Oh so no more LDS?

Let us know how it goes. I hear Quaker meetings are actually rather boring.

Quakers reflect on their faith which you know, is a little more spiritual than waving your arms around like a tit.

Tell us how it goes Tweed.

a main motivation is having a paper trail of involvement in pacifism in order to dodge possible conscription into the military.

That was during the immediate post-9/11 scare phase.

All that said, let us know how it goes. I've been to Quaker meetings. They're relaxing, if a little uncanny in their quiescence.

of course I am aware of that.  the point being that when the war machine is in full gear, nearly anything can happen, and there's no reason to believe it won't happen again.

I briefly thought of you today when after the baptisms and dedications the lead pastor then said some prayer about unleashing our freedom in worship, and it was perfectly right to want to celebrate and throw your hands in the air, probably because of being aware that because of the baptisms/dedications there were a lot of people there not normally going to the church who probably don't normally worship charismatically. It's kind of funny how non-believers can be the most dogmatic about this type of thing.

So Tweed, how'd it go?

Are you aware of where the term "Quaker" comes from? (hint: it's not from sitting still in a pew)

Yeah I was thinking of that too...

so I never did do this, but I've started to make a few contacts within the Society of Friends and hopefully will attend a meeting this Sunday.  my interests and beliefs have gradually gravitated towards a Christian pacifism, though aren't quite there yet, and SoF is the most obvious place to start.  wish me luck.

I've been to a Quaker service myself once, and may go again someday on a fourth Sunday.  (My UU church skips the fourth Sunday.)  I was told is was fairly eventful service as four of the people were inspired to say something which was more than usual.  Following the period of quiet reflection, they did some more traditional hymn singing and then they had their equivalent of Sunday school, tho it was more involved in social activism than anything strictly spiritual.  Not that that is bad, but not what I consider for church.

There's every reason to believe it won't.  The modern US military does not need or make use of masses of lightly equipped, poorly trained troops.  Maybe if we were at risk of being actually invaded, the draft would come back, but that's not the case, nor do I expect there is even the slightest chance of that happening while you are of draftable age.

Nope, 55 weeks and running. It's a good feeling.

I meant no offense by my quick post, but, IIRC and not conflating you with another poster, you have been rather upfront that you have sought some counseling before. Even in the unlikely event of a military draft, this background would almost certainly gain you what used to be called a 4F. Of course there are flaws in screening for volunteers, Manning, B., but if you didnt want to serve you could almost certainly point to this and not have to do a charade of being a Quaker.

do you know how many Americans are diagnosed with major depressive disorder / generalized anxiety disorder nowadays?  you think all of them would be able to get out of compulsory military service?

I think your fears of a draft are misplaced in the first place. Secondly, with all of the coverage of the surge in suicides, PTSD etc yeah I think they would have a tight screen before they start handing out M4's. FWIW, I don't go near a firearm or sensitive information and disclosures were still in the security background checks.
