Title: Make a map of the above four posters as two tickets
Post by: Yelnoc on July 03, 2012, 11:48:57 AM
Rules
1. The previous four people who posted maps are to be considered (ignore this for the OP and next three posters)
2. Pair those four to create as logical a ticket as possible.
3. Post a map of the results.
4. Provide a description.

We will need three "I'm interested" posts and then the fourth guy can make our first map.

Yelnoc runs as a centrist Demcorat and chooses the more liberal Jones for a ticket appeals to all factions of his party. Tmthforu is likewise a relatively moderate and picks SupersonicVenue. In teh general election, Yelnoc's home state of Georgia is key for him; from there, he has a base to campaign from in nearby NC, VA, and FL. He wins all three of those states on election night. Tmthforu/Venue do well in the midwest; they win swingy Wisconsin and Iowa by decent margins, they take Ohio by 4 points and even pull off a win in PA. The Republican ticket makes inroads out west as well, taking Colorado back. Overall, the Demcorats' strength in the southern Atlantic region is hard for the GOP to overcome.

Yelnoc/Jones (D)- 50.3%
Tmthforu/Venue (R)- 48.6%

Jones wins the dem. nomination after an easy primary against Miles and decides to choose him as his VP. Tmth gets the nomination against the more conservative Keystone Phil and chooses mainstream republican SuperSonicVenue of NH as his running mate, in order to appeal to the conservative base and in states like NH and PA. Polls show a tight race, with Jones having a slim lead in GA, VA and NC (because of Miles popularity in the South) but Tmth ahead in the rust belt. PA, SC, LA, IA, MI, FL and CO are the closest states (SC being the closest).

Centrist Tmth chooses a Democrat and friend to unite the country against the quite liberal ticket of Juilo and Alfred. With Tmth and Miles running as Centrist semi-Populists, they are able to win wide swaths of the electorate. However, they fail to do well in the North-East and South-West, just barely taking Arizona.

Tmthforu94 (R-IN)/MilesC56 (D-LA) 318 electoral votes

Centrist Democrat Miles picks also-centrist fezzyfestoon as his VP, while establishment Republican Shua holds down a 20RP12 insurgency and takes him on as a compromise pick. Shua benefits from depressed progressive turnout and libertarian leanings in some areas, but the Democrats appeal more to the center and win the day.

Moderate republican Shua, after a close primary against 2012RP and a teabagger, chooses 2012RP because he'd run as an independent if he wasn't given the VP position. Tea Party leaders reluctantly endorse him, but the ultraconservative base isn't too fond of him, and a majority of them stay at home on Election Day.
Alfred Jones, after an easier primary, decides to choose fellow Pennsylvania senator and close FezzyFestoon as his running mate. Conservadems in the south hate the ticket (a la Joe Manchin) and polls indicate that they're supporting Shua.
The campaign is really close, but manages to seem independent-minded, specially after the criticism he receives from TP leaders (independents think "hey, if the tea party doesn't like him it may be because he's a moderate guy).
Pennsylvania is the state to watch. The governor is GOP VP candidate and their senior (and favourite) senator is running as the dem VP.
Shua comfortably wins the election, but fails to carry PA:

Shua (R-VA)-20RP12 (R-PA) : 286
Alfred F Jones (D-NY)-JulioMadrid (D-NV) : 252

Alfred, Senator from New York, comfortably wins the Democratic nomination for President capitalizing on liberal discontent with the direction of the party. Promising a 'new age for America' at the Democratic Conference in Seattle, Washington, the grassroots is extremely enthusiastic. In an attempt to push Hispanics away from the GOP and to aid the Democrats in the southwest, he picks popular Nevada Governor Julio. Virginia Governor, Shua, struggles to win the GOP nomination and is forced to move to the right to counter the insurgency from 20RP12. As a 'gift', Congressman 20RP12, is offered the vice-presidency slot on the ticket.  Senator Alfred and Governor Julio perform very well in the southwest, as expected, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada all go red and Arizona is unexpectedly close. Nevertheless, Shua and 20RP12 storm the midwest. Wisconsin votes GOP for the first time since 1988, libertarian New Hampshire enthusiastically votes for the Republicans and Pennsylvania almost goes the GOP way. A 'bog-standard' Republican victory.

20RP12 triangulates from his libertarian roots during the primaries to get the Republican nomination.  In order to appease the base, he picks little-known Supersonic.  The move excites said base, but costs 20RP12 the support of moderates and a number of independents.

Fortunately for him, that lost support stays home rather than supporting his Democratic opponent.  JulioMadrid rides a wave of anti-establishment, anti-right wing backlash and becomes another successful dark horse Democratic nominee.  He picks Alfred, a freshman politician of more orthodox views in hopes of shoring up the blue dog base, but the geographically unbalanced ticket does nothing to help him and "mainstream" media easily paints Julio as an "out-of-touch liberal elitist."

Turnout on election day is near historic lows.  In the end, the Democrats pull of a victory, but a very narrow one; a number of their key victories are merely a percentage point away from flipping.

Democrats don't run a candidate, as Obama becomes the most unpopular president of the US History after his 2nd term (9/89 approvals), because of millions of scandals (he's Herman Cain 2.0) and the 16% unemployment. The crisis is still here in 2016, and worsened. Republicans aren't beloved by the people, either, so an independent movement surges, with Occupy, numerous independents and Libertarians gaining senate and house seats(and even the governorship of GA with Yelnoc) all around America in 2014.
Governor Yelnoc decides to run as an independent. Libertarians, who are polling 15% with a generic candidate, decide they'll give their support to the governor if he chooses a Libertarian VP. Senator JBrase from TX is the chosen one, in order to appeal to the Republican South.
SuperSonicVenue, senator from NC, easily wins the primaries, and decides to have PA governor 20RP12 as his VP nominee, because he can "steal" some Libertarian votes from Yelnoc.

Yelnoc wins the election easily, with the support of the left (the ones who used to vote demcorat), a majority of the now-powerful Libertarians and a majority of independents. SuperSonic underperforms polls, as polls indicate Yelnoc will win anyway and some traditional republicans refusing to vote for 20RP12, as they don't consider him a real republican.

20RP12(R-PA)-Jbrase (R-IA) : 371
Julio (D-CA)- Free Palestine (D-CA) : 143
Unpledged - 24

The Democratic Party is overtaken by the Occupy movement and in the chaos of the 2016 Convention, Julio and Free Palestine using arcane party rules manage to secure the nomination. In horror the moderate wing of the party walk out of the Convention. The Republicans in contrast are able to unite around Pennsylvania Governor 20RP12, who narrowly wins the primaries against hardcore Libertarian Jbrase. As an act of party unity, 20RP12 announce Jbrase as his running mate. However southern evangelicals disgusted at this socially moderate ticket announce that an independent 'unpledged' slate of Republican electors shall be on the ballot in Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina. The GOP dominate the polling up to the election and are expected to break 400 electoral votes, however in the last week, party loyalty makes some of the undecided Democrats vote for Julio. Nevertheless 20RP12 storms the election and while 'unpledged' Republican electors win in the south, they are no where near needed for a GOP electoral college majority.

Hoo boy. This one's gonna be tough.

After an easy win in the Democratic primaries, Senator Julio selects Rep. FallenMorgan as his running mate, hoping to tap into a relatively apathetic far-left bloc. However, FallenMorgan proves to be a Palinesque figure, energizing the left, but turning off independents. Moderate New York governor Averroes Nix leaves the party in disgust and attaches himself to President Supersonic's bid (Vice President Jbrase did not wish to run for reelection), and the Republican ticket sweeps the vote. In one of the most stunning upsets of Election Night, favorite son Nix narrowly manages to give the Republicans the state of New York.

After a bruising primary, the Democrats nominate Alfred F. Jones, who chooses Averroes Nix as his running mate to appeal to the centre. After the Republican nominee withdraws due to scandal, the 'main opposition' becomes Libertarian candidate 20RP12, in spite of his off-color running mate Free Palestine. A few 'libertarian' states swallow their distate to Free Palestine and narrowly vote for 20RP12, but ultimately it is a landslide.

Fmr. Senator Vosem (R-IL) - Governor 20RP12 (R-PA) : 386
Senator Alfred F. Jones (D-NY) - Activist Free Palestine (D-CA) : 152

The left wing grassroots of the Democratic Party upset at the direction of the political climate of the United States decide to support New York Senator Alfred F. Jones en-masse against the more establishment candidate, Congressman Yelnoc of Georgia. The internet support and vast organizational skills of Alfred wins him the Democratic nomination barely. The victorious New York Senator however in his desire for a 'truly liberal' ticket opts for activist Free Palestine of California, causing an uproar amongst the moderate section of the Democratic Party who simply leave the convention. In contrast, the Republican Party's fmr. Illinois Senator Vosem wins the GOP nod due to the vote splitting caused by multiple conservative candidates, infact, he narrowly avoids a brokered convention. Vosem chooses Pennsylvania Governor 20RP12 to help him amongst independents and to boost the tickets executive experience. In the end, the election is a rout. All of the swing states and 'lean' states go to the GOP, including New Jersey and Washington. The only saving grace for the Senator from New York is that due to the partisan atmosphere of recent times, most Democrats vote for the ticket, albeit begrudgingly, more stay home. Vosem storms into the White House.

This is almost a copy of the last map I did funnily enough.

In a roller coaster of a ride Democratic primary, Fallen Morgan, a far-left activist, is able to win a plurality of the vote and cajole enough delegates over to his side to take the nomination. For Vice President he picks Jake Matthews of Pennsylvania, a Republican, in a faint-hearted attempt to form an anti-war coalition and a majority. Morgan's speech at the DNC is a rallying cry for the far left but little else.

Vosem meanwhile wins the Republican primaries, despite being pro-choice. SupersonicVenue is chosen for VP to appeal to both mainstream conservatives and British Tories that might be illegally voting. The general election is general Morgan saying crazy things and the folks in the media not even knowing how to react. Vosem merely has to sit back and enjoy.
(
)
Governor Vosem (R-IL)/British Ambassador to the U.S. SupersonicVenue (R-DC) 397 electoral votes
Activist FallenMorgan (D/S-CA)/former Congressman Jake Matthews (L/D/R-PA) 141 electoral votes

IMO this is kinda optimistic for Morgan. Vosem should be able to do well with Rockefeller Republicans in the NorthEast.

Tried to decide how I was gonna do this and I came up with the lulziest idea.

Former Republican Governor of Michigan Cathcon chooses young North Carolina Republican Congressman Supersonic as his running mate to sure up the Southern base. Senator Vosem, dissatisfied with the Republican ticket, decides to run as a Democrat and somehow wins the nomination. He strikes a deal with the party to choose Palestinian Activist and Congressman FallenMorgan. After rumours emerge that Vosem and his running mate often have verbal--and sometimes even physical--spats, the campaign is nearly sunk and they go down in a 1980-esque defeat.

For some reason, the democrats don't field a ticket that year. Turnout drops dramatically, but the libertarian ticket is able to pick enough democrat voters who want to prevent a republican victory and also to take the libertarian wing of the GOP itself. The election is one of the closest in American history, with the bellwether States being Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wyoming, Arizona and Idaho.

Governor Antonio of New York easily wins the Democratic primaries due to a fractured center. To appease moderate voters turned off by his solid left-wing views, he chooses Senator Vosem of Illinois, who abandoned the Republican party the previous year due to it drifting to the fringe on social issues.
Meanwhile, the insurgent campaign of Representative 20RP12 runs slightly behind the more establishment Cathcon the entire primary season, but not far enough to avoid a brokered convention. About thirty delegates who were pledged to Cathcon switch to 20RP12 on the second ballot, giving him the nomination, whereupon he picks Cathcon for VP to try to hold the party together.
20RP12 runs up the totals across the Mountain West, but does not do so well in the South. The Antonio/Vosem ticket wins in a near-landslide in November.

Antonio (D - NY) / Vosem (I - IL) - 386 EV, 52% PV
20RP12 (R - PA) / Cathcon (R - MI) - 152 EV, 47% PV

On the Democratic side, Governor Antonio V clinched the nomination. Many expected him to chose a moderate to contrast his liberal ideology, but instead, he chose Senator A Person of New Jersey.

However, as soon as he was slated to be the Republican nominee, he faced the challenge of picking up Independents and disgruntled Democrats that were unsatisfied with the performance of President Napoleon (D-CT). President Tmthforu94 decides to not run for re-election after the economy enters a double-dip recession. The GOP's 'hard hitters' shy away from the nomination, allowing libertarian Pennsylvania Governor 20RP12 to successfully win the nod for an election that most Republicans think is a lock for the Democrats. In a convention floor vote, serving Republican Vice-President Realistic Idealist of Washington is re-nominated. The GOP ticket tries to distance itself from the economic troubles by focusing on 'ending the wars' and 'bringing the troops home', however in an election dominated by domestic concerns this makes little headway. For the Democratic Party, former President Napoleon wins the nomination almost without contest after storming the Iowa Caucuses' and New Hampshire Primaries. America, unhappy with the choice they made four years earlier decides to re-elect Napoleon and Fallen Morgan to the Presidency, however voter turnout is rather low given the apparent 'stale' choices on both tickets.

The impact of the nomination by the GOP of socially moderate Supersonic and outright libertarian Jake as his running mate is nullified by the presence of centrist democrat Napoleon on the democrat size. With the conservative victory in the republican primary, the Governor chooses Jake Mattews, a vocal libertarian to balance the ticket which flips New Hampshire and the Southwest into battleground states. Meanwhile Senator Antonio picks a liberal from the opposite side of the country, enjoying great turnout from the party, but failing to win over key independent groups despite an early lead in the campaign.

Governor A-Bob wins the Republican primary and chooses Senator Supersonic as his running mate.  While the Democrats face severe internal divisions that prevent them from putting forward a strong candidate, Congressman Jake Mathews decides to run as an independent. To attract the left, he asks Senator Antonio to run with him. The independent ticket is strong among urban areas, ethnic communities, anti-war and libertarian voters, and many liberals and moderates. The Republicans hold onto their socially conservative base and make appeals to national security among swing state suburbans.  A close election means voters must wait until the results come in from closely contested Alaska to know who has won the electoral college.

Senator Antonio (D-ME)/Governor Averroës Nix (D-NY) - 257 - 49.2%
Senator Shua (R-VA)/Former Governor A-Bob (R-CO) - 281 - 50.8%

Senator Antonio wins the Democratic nomination and selects Governor Nix to provide executive and economic experience to the ticket. Senator Shua wins the Republican side and selects former Governor A-Bob to reinforce his conservative credentials with distrustful parts of the base. While Antonio runs a very liberal campaign, his populist rhetoric jibes well with the Rustbelt. However, the Shua/A-Bob ticket is able to hold onto Ohio by a hair and convince Independents that Antonio would be to extreme.

Gov. Averroes Nix (D-NY)/Sen. Nagas (D-VA) - 270 EVs
Sen. A-Bob (R-CO)/Rep. shua (R-VA) - 268 EVs

The liberal, but moderate Governor of New York, Averroes Nix wins the Democratic primary and selects fellow moderate, Senator Nagas of Virginia as his running mate.  On the Republican side, conservative Senator A-Bob of Colorado wins the nomination and libertarian Republican Congressman shua of Virginia becomes his running mate.  During the campaign, Nix establishes himself as a moderate, DLC-type Democrat whilst A-Bob presents himself as a severe conservative.  Seeing this, independent voters overwhelmingly flock to the Nix/Nagas campaign, but liberal turnout declines in certain battleground states.  Eventually, the race comes down to Virginia as the deciding state, which is called for Nix two days after the election.

After a brutal primary, the New York longtime boss Governor Nix rises above the fray and wins at the convention, announcing Senator Nagas as his Vice Presidential pick to appeal to moderate democrats.  Meanwhile republicans rally around Senator Shua half way through the primary after defeating the split conservatives Rep. Supersonic, Governor ZuWo and Speaker of the House Inks who spent a significant amount of campaign time attacking each other as the viable alternative to Shua.

With a much more divided left, the already moderate Senator Shua chooses long time friend Senator Scott of Connecticut in hopes of expanding the ticket’s appeal to moderate and even liberal democrats. Unfortunately for the Shua campaign, the social conservative movement opts to stay home on Election Day even though he tries to paint himself as a common sense conservative on a unifying ticket.

Election Day is surprising with a suppressed conservative turnout combined with a split democratic party.

Moderate conservative A-Bob wins republican nomination and pick libertarian Jake Matthews in order to expand his base. On the other hand, the democratic ticket is made of two similarly moderate democrats, Scott and Nagas. The election is competitive, but in the end, the democratic ticket is seen as the best choice, in particular thanks to good performances in the Midwest. The west however is enthused by the GOP ticket.

Senator Scott (D-CT) manages to win the Democratic nomination as an uncontroversial liberal.  He selects Representative Antonio V as his running-mate.  Few people pay attention to Antonio's reputation as a European-style left-wing sort, given how he's a vice presidential candidate, and nobody really pays attention to those guys.

Meanwhile, Governor 20RP12 of Pennsylvania wins the Republican nomination.  Despite being a libertarian, he manages to be charismatic enough to win enough delegates so that, after a few ballots, he gets the nomination.  As a show of non-partisan-ness he goes off on a limb and selects the independent governor of Colorado A-Bob as his running-mate, creating a kind of joint ticket.

Shua and Goldwater Republican fire up the Republican base, and for a while, lead the Scott ticket, as his pick of Alfred Jones is controversial. However, the paleoconservative'ish ticket of Shua is spun by Scott, who wins over the elderly in Florida. The Scott campaign plays on populist sentiment and performs strongly in the midwest, and is able to win over the swing states.

Senator Scott of Connecticut/Representative Jones of New York- 285 EV and 50.8% PV
Senator Shua of Virginia/Senator Sanchez of Florida- 253 EV and 48.4% PV

(

The Republicans nominate long-time Senator Shua, a moderate of Virginia. To help consolidate the base, Shua selects the more conservative Senator Sanchez as his running-mate. With both hailing from swing states, the ticket looks strong and the Republican base is united.

The Democratics nominate Senator Scott, who defeated a left-wing challenge from Governor Snowstalker in the primary. To unite the Democrats, he selects left-wing Congressman Alfred Jones as his running mate, who is aiming to be the first gay Vice President. Scott runs a shrewd campaign, focusing heavily on his opponents' home states.

The friendly, folksy Democratic ticket is victorious despite Senator Shua's "elder statesman" appeal and moderate record. Numerous gaffes by Sanchez are blamed for the ticket's loss.

Despite being highly popular amongst the Democratic base, the controversial statements made by Free Palestine over economics, and the state of Israel, drive moderates into the Republican camp. Having selected firebrand libertarian Senator Goldwater Republican, Governor Townsend of Nevada is selected to balance the ticket with a moderate. Goldwater Republican enjoys a massive advantage in fundraising, and wins by a landslide.

The Republican ticket is a successful blend of right-libertarianism and populist conservatism, very effective in the republican West and in the Deep South (Rhodie's stances on "racial issues" helped there). While the quixotic socially conservative Dem candidate is strong in the Rust Belt and makes the outer South competitive, his radical running mate is not well perceived by swing voters. Eventually, the EV count is surprisingly close despite a strong PV win.

President Shua (R-VA) - Vice-President Rhodie (R-AL) : 395
Congressman Antonio V (D-LA) - Activist Fallen Morgan (D-CA) : 143

President Shua and Vice-President Rhodie are re-nominated at the GOP Convention in St. Louis, to huge acclaim and fanfare. Unemployment had dropped to 7.4%, the economy was growing, manufacturing was at a four year high. Polls indicated President Shua's approval rating averaging at 55%. Echoing Ronald Reagan's 1984 campaign mantra, 'It's Morning in America', the President announces, to great applause, that 'America is Back!'.

Running on the 'America is Back!' platform, President Shua promises to continue the 'prosperous advance' of the nation. Using his record to make the case for re-election, the President is able to avoid other contentious issues, especially immigration, which allows the GOP to play well in areas formally believed to be beyond its reach. While Vice-President Rhodie ensures the base is enthused by touring the South and Western States.

On the Democratic side, liberal Louisiana Democratic Congressman, Antonio, wins the primaries almost unanimously. Due to the popularity of the Republican administration, most Democrats decide not to run, preferring to wait for the 2016 election. The four term Congressman faces huge difficulties in making inroads with independents and swing voters, moreover, most of the Democratic base is extremely pessimistic about their chances in November. Playing on a 'base first' tactic, he opts for Fallen Morgan to be his Vice Presidential candidate. Nevertheless, with two solid leftists on the ticket, the Democratic coalition begins to crack as DLC'ers quietly defect to President Shua's campaign. Thus allowing states such as New Jersey and Washington to become vulnerable.

On election day, the result is no surprise. Landslide territory (as called by CNN) for the GOP. The Democratic 'base first' strategy does manage to hold New York and California, thus preventing a total EV collapse.

Shua easily cruises through the Republican primary.  He selects freshmen governor 20RP12 as his running mate to provide some geographical balance to the ticket.  There is some talk that the libertarian-leaning ticket might turn off some of the traditional Republican base, but the right-wing media machine is a well-oiled beast and easily turns the narrative away from the Republican ticket and torwards the Democratic nominee.

Napoleon had a much tougher time making it through his primary, with the decision coming down to the delegate tally at the convention.  Throughout the campaign trail he endured unfound allegations and abuse from his opponents and the press, which slowly whittled down his statesmen like demeanor to the point where he would not hesitate to throw mud.  His image coming out of the convention was that of a rough, coarse, and dirty politician.  To shift the narrative away from himself Napoleon selected an unheard of congressman named Solarstorm, who unfortunately did nothing to distract the press from Napoleon.

By November the election was a foregone conclusion.  The Democratic ticket lost all of it's rust-belt base along with the non-Pacific western states which had been trending D.

Shua picks Yelnoc as part of a unity ticket.

The results are rather predictable. Though FP is still capable of taking his home state.

Close states

Arizona: 47.6%-52.0%
Ohio: 48.0%-50.9%
Pennsylvania: 47.6%-49.9%
New Hampshire: 48.8%-50.1%
Wisconsin: 48.5%-49.1%

That would be the first time Wisconsin voted for a Republican since 1984, not 1988.  Anyway, here's my map for the last four posters:

The Democrats absolutely fall apart and somehow in some manner nominate FallenMorgan as their candidate; they are generally considered irrelevant in this election. Meanwhile, Gov. However, the Republicans (not wanting to lose ballot lines and such) nominate Representative Oldiesfreak (R-MI) to serve as a placeholder. Results are as expected.

And yeah, I know it's supposed to be the last 4 on 2, but Morgan doesn't really fit with any of the other options.

You're from Michigan. And if you're a pol from MI, there's a chance you tried to appeal to rust belt type voters, and that they're part of your base, so you'd do better with them than normal.

Ooh, this one is interesting.

Senator Scott of CT wins the Democratic primary by uniting the moderate and liberal wings of the party. He picks moderate governor Clinton1996 of Virginia, and together they run on a very centrist economic platform while mostly ignoring social issues.

In the GOP, former gov Oldiesfreak1854 of Michigan defeats moderate senator Spamage from Oregon by appealing to more conservative voters. Fortunately, theere were no significant "true conservative" candidates in the race so Oldiesfreak1854 was able to position himself to the right of Spamage without moving very far to the right. Oldiesfreak picks Spamage as his running mate to unite the party and counter the Scott/Clinton ticket's moderate appeal.

The election is an interesting one, with the ideological gap between the candidates smaller than most in recent history.  Both candidates try to run on personal issues and their records in office, however neither of them have much of an advantage there either as Oldiesfreak was a successful governor and Scott is one of the most respected senators. Oldiesfreak's campaign attacks Scott on social issues fairly successfully, highlighting the one area where one of the candidates is out of step with the average American voter, but Scott's campaign counters by accusing Oldiesfreak of running a "negative" and "divisive" campaign based on social issues while his campaign is more positive and focused on economic issues that people care about more.

In the end, Oldiesfreak wins the popular vote by less than 1%, but Scott pulls out the narrowest possible electoral college victory, 270-268. Much of the difference is regional based on the home states of the candidates. The Scott/Clinton ticket does well in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic, while Oldiesfreak does well in the Rust Belt and the West. Both the Green party and the Constitution party do well, getting almost 2% of the vote each.

Close call. I think Sam would carry the traditional Republican states, while bringing in New Hampshire, Colorado, and Nevada. Nix would do well in traditional Democratic/leftist areas, but might not be able to build the coalition needed to win. Sam is like Jon Huntsman with Gary Johnsons views-he attracts independents. Nix would also attract independents, but not to the degree Sam does due to his slightly less mainstream views of left-libertarianism.

Gov. Goldwater (R-WA)/Gov. Matt from VT (R-VT) (Republican)- 377
Senator Scott (D-CT)/Congressman Averroes Nix (I-NY) (Democratic)- 161

In the Republican primaries, Gov. Goldwater (Washington) wins the nomination by uniting the moderate and libertarian wings of the party, and chooses Gov. Matt (Vermont) as his running mate to burnish his libertarian credentials while solidifying the conservative base.  On the Democratic side, Senator Scott (Connecticut) easily wins the Democratic nomination due to strong support with both liberals and moderates.  He offers the VP slot to Independent Congressman Averroes Nix (New York), who accepts.  With the Republican ticket more moderate and with some libertarian leanings, and the Democratic ticket having two more moderate Northeasterners, the race quickly becomes an exciting contest, opening up many states on both sides that would otherwise have been off-limits.  In the last few days of the campaign, however, Goldwater makes enough inroads with moderates, alongside his enthusiastic libertarian support, to pull out victories in many close states, including several swing states (NH, MI, WI, IA, and FL), thus giving him a comfortable (though not landslide) victory in the Electoral College.

In a bizarre election cycle, Michigan Gov. Oldiesfreak (R) outmaneuvers rivals Gov. Matt of Vermont and Gov. Goldwater of Washington, becoming the first black Republican to win the party's nomination. Oldiesfreak chooses as his running-mate Gov. Matt, reflecting a nasty primary campaign between himself and Gov. Goldwater, whom he attacked as an "anti-civil rights libertarian" throughout the campaign, calling him unelectable.

On the Democratic side, Sen. Nix of New York won the Democratic nomination, and then, sensing an opportunity when he saw one, selected Republican Gov. Goldwater as his running-mate. Goldwater's joining of the ticket required Sen. Nix to declare himself as an independent in order to assure his cooperation, but in the end, the Democratic Party supported Nix rather than field a candidate of their own against a conservative Michigan Governor and his conservative-leaning running-mate.

In the end, the Nix-Goldwater ticket beat Oldies-Matt in a landslide, reflecting some off the cuff marks about Southerners that bolted Dixie into the Independent/Democratic camp. With 55% of the popular vote, a solid Democratic majority in both the House and in the Senate, and 468 electoral votes to the Republicans' 70, Senator Nix became President Nix on January 20, 2017.

2020 had been a particularly divisive year for the GOP. After the field was cleared for the most part following Iowa and New Hampshire, the only two remaining were Governor "Goldy" Water of Washington and Senator Ollie S. Freake Freak of Michigan. The moderates and hawks in the GOP suffered a decisive defeat in 2016 when Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky won the GOP nomination. Paul however would go on to lose narrowly to the Democratic ticket of Hillary Clinton and Louisville Mayor Tee N. Eff. Though Hillary's administration was relatively popular at first, in 2018 Hillary resigned after being caught having an affair with a 19 year old intern. Vice President Eff was considered by many to be too far to the left by many, yet at the same time excited the leftwing base of the party.

By the 2020 primaries and caucuses Sen. Freake was the last hope of the moderate wing of the GOP. The hawks were slightly more comfortable with Water than they had been with Paul, but they on average decided to break towards Freake. Winning by a fluke in Iowa, Freake was able to win over 30% nationwide in the primaries and carried 12 states.

(
)
Blue - Gov. Water
Green - Sen. Freake

On the Democratic side everyone worried that President Eff's call for a new socialist society was going too far. To quell their concerns, President Eff decided to offer Sen. Freake to be his running mate, hoping the public would see the Democratic ticket as more appealing. Governor Water chose Congressman S.S. Venue of Tennessee for his running mate. while Dem ticket picked up steam after the convention, the anti-southern gaffes of Sen. Freake proved deadly. Over the last 22 years the Democratic party had been slowly working to retake the south, embracing changing demographics. The coastal south had been moving left since 2008 and against a lessor candidate Clinton would have possibly made a clean sweep of the southeast coastal states. TNF being from Kentucky, and his running mate being African American, there had been hopes of continuing the trend, however once the gaffes started rolling, the southerns started walking away in droves.

By election day the race was a toss up, and expected to go on into the late night. At 2:37am, CST, the race was finally called.....

Governor "Goldy" Water / Rep. S.S. Venue - 275 EV 48.2%

Senator Supersonic (R-TN)/Governor James Brase (R-TX) - 46.4%, 230 EV's
Others - 1.4%, 0 EV's

President George H.W. Bush retired after one term, just in time as the economy plundered and the GOP race got especially ugly. Texas Governor James Brase, who defeated Ann Richards in a close race, decided to run on a libertarian platform of cutting loopholes, cutting taxes, and increasing personal freedom. The frontrunner the whole time was Senator Supersonic, a neoconservative with some odd opinions that always put him a little at risk. His original challenger was Wisconsin Populist Senator TJ, but TJ's campaign shuttered down after a narrowly loss in Iowa to Mr. Brase. Congressman Oldiesfreak, a black liberal Republican from a D+8 District in Michigan, ran for the nomination and won Vermont, but ended up the race frustrated with the party and left to run as an independent for a while.

Meanwhile, Senator TNF quietly locked up the nomination. His radical views had establishment Democrats quivering, hoping that Georgia Governor Clinton1996, Connecticut Senator Scott, or Former President Snowguy716 would pick up the pace. None of them did. TNF was quietly aware he could not win without party unity, and he had the bare minimum of delegates against his wide array of challengers. He had to think bold. After long conversations with Oldiesfreak, the Senator was ready for a game changer.

TNF/Oldiesfreak was a legendary ticket. Oldiesfreak managed to win TNF states that would not budge without him: Michigan, Connecticut, and Montana. At that moment in the Democrat convention, TNF surged to a lead of 56-36 against Supersonic/Jbrase. Supersonic would continue chipping away at the Senators lead, continually chipping with good debate performances, strong fundraising numbers, and unity across the Republicans against TNF, but it was not enough. A combination of Oldiesfreak as a VP choice, the NAFTA issue, and public tire of Republicans pushed TNF to a fairly strong victory.

The election has the lowest turnout in years as the Democratic base have trouble rallying around a slate of someone to the left and to the right of the party while the Republicans are outraged that the Republican nominees are too libertarian. All 4 candidates are from states that favor the other political party that they aren't registered in, however, both Presidential nominees, ElectionsGuy and TNF, and VP nominee, Goldwater, are able to carry their home states of Wisconsin, Kentucky and Washington respectively due to their high elasticity and their favorable ratings in the states. Senator Maxwell, while popular in Oklahoma, is too polarized of a state and disapproves of TNF too much to swing in the Democrats favor. Ultimately, the libertarian Republican ticket narrowly picks up the victory over the Odd Couple Democrats.

(sorry, forgot to check electoral totals, but Polnut wins)

After the nomination of the Bourbon Democratic Cleveland in 1892, the seizure of the Democratic Party in 1896 by the far-left was a shock. Firebrand Colorado congressman and former coal miner Thomas Newport Faulkner stirred up the convention to nominate him on a platform of low tariffs, anti-imperialism, trust-busting, and support for labor unions. To placate Southern conservatives and the agrarian populists at once, he selected the soft-spoken but piously Christian Scott Sunday of North Carolina. The Republicans, meanwhile, nominated Senator Polaris Nutter of Pennsylvania, who managed to steal some of Faulkner's thunder in the general election by tapping into the progressive wing of the Republican Party while still having strong views on protectionism and imperialism, which were emphasized by his selection of Admiral Harold Goldwater of New York, who had previously been involved in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. Faulkner's radicalism led the business establishment to overlook some of Nutter's progressive stances on trusts, and combined with his sway over moderates, allowed him to prevail over Faulkner in one of the most polarizing campaigns in American history.

And to add more insult to the injury, Goldwater was snubbed in the pickings for Veep by equivalently progressive, but cool-headed Governor Nathan Bigby of Georgia who was nominated in order to get a Clinton/Gore effect.

Infuriated and wishing to really stick it to the GOP, Goldwater runs as an independent and practically parodying Robertson, picks socialist activist Luke Snowstalker of Pennsylvania as running mate

President Goldwater's controversial handling of the September 11th attacks (and subsequent and seemingly unrelated decision to take the nation to war in North Korea) has proven to be extremely divisive, setting the stage for a polarizing presidential election.

Goldwater, a noted social liberal, has further enraged his own base in saying that he "frankly didn't give a damn," about the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the state of Connecticut to require full legal equality in marriage rights for same-sex couples, and of his refusal to sign off on a late term abortion ban passed by his own Republican Congress. He has attempted to cement his brand of 'Republitarianism' by selecting a fellow libertarian Republican, Governor Bigby of Georgia, as his running-mate this cycle.

Attempting to capitalize upon this, the Democrats have selected their most conservative presidential nominee in recent memory, California Governor MormDem. A social conservative that has proclaimed his intent to sign off on 'any abortion restriction that reaches his desk' and that has likewise been vague on the issue of same-sex marriage, MormDem has taken the unprecedented step of nominating a Republican as his running-mate, Kentucky Senator CelticEmpire. Although CelticEmpire could be described as a 'Republitarian' much like the President, disagreements over foreign policy have ultimately cemented his position on the Democratic ticket, which will prove to make for a very bizarre cycle indeed.

Representative Goldwater won by bringing out small l libertarians and furthered his pull with Governor Bigby, and as a result won over liberals and conservatives.

In the hopes of getting some kind of unity ticket, Governor Goodwin J "MormDem" Knight of California selects  the more economically moderate and fiscally closer independent businessman Morris Yelnoc of Georgia

But Senator Murray Bannerman of Indiana was not going take this lying down and took on activist TNF of the neighboring Illinois.

Senator Murray Bannerman (R-IN)/ Mr. TNF (G-IL): 247 EV, 48.2% PV

Though party lines are still play, ultimately many socially liberal states decide to give Senator Bannerman the benefit of the doubt, given that his running mate is a Trotskyist.

On the flip side, otherwise conservative states in The South and Utah were not pleased by Bannerman's seemingly "godless" policies, and of course Mr. Yelnoc definitely helped reassure some of the more libertarian west.

Election of 2016: America Decides

Primaries

Governor Goldwater of Washington launches an insurgent bid in early 2015 to push the Republican Party towards a more marketable socially liberal position held by the newer generation. Due to the inability of the socially conservative field to coalesce on single candidate, Gov. Goldwater ekes out just enough delegates to secure the nomination at the convention despite the powerful lobbying of Oklahoma Governor Richard Pryor against him. He chooses Senator Jose Canseco as a running mate, as he meshes ideologically and can help with the key state of Florida.

Meanwhile, the Democrats push for a moderate to clash with the new Libertarian-leaning nominee of the Republicans. After taking a bruising from Elizabeth Warren in the primaries, Governor MormDem of California wins the nomination. The speculation surrounding MormDem's pick for Vice President generally seemed to conclude that he would pick a liberal to united the party, however Gov. MormDem shocks the country by announcing his pick of Gov. Richard Pryor in Atlanta.

General Election

The general election race is filled with many cross-party endorsements of candidates. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, incensed towards Gov. Goldwater for his defeat in the primaries endorses Gov. MormDem. Senator Angus King endorses Gov. Goldwater, saying "We need more maverick FFs in office."

The Goldwater ticket is bruised by revelations surrounding his running mate Sen. Canseco. The New Republic publishes in early October that Sen. Canseco has been using a wide variety of steroids. A video uploaded to Upworthy of him discussing the topic of the Koch Brothers creates much controversy; he states that Charles and David Koch "are fat, ugly, and do not lift like me and are beta males so i do not like them. obama & bush & clinton are beta males aswhell." His huge muscles and general disposition towards the electorate intimidates many voters, however this characteristic is shown to be a positive in New Jersey, with opinion polls showing the that that the guido vote has shifted the state into Goldwater's favor. In a novel later published on the Goldwater campaign called Changing Direction: The 2016 Goldwater Campaign, it is revealed that the Governor had attempted to drop Sen. Canseco from the ticket, but could not find anyone that he found suitable for the office. An insurgent campaign from the Constitution party drains from the usual Republican base.

The even-headed campaign by Governor MormDem and his running mate Governor Richard Pryor benefits from their establishment stances and the implosion of the Goldwater campaign. Gov. MormDem is hurt, however, when in a rally in Frankfort he states that he "would sign off on legislation putting restrictions on abortions."

Goldwater, hampered by his running mate and having his views found to be out of the mainstream is routed by the ticket of MormDem/Pryor. He becomes the first major party nominee since George McGovern in 1972 to lose his home state.

In an election like that last one with Pryor as my running mate against Goldwater/Canseco, I'd win Utah, not lose it.

I'd lose Oklahoma before Utah or Idaho.

------------------------------------------------------

As for this election, it would be a race between Secretary of Agriculture Henry W. Turkisblau and Governor Barry Goldwater III. One who stands to renew the New Deal, the other who stands for Laissez-faire economics.

In a move to get more Southern votes and more liberal turnout, Turkisblau selects Congressman Morris Yelnoc of Georgia, a self-proclaimed "socialist" (but really just 1960's Northern Democrat) with an equally fiery passion.

In contrast, Goldwater picks the very quiet, calculating, but liberal Attorney General Bradley Oakvale of Oregon...which alienates the socially conservative base entirely, but eases skeptical centrists who would otherwise be very wary of him.

Supreme Court Justice O. Kvale of Maryland becomes the first Supreme Court Justice in a century to head a major presidential ticket, as well as the first Irish Catholic to do so since the nomination of John F. Kennedy in 1960. A proud 'New Democrat', Kvale decides to balance out the ticket by nominating California Governor M. Arm Dem as his running-mate, bringing labor and other traditionally populist Democratic constituencies on board with his budget balancing agenda.

On the Republican side, former Senator Goal D. Water of Washington runs on an aggressive, militaristic platform of confrontation with the Russians, the North Koreans, the Iranians, and, well, pretty much everyone else. His campaign seems to be going well until a gaffe from his running-mate, body-building bible-thumper turned Missouri Governor Gauss "Alpha Male" Law fatally weakens his campaign, allowing Kvale an easy victory.

Thanks to a revived organized labor movement guaranteeing his victory in nearly all the caucus states and all the primary states with a labor presence to speak of, Illinois socialist entryist candidate Thomas N. Effry seizes the Democratic nomination against all logic. The Democratic establishment refuses to support him despite a few half-hearted endorsements, and after dozens of refusals, Effry picks the rather nondescript Californian ex-Senator Mort Dennison thanks to his connections with longshoremen.

With the economy in mild recession and the Iraq and Afghan wars still in recent memory, the hawkish, Washington-born Florida senator George Auhtwo was an unlikely Republican nominee, but his fiscal conservatism and big donor backing helped him overcome his more culturally conservative and isolationist rivals, picking the equally hawkish but much more reactionary Missouri governor Alfred Melman as his running mate. Despite Effry's open denunciation of the Obama administration's policies, his radical views plus general Democratic fatigue, Auhtwo's appeal to younger and nonwhite voters (Melman was successfully muzzled), and low turnout among the "ascendant coalition" added up to a comfortable victory for Auhtwo.

World War III has been raging for 9 months. The Democrats and Republicans put aside their differences to elect a unity ticket composed of MormonDem and Goldwater, to replace the out going president. The anti-war Socialist Unity ticket of TNF and Snowstalker is the highest vote-getting opposition ticket, netting 48% of the vote in the District of Colombia, but failing to win any electoral votes. The American public gives the unity ticket an overwhelming mandate to prosecute the war to its hellish end.

The Republican Party implodes after the Democrats gobble away at them in Congress over the 2008-2014 electoral period. An "Era of Good Feelings" results, with the only real existing party being the Democrats, holding supermajorities in both houses of Congress. A progressive coup occurs in 2016, with the Democrats nominating solid liberal MormDem of California; he selects eclectic Georgia independent Senator Yelnoc as his running mate to demonstrate "national unity".

Meanwhile, a hastily-organized convention of the newly-declared Socialist Labor Party in Chicago nominates labor activists Snowstalker and TNF for President on a platform of building a socialist state in America and granting workers control of the means of production. Outraged conservatives, forced to pick between "Obama Socialism and Pure Socialism", petition to have unpledged slates nominated in several states; these mostly succeed in the Deep South and Plains states. With the Democratic ticket's victory assured in November, turnout is low across the board. Notably, TNF and Snowstalker achieve nearly 20% of the vote, mostly as a protest ticket. In addition, the unpledged tickets succeed in 10 states; these electors wind up voting for scattered conservatives in December.

President MormDem is blessed with a very productive congress, passing complete universal healthcare and a peaceful and robust global economy. Things come to a halt in the 2018 elections when the movement created by the TNF/Snowstalker ticket in 2016 is materialized in a party called the Socialist Alternative, or SA which is much more organized the hastily created Socialist Labor party. The disarray in the conservative movement still does not coalesce under a single banner and many are elected on the "Opposition" ticket. The socialists stonewall many initiatives, often stating that they aren't going far enough or indirectly benefit capitalists.

The 2020 elections feature intra-party conflict with the democrats fearing a loss of power from a good socialist showing. This is made worse when VP Yelnoc who helped MormDem move to the left in 2016 begins a primary challenge to MormDem. The activists doom President MormDem's chances in the primary to his well established challenger. SA endorses Yelnoc after he picks Sen. Snowstalker for VP. Rather than fall to his radical challengers, MormDem begins an independent campaign rather than fall to the radical lean of his own party. Conservatives vote in waves for MormDem rather than see a real socialist get into office, and other farther left liberals are won over by Pres. MormDem's VP pick in the "Rooseveltian" California Governor phwezer.

The western unity ticket easily turns all the lean red states save Oregon blue despite a Mormon being in the 2 slot on the Democratic ticket while the more socially conservative Turkisblau eases fears over Goldwater losing the south - though Kentucky and West Virginia are closer than expected.

Meanwhile Smith manages to keep VA in the Dem column but cannot do enough as VP to pull the bluer NC over - the rare libertarian-leaning southern state. Goldwater alienates the Midwest and struggles more than expected in Ohio particularly, but NH is the decisive state where he plays strong and wins.

With tension between the US and the Soviet Union after WW2, the Republicans nominate staunch anti-Communist Sen. Goldwater of WA as their candidate. To unify the party, the dovish Gov. S. Milo of PA is chosen as VP.  The populist Majority Whip, L.D. Smith of Virginia, is chosen for the Democratic ticket, though he is opposed by the conservative Byrd organization in his own state.  With Sen. N. Canada Land of New York as VP, the Democrats pledge peace in the international realm and an expanded and more efficient social welfare state. While the Democrats are seen as too soft on Communism, the Republicans are feared to be too eager to roll back the New Deal. Smith and Land win in a close election.

Republicans decide to go with a new route. Shaw Milo and John Shua, both of the libertarian wing of the party, offer a new vision for the party. They win in an upset over the leaders, and run up the score in the polls. Milo, however, falls behind in the debates, and the race is once again a toss-up. Vice President Charles Land was always vulnerable, due to his overly embracing support of Canada, causing his opponents to attack him as unpatriotic. Both Milo and Shua themselves disregarded the attacks, but nevertheless he fell victim to the attacks. In the last weeks, however, combined with strong debate performances, came the attacks on Milo's plan for social security. This significantly weakened him with olds. And the choice of Lance Smith the surprise Senator of Utah and devout mormon for on the Democratic ticket threw NEvada to the Democrats. However, Republicans made up for it with a wide and surprising win in Pennsylvania and Iowa. Milo ended up winning, but not with a mandate that he so desired.

The US adopts a top-two runoff system. This is the December runoff (ignore EV counts). CA Gov. Goldwater and Rep. shua were nominated by the Liberal, Republican, and Populist parties. Mayor TNF and Rep. Peebs were nominated by the Socialist-Left Alliance, a merger of the American Socialist and Progressive-Left parties. The Democrats ran their own candidate in the general election while the Greens (center-left ITTL) and Libertarians also ran candidates. Facing a potential progressive exodus from the ticket he chooses NC-12 Rep. Peebs as his running mate, calming progressives though not exactly helping him out with sunbelt suburban folks who don't like populism or progressivism. OH is the tipping point state.
