I don't think it's fair to said that. It's more about circumstances. John Porter East died from a suicide. Terry Sanford got a heart valve infection and wasn't able to campaign. John Edwards was on the presidential ticket and didn't seek relection. Elizabeth Dole doesn't even live in North Carolina.
