modern science.

After death: Goodness will somehow be rewarded and evil punished after death, but what is most important is how you show your faith and conduct your life on earth.

Why evil? Most do not believe that humanity inherited original sin from Adam and Eve or that Satan actually exists. Most believe that God is good and made people inherently good, but also with free will and imperfect nature which leads some to immoral behavior.

Salvation: Various beliefs: Some believe all will go to heaven as God is loving and forgiving. Others believe salvation lies in doing good works and no harm to others, regardless of faith. Some believe baptism is important. Some believe the concept of salvation after death is symbolic, or nonexistent.

Undeserving Suffering: Most Liberal Christians do not believe that Satan causes suffering. Some believe suffering is part of God's plan, will, or design even if we don't immediately understand it. Some don't believe in any spiritual reasons for suffering, and most take a humanistic approach to helping those in need.

Contemporary Issues: Most churches teach that abortion is morally wrong, but many ultimately support a woman's right to choose, usually accompanied by policies to provide counseling on alternatives. Many are accepting of homosexuality and gay rights.

Your Result: Methodist

As a Methodist, your views can be traced back to John Wesley and his revival movement within the Church of England. Methodist beliefs are broadly speaking similar to those of the mainstream reformed churches, however Methodists have a tradition of enjoying more better relations with episcopalian churces. After all, John Wesley himself remained a committed Anglican clergyman. Methodists mainly embrace the writing of Arminius, believing that while faith is central to salvation, that salvation can be lost through rejecting God. One of the biggest theological differences between Methodists and other reformed faiths is the Methodist belief in free will, and that men choose to sin, rather than being born as its slaves.

Hey, me and MaxQue got the same list for denomination preferences! Exact same answers?

(Like all religion tests though, there were several questions where I didn't like any of the answers.)

Your Result: Lutheran

You adhere to the theologies of Martin Luther, one of the first great figureheads of the Protestant Reformation. You believe firmly in salvation through faith alone, the issue which caused Luther to split with Rome. However, you do not accept the doctrine of predestination as it is interpreted by Calvinists, instead believing that anyone is capable of accepting God and entering Heaven. However, Lutherans do believe that all men are born sinners, and as such cannot reject sin through their own free will. Lutherans do have a broad range of views on church organisation, and while they are widely recognised as Protestants, many do not accept this grouping considering it was Luther's intention to reform the Papacy, not split from it.

(Luther actually emphasized Predestination more than Calvin did, but it's true Luther's followers are more likely to disagree with it.)

Methodist
Pentecostal
Puritan
Calvinist
Restorationist
Baptist
Episcopalian
Catholic

I expected to have Methodist first, but I'm not surprised Lutheran is on top - I think my answer of real presence in the Eucharist made the difference.
