Title: Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge born.
Post by: Atlas Has Shrugged on July 11, 2013, 03:19:12 PM
I suppose that this is somewhat important, as the baby will be head of state in the future. (http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/10/world/europe/royal-baby-qa)

If it is a girl, how many British tabloids will be calling her Princess of Wails?  Will the number be higher if she is named after her grandmother Diana?

I doubt Diana... it's far, far too loaded.

I think something 'royal' but distant like Alexandra or Victoria, Diana 'could' be a middle name... and Elizabeth as a middle name covers all kinds of bases, it's Kate's middle name as well as her mothers and well you know... HM.

So... Alexandra Elizabeth Diana...

If I was one of the royal couple, I would insist on the baby being called either John or Mary, and insist on that being their coronation name, if they were to be King/Queen. I would repeatedly insist that King John and Bloody Mary were just misunderstood.

Or I'd constantly wear t-shirts that said "Down with the monarchy" and name the kid something fictional and nerdy (Frodo, maybe? Or Hagrid).

I would be a terrible member of the royal family.

Only if it survives its father, grandfather and greatgrandmother and the monarchy also survives that long.

So there is hope.

That would make Prince William 118 at the time of death, while I'm not one to doubt advances in medical science, it seems a little unlikely.

If it is a girl, how many British tabloids will be calling her Princess of Wails?  Will the number be higher if she is named after her grandmother Diana?

HRH the Prince(ess) ____ of Cambridge.  (Fourth in line to the thrown, heir apparent, to the heir apparent of the heir apparent)

Wales is a life peerage, in effect, and a new prince(ess) is created.  There has never been a Princess of Wales, as such.

Boy:  Phillip or George (I'd bet George)

Girl:  Victoria, Elizabeth, or Alexandra with Diana as a middle name.  I would expect Diana to be in there.

There would be no numbers until the baby rules.  Yes, it is possible that this baby will be on the throne is 2101, holding a grandchild.  :)

Note that is entirely possible for a sovereign to chose a different regal name, as Edward VII was Albert.

The tradition is nice, as is future focal point of the nation, someone beyond politics.  Prince Rufus (for lack of a better name) will in many ways be a prisoner, a privileged one, but we can start listing what he can't be.

Actually, Charles had issued a non-denial denial (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/dec/27/monarchy.michaelwhite) leaving open the possibility.  Still if he does decide to not be Charles III, George VII is the only logical choice.  I can't see him or any English monarch being brash enough to reign as King Arthur and being crowned King Philip II would bring up a thorny bit of history.

Prince William is pretty much stuck with being William V, as Philip, Arthur, and Louis are not really viable options.

Only time will tell if Prince George chooses to reign as King Alexander IV or not.

Philip I was married to "bloody Mary" I and the first three Alexanders were Scottish Kings, if I am correct. I believe they combine numerals if the name has been used in England and Scotland at seperate times.

Alexander would be Alexander I & IV just like James II & VII I suppose...and that would be much too complicated.

This was discussed and had a legal case fought over it when Elizabeth II took the throne, since there was never an Elizabeth I of Scotland. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacCormick_v_Lord_Advocate) Winston Churchill's suggestion, which most of people seem to take as assumed, was to go with whichever number is higher. Hence, Elizabeth II rather than Elizabeth II & I, but Alexander IV rather than Alexander I & IV, or, come to that, James VIII rather than James III & VIII or James III.
