Title: do you find it bizarre that the Milibands ran against each other?
Post by: © tweed on May 04, 2012, 06:07:35 AM
I know this is old news and has been discussed before.  but it seems so uniquely the stuff of a bad thriller novel I can't wrap my head around it.  what was the general reaction?

Yes and what's even more bizarre is the fact that I don't remember seeing much coverage of how awkward it must have been for the family. Then again, maybe they were more interested in covering substantive policy differences (Ha! I kid...) and maybe it somehow wasn't awkward for the family.

Still better than having identical twins serving as President and Prime Minister at the same time.

The Dupont & Dupond of politics.

In the 2011 French socialist primaries Segolene Royal was defeated by her former domestic partner (and father of her four children) Francois Hollande.

Hans-Jochen Vogel is a former SPD chairman and chancellor-candidate, while his younger brother Bernhard Vogel is a CDU politician who served as prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and later Thuringia. (Unfortunately, they never ran against each other in an election.)

Currently holding two of Sao Paulo state's Senate seats are the former couple Eduardo Suplicy and Marta Suplicy.  It's a shame they're no longer married.

Beyond weird.

Interesting that Ed Balls (who ran and came 3rd) and Yvette Cooper (his wife) agreed not to run against each other and only gave each other one shot at the leadership. Clearly not taking the Miliband route or even the Hollande-Royal route.

This is probably too local for anyone to care, but in East King County, a Republican candidate for county council (David Irons) ended up being challenged in the general election by his sister, who ran as a write-in. Their mother claimed David hit her. She actually got 35-40% as a write-in, IIRC, but he ultimately won. The family drama tends to come up every time he's running for office.

Sammamish, WA actually had somewhat interesting politics in the 1990s for an otherwise a boring suburb.

When asked what would be her problem, in 2007, Montebourg answered 'her husband' or something like this.

She traded the Bob Dylan fanboy granddad for a younger Argentinian ladiesman. Nice attack on a machista society. Good move for a feminist shrink specialized on women sexuality. One can imagine how Brazilian conservatives are fond of her.
The only bad thing about them are their issues.
