v0031, where do these questions come from anyway?  No one talks like this or does these things.
The stories seem what people think 1950's America was like.

The first question is impossible to answer.  I'd guess that the answer they want is either C or D.  However, if the family lived in a dangerous neighborhood and it was late at night then they would probably feel A , B or C.

I think the second part is testing your Geography and not your English.  I think the test assumes that a Frenchmen does not understand English.

29. C - A knock on the door would've been a shock, however small, unless they were expecting it. Bob clearly wasn't happy at the time - he was lonely.
34. D - Didn't see any point in reading a menu written in a language he couldn't understand, so instead tried to verbally/pictorially communicate it.

The first question: there would certainly be some element of surprise; they may also be happy that people are there and so they are less lonely.

Second: D, for reasons previously stated.

These are from my students' homework. Before I gave them the class, I should do the homework too.
When I am puzzled, I come to this powerful site to seek help, few not solved.
