At present posting rates, Tweed being bumped out of the top ten because both Tender and Lief catch up to him should happen much faster than that.  Perhaps within about a month and a half.

My friends, Al was up in the #2 slot from very early in this forum's history.  However, some time in the first half of 2007, he lost that 2nd place slot and quickly dropped to 5th, as upstarts like BRTD and Gabu rocketed up through the standings.

Well, a few new people will be moving on to page 1 one of these days.  A18 is soon to fall off onto page 2.  He really did have an incredible run, racking up ~20,000 posts in less than 18 months from August 2004 to early 2006.  If he'd kept posting at that rate for another five years, he'd be well ahead of BRTD.  But instead, he just slowed down to a trickle and then stopped.

It definitely takes some work. I've been online for just about half a year (185 days). But I've been a member for over 11 years and a moderator for 5 years. I leave Atlas logged in as a background page so I can check if there's anything that needs attention. My online time here is about the equivalent of a hour a day.

Also, like I said earlier in the thread, if you keep going at the rate you're going, you'll be in the top 10 within a year.  Lief's posting rate has slowed down, and he'll fall behind Tender in the near future to drop to 10th.  You should be able to catch up within a year, since you're "only" ~2500 posts behind him.  :P

My post rate will probably slow down significantly after classes begin, though. I think I'll eventually get into the top 10, but it might take a bit longer.

Happy to note I have been here for over ten years, and haven't made much over 14,000 posts.

By my count, in the past month, Kal has made ~325 posts, while Eraserhead has made ~110.  Since the gap between them is now 214 posts, I'd say one month from today is the most likely estimate.

Outside the top 10, Alcon passed the 30,000 mark a few days ago.  And Jfern will reach 35,000 within ~2 weeks or so.

Within the top 10, the next shift will be Kal catching up to Eraserhead.  The gap between them has actually grown a bit in the last week or so, but Kal should eventually catch up within the next two months or so.  The gap between Tender and Lief is a bit narrower at the moment, but I think it’ll take Tender longer to catch up to Lief than it’ll take Kal to take to catch up to Eraserhead, given recent posting rates.

I'd say I had a very fitting 75000th post:

It took BRTD about 5.5 years to go from 50,000 posts to 75,000 posts.  So if he kept going at that pace, he’d reach 100,000 in 2021.

However, more recently, his pace has slowed down.  He made ~670 posts in the last four months.  So that’s a pace of ~2000 posts a year.  So that would be ~12.5 years to reach the 100,000 mark, putting it in the year 2028.

I feel old for remembering the days when BRTD had less than 50,000 posts... :P

The ModCave enjoys subscribing to a revisionist history and pretending that certain controversial events of the past never happened. The posts may remain, and we may be able to look at their profile to see the number, but by all accounts, they never actually happened.

Well, if activity from the past month or two were to continue indefinitely, then it's conceivable that I could catch up to both of them within ~2.5-3 years or so.

Not sure if Kal has decided to go on hiatus or what.  He hasn't logged in for 10 days.  Before leaving, he deregistered from Atlasia and changed his username to "--".  So what's up?  He was posting a lot just before he left.

He (or someone else) also seems to have deleted some of his old posts, bringing him back down to 40,018.  Maybe he *won't* ever catch up to Eraserhead after all.

Indeed, by my count, 47 or your 50 last posts on the forum were on either the 2016 presidential election board, or one of the 2016 presidential election polling boards.  So your long term lead over Tender depends on the fate of Trump.  If he wins both the GOP nomination and the general election, then I foresee you racing ahead in the standings, ultimately reaching the top 5.  If not, then Tender catches up to you in 2017, if not earlier.

Trump continues to be a ratings boon for the forum.  July was the third month this year with over 50,000 across the forum.  The only months in which that happened pre-2016 were October 2008 and October 2012.

Actually I think both prolific as well as less prolific posters should consider deleting some old posts (topics and polls that never got off the ground, single posts that generated no responses) and collectively relieve the server.

With some effort, Kal can end up in the top 3, easy peezy. 

He has a clear path, since Lewis, Phil, and opebo are all gone.  However, he's more than 15,000 posts away, so it'll take at least a couple years.

As far as who's where, you can always check by clicking on the "Member's List" at the bottom of the general forum page and then ordering by number of posts. Currently, it's Xahar, jfern, and Grumps.

Antonio's made over 1000 posts in the past month, while Eraserhead's under 100.  So Antonio should pass both Tender and Eraserhead and reach 7th place within the next two months, *if* he keeps going at his current pace.

Xahar, Jfern, and Grumps are 11th, 12th, and 13th place.  If Jfern came back and starting posting as much as he did before he left, he could catch up to Lief at #10.  But Xahar and Grumps don't post enough these days to reach the top ten.  (Xahar was in the top ten, but got bumped out by Antonio.)  I don't really see anyone new reaching the top ten within the next year unless Jfern returns.

This despite the forum design looking like something from the previous century (perhaps because it almost literally is) and despite the fact that the entire concept of online discussion boards peaked around 2005.

Given how busy it's been today, we stand a very good chance of reaching 3000 posts today, which again would be the highest it's been since primary season.  Anyone want to predict how many posts we'll get on election day if the server doesn't crash?

We've now had 3000+ posts for three days in a row.  This is much higher traffic than the forum had in the run up to election day 2008 or 2012.  Again, it looks like Trump is good for ratings.

The FBI news (and the usual variety of threads that spawn from it) might help to put us over 3000 again today. Need a bit over a 1000 to reach that number with more than seven hours (many of which are peak hours) to go.

3456 posts on Sunday, which may be an all time record.  Imagine how big Monday and Tuesday will be if there's no crash.

This month, with 419 new users, has the most new users since September 2010, which has the all time record of 504.

Looks like Antonio hasn't posted since election day?  If he doesn't come back within the next month or so, then Eraserhead could retake the #7 spot from him.  Eraserhead isn't posting at a terribly high rate either, but it's only a 48 post deficit at the moment.

Btw, now that jfern is back, and posting at a high rate, he stands an excellent chance of making it into the top 10 (presumably knocking out Lief) at some point within the next six months.

No, there's no way for me to check such things that's any different from how everyone else can do it: Go through the list of "likely suspects" one by one, and view the "show the latest posts of this person" link on their profile page, then count the number from a certain date onwards.

I'm pretty sure Wayback Machine has caches of the top posters page on early January of each year. With a couple of subtractions you could get a rough estimate.

You don't need the Wayback Machine.  Like I said, for a given poster, it's easy enough to figure out how many posts they made over a given time interval.  Just go to their profile page, click on the "latest posts" link, and then look at how many posts they made over the time interval in question.  Since the posts are numbered, it's simple.

The question being asked though was whether the forum software has a way of sorting who is posting at the greatest rate at any particular time.  And to that, the answer is (AFAIK) no.  All you can do is guess who the most likely suspects are, and then check their profiles accordingly.

You can see the general stats panel for everyone, which will list it, and there's a top 10 on the Stats Page. Otherwise, no.

A series of direct database queries could probably do this. Is that an option for you? If so, assuming Dave didn't make any heavy modifications to the posts/threads table, I could download SMF and put those queries together. It seems they offer downloads for legacy versions (of which this board is running afaik)

No, I don't have any access to the actual architecture of the forum.  I can see IP addresses and which posts were moderated and which accounts were banned, and so forth, but that's it.  On the stuff we're talking about, I don't have any super powers that aren't available to any other poster.

I just watched a movie where a person hears a voice in his head that narrates his whole life as if he were a fictional character, casting it in the most negative light. Thanks guys for giving me a vague sense of how that must feel. :P

Off-topic, but going through the statistics page, I noticed that November 2016 saw the largest influx of new users in Atlas history, at 547 new users for the month. The 2nd biggest month was, weirdly enough, September 2010 at 504 new users. After that, the 3rd largest doesn't even come close to those two as far as I can tell. Hell, comparatively, 2008 numbers were very underwhelming given that election's intensity.

I wonder why those two months, but Sept 2010 in particular, saw such large, isolated increases. Nov in a presidential election year makes a lot more sense than Sept of a midterm.

The spike for this year seems painfully obvious.  Obama/McCain  Obama/Romney were milk-toast battles compared to this one.

Also, Dave required an account to browse the forum for a good week and a half this year, and a lot of lurkers with 0 posts signed up.

Grumps making it into the top 10 some time early next year is starting to look plausible again, since he made ~360 posts in the last month.  Lief is going to get bumped out of the top ten by Jfern within the next ~3 months or so, and then Eraserhead is kind of a sitting duck, since he's all but stopped posting.  So Eraserhead will drop down to 10th place fairly quickly, and then could conceivably get bumped out by someone like Grumps next year.

Wow, you know how to get a guy to stop posting, MM.  :P

January 2017 will be the busiest month we've ever had on the forum that was not in a presidential election year.  And it's in the top 10 even if you include presidential election years.

In fact, 7 of the top 10 busiest months we've ever had have come in the last 12 months.  Trump is going to make Dave Leip a rich man.

Making Atlas Great Again.

Yesterday was the least active day on the forum since before the inauguration.  I guess Trump is no longer shocking us so much.  Or at least, not so much that we feel like we need to talk about him as much anymore.

This despite eharding's best efforts I take it. Moving right along, in a more perfect world, fewer posts with higher quality would be the norm around here. But the world ain't perfect. Who knew?

It seems like every presidential election since Atlas was created, the activity in the year(s) after are a decent bit more than the previous iteration. The circus that we call the 2016 presidential election does seem to have given its own special boost to activity as well. The only thing that doesn't seem to have followed a similar upward trend is the number of new registrants per month. 2008, 2012 & 2016 were only modest years for new members despite the presidential election going on, yet each time, were followed by a year(s) of booming user growth. I wonder why that is.

It's pretty interesting to look at the statistics page though. All sorts of neat trends to see. If Trump keeps things at least modestly interesting, the next 4 years might be a great time for the growth of this forum.

I would note that while things have slowed down a little since the inauguration and post-inauguration craziness, the forum is still markedly more active than is normal for March of an odd-numbered year.  Even yesterday, which as I said was the slowest day here since early January, still had ~50% more posts than the same day four years ago.

In other non-depressing news, the forum continues to have activity that is often higher or at least on par with October 2014. One area the forum does consistently better with is online users. Going by statistics, this forum has come a long way since 2013.

#97 for me and with ag at #95 and only 47 posts ahead, I expect to move up within a month. However, my pace isn't going to get me into the upper ranks any time soon.

So by now we've seen a near 6 point drop. Atlas has come a long way!

Even though the number of new posts per day is dropping off from the post-inauguration numbers, the number of new registrations on the forum remains strong.  Over 100 new registrations in March, which means we've now had three consecutive months with over 100 new registrations for the first time since 2013.  Somehow, new people are managing to find the forum.

We seem to be at least slightly coming off the Trump high in some ways:

Threads per day: Settling back down into Fall 2015 range, which is still high - higher than 2013/2014.
Posts per day: We seem set to hit about 40,000 - 42,000 posts for the month, which if it stays that way is still higher than just about any other time period for Atlas except 2016, which was very high, and 2010, where it was about even. Another way to look at it is Mar 2017 may see as many posts/threads as Nov 2008.
Users/day: This is one strong part. Atlas is still getting almost double the number of users online per day than in March 2013 (and almost every other month in '13)

I just wonder if this is a new baseline or if activity is still poised to go further down. Given how Trump is stirring certain parts of America into a constant frenzy, I feel like heightened political interest could continue. I feel like if Atlas had a more active What-If board and other subjects not dependent on the media, it would probably see more activity.

I need to stop checking these stats so much.

Yesterday was Atlas's most active day of the month, going by # of posts. 3rd highest in thread count, 2nd highest in user registrations, although the max users online count was unremarkable.

Yeah, I think the increase in activity had a lot to do with EHarding.  Then, when people are already here discussing other stuff, they are probably more likely to start a topic too.

It's not just Eharding, but also the continuation of the NSV spam-athon.  (Even though he deleted all his own posts, the posts other people made in response to him remain.)

Jfern has crossed the 40,000 post mark, and is now ~700 posts behind Lief (who's in 10th place).  Jfern will probably knock Lief out of the top ten within the next 4 months or so.

I'm wondering if Atlas will sink back into the mid-high 30,000-monthly posts range now that the initial confirmations/100 days stuff is about over. The average number of posts per day seems to be somewhere between 1150 - 1250, which on its own would amount to high 30k/per month. Although I suppose it is still better than 4 years ago, where <mid-2013 was averaging low 30k - high 20k (or less) per month. The next ~5 months should definitely test out the idea of whether or not Trump being Trump is enough to sustain the activity boost this site has gotten. Overall, it does seem like the forum is growing quite a bit.

What Atlas really needs is more activity not based around the media. Whether it be more active games or TL section.

So as I mentioned, Jfern will soon knock Lief out of 10th place.  And not long after that, Eraserhead will be down to 10th place, as Tender is about to pass him, and Jfern will catch up to Eraserhead within a few months of him catching up to Lief.  That's because Eraserhead barely ever posts anymore.

So who will ultimately knock Eraserhead out of the top 10, and when will they do it?  Barring some unforeseen event, it's not going to happen this year.  But could it happen in 2018?  Maybe.  I had previously suggested that Grumps might do it, but Grumps's posting has slowed down quite a bit.  But North Carolina Yankee has got a shot at pulling it off in 2018, if he manages to keep up his recent posting rate.  He's close to 35,000 posts now, and has made over 400 posts in the last month.

Eraserhead hasn’t posted in over a month now.  But the people outside the top ten are far enough behind that Eraserhead’s place in the top ten is most likely guaranteed until around the second half of 2018.

The next milestone to look forward to is BRTD reaching the 80,000 post mark, which should happen with the next two months.

April only had 1% more posts than the same month four years ago, so we may have dropped back down to "normal" activity levels, following the Trump-fueled sugar high of the last year.

I think part of the problem is, as I've mentioned before, Atlas feeds on media cycles, so if its slow(er) everywhere else, it trickles down here, and vice versa.

If you were to mean the average of this month, or over the past month, it would be upwards of 1400 or 1500, respectively. Trump's Russia woes and a spate of various elections have been good to Atlas. May was the most active month since January.

The level of activity for Atlas right now seems very unprecedented for a non-federal election year. Given that next year is the midterm, and the year after that will probably see major early buzz for the presidential election, this kind of activity could easily become the new normal for this forum.

I am assuming that between Comey and the UK election, we will break 1500 today, yes.  And possibly much more than that.

You were right of course - Atlas hit 2,557 posts today, with a high point of 499 users online at the same time. That is the most posts in a single day since Nov 10th.

I've expected a s**tload of reports from International Elections due to UK general election, but Atlasians kept it civil beyond comprehension...

With both Eraserhead and Lief no longer posting, their days in the top ten are numbered.  Lief's days are *really* numbered, as jfern is only 23 posts behind him right now, and will presumably take his place at #10 in a few days.

Eraserhead will take longer to dislodge from the top ten, but (unless he returns and starts posting at a high rate again) it'll probably happen some time next year (and if not then, then 2019).  And I'm back to thinking that Grumps is the frontrunner to dislodge him.  Currently a little over 3000 posts behind Eraserhead, but given his recent posting rate, he can certainly do it in a year.

Election day threads themselves often don't yield that many reports, because the discussion moves so quickly and people are always moving on to the latest development, and so any controversial comments get buried quickly.  It's more slow-boiling threads that result in a lot of reports.

Well yes, given it was pretty much reporting constituency-by-constituency. We've had quite a flood during French presidential race, though.

According to his profile page, averaged over his entire posting history, Kal's average is 16.04 posts per day, which is not that much lower than BRTD's 16.26.  And BRTD's rate has definitely gone down over time, so I imagine Kal will catch up in that metric sooner or later.
