Title: Did I make the right decision
Post by: Atlas Has Shrugged on August 07, 2012, 09:17:03 PM
So I went and got my permit. Forgot my glasses, so my mom had to drive back and get them. Luckily, the fact that I failed my eye exam on the first try was discounted. I was also offered a chance to register to vote. Apparently you can register to vote at 16, you just can't, you know, vote...I declined but I kind of regret it. It was on the spot. I debate for a few seconds if I should register Libertarian, Constitution, or Republican. Republicans give me a greater career choice if I go into some type of political strategy career, as well as allowing me to vote in primaries. I declined, and said I would sometime before 2014 (when I will be able to vote), but I regret it now. Should I have registered, or should I just wait?

Yes, you made the right decision. Two years from now, you might be more inclined to register with a certain party. If offered the opportunity to register, I'd probably wait until I was 18 as well.

Also, congrats on getting your permit! :D I won't be able to get mine until I'm at least 17 :P

This decision will have literally no effect on your life, I promise.

It won't at all, I'm just debating if it was worth the time or not.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

You made the right decision. I was rushed as well to registered to vote at the Romney rally and didn't have the chance to debate if I wanted to be Independent, Republican or Democrat (sorry third parties and even independent since I want to vote in the primaries).

Oh, don't worry! You'll have many opportunities to register to vote in the coming years. :)

Indiana has completely open primaries and no party registration, which stinks, but oh well.

Yes, everybody should get a driver's license.

You should've pre-registered; it'd probably help you get more involved in party work and such.

You made the right decision. This will give you more time about which party you want to register with, and when you do you'll be able to do so with more confidence.

You did the right thing. I registered as a Republican when I did it but I wish I went Independent instead. It will give you a chance to think it through.

What if you moved before you could vote? Wouldn't you just have to re-register again? Right decision.

I simply weighed the pros and cons and asked the forum for their opinion. Your right-Atlas is much more intelligent compared to my mom in these kind of matters :P

See, I never took that into account. Good point.

I'd have registered, just to say "yeah, it's done". But I'm me, so take advice with a grain of salt.

I turned 16 in 2008, but I didn't even get the basic drivers license (which doesn't require knowing how to drive) until 2011, when I was 19. And I'm only taking actual driving classes now, at 20. I know a girl who is only getting driving classes at 24.

I didn't register to vote until after I was 18.  On my 18th birthday, I printed out a registration form and filled it out, and the next day I hand-delivered it to my local clerk.  But I live in an open primary state, so I didn't register with a party.  (Although if I could have, I would've registered as a Republican.)  I think it would be nice if you could list a party preference in open primary states, just as long as it didn't have any binding on which primary you could vote in.
