Title: Teddy Roosevelt elected POTUS in 1912
Post by: The CINC on June 14, 2012, 11:47:51 PM
What if Teddy Roosevelt we re-elected POTUS in 1912 as a candidate of the Bull Moose Party? How would have history progressed since then?

The Bull Moose Party would be a split between the moderate GOP and the Tories. There Tories would have eventually regained the WH, but they, the Whigs or Bull Mooses would be a factor well into even today's politics.

Let me spell it out Whigs=moderate wing of the GOP party and Tories the Traditional or Conservative wing of the GOP party. Traditional wing Nixon, Goldwater and Traft. Moderate wing Teddy Roosevelt, Charles E Hughs and Eisenhower, the Bull Mooses.

I'm not sure about Hughes being a moderate, though very little is said about his political positions prior to the new deal.  I also think Nixon is more of a progressive while Ike is a semi-conservative.  Remember Nixon created the EPA, talked with Ted Kennedy about a public option, and was a firm advocate of wage and price controls, in addition to cutting America off from what was left of the Gold Standard

I recall my history book referring to Hughes as a liberal. Then again, it's not the best source for finding out people's political ideologies.

Also, from Wikipedia it mentions his strengthening & centralizing the NY State Government.

And it also says on Wikipedia that the Bull Mooses almost put Hughes as their nominee in 1916 but failed. The moderate GOP,were imputed on the SCrt and were strong advocates in the likes of Harlen Fisk Stone, in overturning segregation and implimentation of New Deal laws.

Though Hughes led the battle against the New Deal; SCOTUS was the only branch of government FDR didn't have under complete New Deal Domination (though he would eventually appoint 8 justices to the Supreme Court)
