Title: Jerry Sandusky convicted on 45 of 48 counts

(CBS/AP) A jury has found Jerry Sandusky guilty on 45 of 48 counts in his child sex abuse trial, believing prosecutors' portrayal of him as a serial molester who groomed his victims and not finding reasonable doubt in his defense lawyer's assertions that the former Penn State assistant football coach was being victimized by an overzealous prosecution and greedy accusers.

Moved this from the Constitution and Law board for a probable merge with the other topic that was a couple of minutes older.  I doubt there will be any discussion of the desirability of the laws he was charged under.

NCAA hit Penn State with huge sanctions (http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/dennis-dodd/19637974/penn-state-hit-with-crippling-penalties)

They didn't give them the "death penalty", but it will certainly seem like it.  Penn State football is dead for the next decade at a minimum.  The worst part is (not that I'm against the penalties) is that it hurts a ton of people that had nothing to do with the scandal.  Obviously the players at Penn State (but they will have an "out"), but also every team on Penn State's schedule and especially the other Big Ten schools.

Vacating Paterno's wins is going way too far. He went to the school board about it but the school board did nothing. Change the school board. Don't punish the kids for the actions of their coaches. The kids who want to play for Penn State are as innocent as the kids Sandusky hurt.

Penn State deserves everything that comes to them. They're lucky they didn't get the NCAA's death penalty.

This.  Apparently 14 years of allowing child rape to keep happening is 8 times as bad as giving Reggie Bush $100 handshakes, according to the NCAA.  Penn State got off light.

The school board did nothing in large part because Paterno was pushing to have this swept under the rug.  Of the players involved in the cover up Paterno had the most influence and it's clear from the emails that came out last month that he is the most guilty.

Still wasn't expecting the punishment to be this harsh, but maybe this is for the best in the long run.

That's not what I heard. Paterno didn't want it swept under the rug. He wanted it confronted. I'm not a Penn State fan (I'm an Indiana and Boise State fan). Plus Louis Freeh has been involved in some rather shady stuff covering up for Clinton's shenanigans.

To be honest, this is actually worse than the death penalty.

Then you heard a crazy conspiracy theory rather than the facts. It sucks that Paterno turned out to be an amoral creep, but it is what it is.

Paternos seek appeal. NCAA says they can't. NCAA bylaws say they can

And it was rejected, within 48 hours.  There was a lack of standing.

Paterno was not "named" in the consent decree.  His name was mentioned, as was Freeh's, but he wasn't actually penalized.

Actually, the Freeh report was quite damning.  At the very least, Paterno, presuming he was not senile, at the very least acquiesced  to the coverup, in 2001.

His name was mentioned thus his family has standing. Also the Penn State trustees have issued an appeal as well.

He has no standing because he wasn't penalized.

And there will be no appeal.......fuggetaboutit.

Well, to have standing in an appeal, you have to be a party to the decision.
For the NCAA, I assume than the two parties are the NCAA and Penn State.

At best, they can try to sue the NCAA for libelling them in their decision.

Why do you defend a man who spent 13 years enabling a child molester?

You call being stripped of multiple seasons of victories not a penalty? That's a penalty on Paterno personally thus his family has standing to appeal.

Paterno wasn't an enabler, the trustees who were in power at the time were. Paterno tried to confront the issue while the trustees wanted to cover it up.

Again, why do you continue to believe that?  It's completely contrary to what the Freeh Report said.

Even if what you say were true, Paterno was still an enabler who did the bare minimum to avoid criminal liability. And when dealing with child rape, doing the bare minimum is disgusting.

Technically, Penn State was stripped of the victories.

Neither incident was ever reported to the trustees.
