Title: Rasmussen: Carson & Paul closest to Hillary Clinton
Post by: Tender Branson on June 23, 2014, 10:20:30 AM
45-38 Clinton/Carson (+7)
46-39 Clinton/Paul (+7)
47-36 Clinton/Rubio (+11)
50-37 Clinton/Cruz (+13)
47-33 Clinton/Christie (+14)
50-36 Clinton/Perry (+14)

Quote
Among Likely Republican Voters, Paul is the top vote-getter against Clinton with 79% support, followed by Cruz at 75% and Carson with 74%. Seventy-one percent (71%) of GOP voters favor Perry in a matchup with Clinton, while Rubio earns 68% support and Christie 66% among their fellow Republicans.

Among Likely Democratic Voters, Clinton earns 82% to 90% support against the six Republicans, running strongest against Cruz and Christie.

Voters not affiliated with either major political party are closely divided in all six matchups, with Clinton leading by two to six points against Rubio, Christie, Cruz and Perry. Paul and Carson both have a four-point edge over Clinton among these voters.

While Carson is black, he does not fare any better than his fellow Republicans among black voters.

Awful result for Christie.

Non-black voters (I assume particularily white voters) want Ben Carson for president. However, black voters do absolutely not. What a black and white story. We need some more colours and some grey to revive this old movie.

Christie still being anchored by bridgegate.

Do 38% of Americans know who Ben Carson is?

Do 38% of Americans know who Ben Carson is?

They made a movie about him starring Cuba Gooding Jr., and my Democrat mother told me to read his autobiography once, so I'd imagine so.

Carson definitely has lower name recognition than everyone else on that list, so it's possible he could be functioning as "generic Republican". Hopefully this encourages the GOP base to nominate him.

GE polls at this stage are worthless.

He's not another Herman Cain though, let's make that clear already. His intelligence is far superior than most of the 2012 GOP candidates.

^ This exactly. You may disagree with everything Carson stands for politically, but the man is brilliant, extremely well-educated, and very intelligent.

While I'm not doubting his expertise in the field of medicine, he's yet to display this any time he opens his mouth on politics.

And winning the presidency isn't about who's the most intelligent.  Herman Cain minus the predatory sex scandals would have made a much better candidate than Carson.

The only policy Cain ever offered was his 9-9-9 tax talking point. Did he have any substantial opinions on any other political question? I think not. Whatever the debate moderator asked him about, he pretty much ignored it and returned to talk about 9-9-9 instead. Not exactly clever. Cain is a nobody and it's ridiculous to claim otherwise.

That's not how name recognition normally works though.  Typically, low name recognition means low support in polls, whereas "Generic Democrat" and "Generic Republican" tend to poll pretty well.

I'm inclined to think it's just a bad poll.  But I'd like to see other pollsters include Carson in GE matchups, and/or poll his name recognition before jumping to conclusions.

There's a difference between having technical expertise in a narrow field like neurosurgery and being a 'genius'. Carson has basically no grasp of politics.

Ben Carson could be a very impressive candidate in a general election.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carson runs. In the conservative bubble where he resides everyone is always telling him how great he is and how he should run and he perceives this as god's way of showing him his destiny. He will then get in and once under the microscope he will flame out after saying something stupid.

Sounds like the same reason why McDaniel is throwing a temper tantrum and crying about imaginary voter fraud. The voters couldn't possibly reject him, the Great Chris McDaniel. Everyone he knew voted for him!

One thing this poll shows is that Christie is toast.  His big talking point was his "electability", and now it's being destroyed.

No one likes him.  He's was a fat blowhard, and now his a much thinner blowhard.  And he's a bully.  That's what Bridgegate is about; the idea that he is a bully who won't own up to his bullying.  Whether he's indicted or not (and I doubt he'll be indicted), the damage to his image will be permanent.  It's quite possible that he won't even run.  A few more polls like this and Sheldon Adelson won't take his calls, no matter how many times he apologizes for calling the West Bank the "Occupied Territories".
