Title: Cruz says he will renounce his Canadian citizenship

Donald Trump gets results:

Quote
Sen. Ted Cruz acknowledged late Monday that he probably has been a lifelong Canadian, and vowed to renounce that citizenship now that he realizes he’s had it.

“The Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz, a freshman Republican from Texas, said in a statement. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. Senator, I believe I should be only an American.”

The News reported Monday that the circumstances of Cruz’s birth– in Canada but to an American mother – made him a dual citizen. That apparently came as startling news to the 42-year-old senator, who has been touring Iowa and other early-voting states in preparation for a White House bid.

Dammit, I was just about to post this! :P

I don't see why Ted Cruz would want to do this, even if he is running for president.  The Constitution says that to be a president, one must be a natural born citizen... nothing about dual citizenship, unless there's another law or court decision I'm unaware of.

He probably thinks the symbolic gesture of reaffirming he's 'all-american' is worth it.

Apparently, under the Cuban constitution, anyone born to a Cuban citizen abroad automatically has Cuban citizenship.

I don't really see the point.  Who cares if he has dual citizenship?

I know it's a little odd that Cruz did this but then again it makes sense esp. if Canadian laws  stipulate that he was eligible for citizenship there.

For instance I don't know Canadian laws on citizenship, but where I live there is quite a large military population and I have met military family offspring's who were born in Germany while their parents were stationed there to 2 American parents that ended up getting German citizenship at birth.

Also off the bat unlike Obama who was born to 1 foreign national parent on American soil, Cruz was born to 1 American parent in a foreign country which makes things much more complicated at face value.

So it seems like a logical move at least imo, esp. if he is going to run for President.

LOL, I don't see a problem with it.

A friend of mine has dual citizenship and she votes for all Democrats in US Elections and for all Liberals in the Canadian elections.

Does Cruz even vote in the Canadian elections?  What is his Canada voting record?  Does he buy cheaper prescription drugs or get free Canadian healthcare or other goodies?

People should be able to leech off 2 countries if they are eligible.  Does he pay Canadian taxes?

It would be cool to have someone run for both Canadian and US government.

No, he says he didn't even realize that he had Canadian citizenship until recently, when a journalist pointed out to him that Canadian law would make him a citizen.

Btw, Canada changed their citizenship laws in 2009, to make it so that the child of any Canadian citizen who was born in Canada would automatically be a citizen, regardless of where they themselves were born.  They even made promotional videos about it, called "Waking up Canadian":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDeDQpIQFD0

Under those new rules, I am a Canadian citizen because my mother is a Canadian citizen born in Canada, even though she's spent the vast majority of her life in the US, and even though I was born in the US and never lived in Canada.  I've never done anything to claim my Canadian citizenship though, but maybe I should.  I suppose I could also try to go for Australian citizenship, and become a triple citizen.

So we come to the same conclusion as Michele Bachmann's brief stint as a Swiss citizen last year. I suppose it's quite an easy way to gain some Patriot points.

Michelle Bachmann says she loves America and she loves Israel. Like Cruz, she's a suck up.

Where is this Canuck's original long form birth certificate?

It's stashed away in a giant cubby hole with Obama's birth certificate and the WMD from Iraq.

Cruz would have to file the relevant paperwork and pay a $100 fee if he wants to go through with this:

But I doubt he'll actually bother.

I don't really see the point.  Who cares if he has dual citizenship?

Don't you see. As President-Prime Minister, Cruz could help inaugurate the New World Order by merging the United States and Canada and using the savings to buy black helicopters.

Cruz had previously insisted that he qualified as a "natural born citizen" and that he was eligible to be president, but now he sounds more agnostic:

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz on Tuesday refused to say whether he believes he is eligible to run for president of the United States even though he was born in Canada.

"I'm not going to speculate about legal consequences - I'm going to leave that to others," Cruz told reporters at a press conference ahead of a town hall style meeting in Dallas focused on repealing President Barack Obama's health care law.

"I've been an American since birth," he said.

He also released his birth certificate:

There's never a way to tell if a birth certificate is real or not anymore. I could print one out for Obama and liberals would believe it's his. With the internet we can do anything.

Interesting how it asks for the father's occupation, but not the mother's. Actually it's just plain interesting that a birth certificate would have that info about either parent.

Oh, God. It would not be a big lose.

Badgate: Considering than Alberta was run by a religious party from the 30's to the 70's (Social Credit), only listing father's occupation isn't very exceptionnal.
