Title: Alternate 1995 French presidential election
Post by: MASHED POTATOES. VOTE! on May 21, 2012, 05:24:02 AM
1. Balladur keeps his initial word and declines to run, loyally supporting Chirac candidacy
2. Despite Mitterrand's enemity, Michel Rocard, his internal rival and the most popular PS politician, is nominated as a candidate instead of Jospin
3. Giscard d'Estaing, who doesn't know where to quit, is running again as UDF candidate (which he seriously considered in RL)

With Rocard running, I don't rule out Mitterrand sponsoring another left-wing to run against Rocard. Maybe an outsider, like Kouchner. Tapie would be a lot controversial. I can see a stronger bid by de Villiers, appealing to FN kinds, some anti-establishment right wingers who dislike older names and even eurosceptic orphans of PS. Chirac would be favourite but real fight would be for a place in run-off.
