Post by: Rural Radical on February 01, 2005, 02:54:52 PM
Will Al Gore do a Richard Nixon and run 8 years after losing as incumbent Vice president in a very close election ?

"You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference. " - Richard Nixon

"I'm a recovering politician" - Al Gore

Possibly, but not likely.

No.  Nixon did some heavy campaigning after 1960.  Gore shows no signs of doing that.

Since Gore has been steadily losing touch with reality since his loss in 2000, I sincerely hope that he tries again.  However, I seriously doubt that the Dem leadership would let his candidacy get off the ground.

That could help him in the primaries among liberals, but it would kill him in the general.

If Gore campaigned like crazy for Kerry, maybe... remember  Nixon unlike most other well know Republicans went all over the country campaigning for Goldwater.  It looked dumb in 1964... but it made perfect sense four years later.

There are three Al Gore's: DLCist, Populist and Greenie Liberal.
Wait and see.

There would certainly be worse possible candidates.

Given Gore's recent meltdowns, who on the DEM side would be a worse candidate.

I'm praying that (loud sigh) that Gore (loud sigh) run again and drone on endlessly about his (loud sigh) Social (loud sigh) Security Lockbox(loud sigh).  That will be good for 40 states in the GOP column even if we run someone like Frist, which I pray that we don't.

Eisenhower 1952 - 1960
Clinton 1992 - 2000

Nixon narrowly loses 1960
Gore narrowly loses 2000

Nixon endorses maverick candidate, Goldwater that revolutionizes party 1964
Gore endorses maverick candidate, Dean that revolutionizes party 2004.

Nixon runs in 1968 and wins
Gore runs in 2008 and wins (???)

Would Gore be the certain winner in the primaries? What if he faced Clark, Dean, Kerry--or Hillary Clinton? Like I proposed somewhere else (but was never answered), who would Democrats think better resembles the positive sides of the Clinton years, Al Gore or Hillary Clinton? That would be the question if the two faced each other.

Nixon is embroiled in scandal and resigns in 1974.
Gore is embroiled in scandal and resigns in 2014.

Democrats regain White House in 1976.
Republicans regain White House in 2016.

How much further would you like this comparison to go?  If we were going to compare current/future events to historical events, John Kerry would have won the election.

Joe,
The CNN graphics are classic.  It's good to know that Turner's media empire will stop at nothing to get the news right.

Sounds good to me!

I think he'll run which will be like "doing a Nixon" however he won't win like Nixon did.

you really think a guy who's already won the popular vote would lose to someone like Frist?

I like Gore. I think he'd make a great President. I'd be nervous about the campaign though. I think if Hillary runs, Gore has NO chance. If neither Hillary nor Kerry run, Gore would have a decent shot at the nomination. If the populist Gore shows up for the race, I think he'd have a good shot at it.

It could happen. I think that would be great. I like Gore and probably would have voted for him in 2000 if I were old enough.
