My survey, which may clear up any murky areas of my life.
1. Michael
2. Cambridge, MA. But I do spend a few months a year in Europe.
3. A socialist, currently aligned with the Democratic party.
4. I've always admired Woodrow Wilson.
5. Huge fan of Francois Mitterand, Willy Brandt, Clement Attlee, Olof Palme, and Pierre Trudeau.
6. I've been interested since I was about 11. I've just been enthralled with the ship of state ever since.
7. Can't remember.
8. The discussions are often supremely interesting.
9. I of course have my literary interests and my sociology work. But I have an interest in animal husbrandy (oddly enough) and of course, finding my match. For someone who hasn't found one yet, I certainly do my share of comparison shopping.
10. I love Ingmar Bergman, especially Wild Strawberries and Fanny and Alexander. But the list could go on. I enjoy anything Bunuel, like Belle du Jour, and I also have my favorite American movie, Rosemary's Baby.
11. I have my favorites from the grand opera, like O Mio Babbino Caro, Un Bel Di, Vissi d'Arte, and Viens Malika. Then there's always Send in the Clowns.
12. That's about it.

3. Democratic-Republican (well...Democrat)
4. A tie. Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt

7. After the 2000 election I searched the web for detailed results of not only the 2000 election but all past U.S. Presidential elections. I was very disappointed not to find any sites, and then was OVERJOYED when I found this website. Although, I have visited this website at least once or twice a month since 2000, I didn't really pay attention to the forum :( Therefore, I didn't become a member until there was the NEW forum just this year.
8. The statistics, and now that I'm a frequent visitor and poster at the forums...then I'd have to say the FORUMS :)
9. History, movies, video games (yes I'm a dork), reading (occasionally) and traveling (been to over 15 countries, 5 continents, and 45 States.)
10. Dan's Top 5 movies: It's a Wonderful Life, Citzen Kane, The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, and Casablanca. I also like the Star Wars films, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy and much, much more. I have a list of all my favorite movies. If anyone cares to see (and I doubt it) let me know ;) lol

We got relagated last season and almost set up a record for most defeats in a row...
We're doing better now, but then we are stuck in the 1st Divison now...

WHY?

I am supposing that you mean why I would vote for the dem nominee, and the answer would then be two main reasons which contradict each other (the reason for the consistency quote).

1. I am genuinely worried about parts of the christian right and the neo-conservatives. I am not confident they have the common sense to see when to back off and when to keep away from the big button. To me some of these people come off as fanatics and they are running the risk of alienating the entire world.

2. I don't trust GWB. I know this will get his supporters here come down on me, so please don't kill me. He doesn't strike me as genuine, there is just too much money and connections everywhere. He is saying very much the same things as Tony Blair, but Blair conveys an image of actually believing in it. I am aware that this could be really unfair and a lot of things point at it being an unfair judgement, but then again it all comes down to gut feeling.

3. And, yeah, also he let down free trade which was the main reason for my favoring him in the last election.

A)  Christian Right and Neo-conservatives are two VERY different things so its not like they are working together for eeevil or anything.  Most full-Christian righters are angry with the Bush administration for its tacit support of gay rights and many populists don't like the Iraq war.  Most neocons think that the christian right just gets in the way too much :)

B) The vast majority of the Republican party is comprised of moderates, moderate-conservatives, and 'normal' conservatives and libertarians.  We aren't as whacko as the European media would have you believe.  Ok some of us are, but most of us arent :)

So you'd trust Howard Dean?  I guess that is more of a personal decision as to whether you trust someone or not.  But I will tell you that from my perspective the #1 reason to vote for President Bush is because I DO trust him.  I trust that he does what he does because of his faith and conviction.  Both parties have leaders who have business connections and many of these are suspect (don't get me started on Linda Daschle!) so you shouldn't single out Bush.

My point wasn't that neo-conservatives and the christian right are the same thing and I know that not all republicans are whackos! I just don't trust a lot of the people around Bush to say "Hey, wait a minute we can't do this". I got the feeling that they wouldn't stop at anything. The intrusions of the state into individuals personal freedoms like those prisoners on Cuba..., I just don't like it.

Well, maybe so. It just seems more pronounced in Bush, but as I said is not really logical I just feel a strong inclination against him, that's all.

I agree Dean would be a bit of a mothful, and Iäm not sure I would have the moral strength to vote for him (then again I'm not allowed to vote, so...).

Dude, you aren't a socialist, get a blue icon :)

You're right I'm not a socialist! If I can handle the embarassement I might well change my mind...:)

Well, there is another thing though! I believe it's important with changes in power. The GOP is becoming a little too dominant and that isn't healthy.

TOO DOMINANT??? AIEEE!!!  We endure 140 years of Democrats controlling EVERYTHING and now that we are catching up and control the majority of legislatures, governorships, congress, and the Presidency (all of which the Dems had before 1994) you are saying that we are too dominant!  *has a heartattack*  ARRRGH! Let us catch our breaths for a moment then we will talk about dominance! EEEEE!

Here in Tennessee, we and our dominant selves are desperately trying to oust a corrupt Democrat regime in our state house and senate that has been in place since.... well... since forever.  I don't even think we had GOP control of the legislature during reconstruction! Democrats fought our attempts to open up and reform the legislature along with having recorded votes in committee meetings.  We'll get 'em eventually, but it may take a few more years.

COOL. So, your dream is to run for Congress. Mine is more than a dream, I already believe I have received what I have asked for in prayer, that's the Presidency of the United States of America, AS a Conservative Democrat.

Quote

Well, maybe so. It just seems more pronounced in Bush, but as I said is not really logical I just feel a strong inclination against him, that's all.

Quote
3. And, yeah, also he let down free trade which was the main reason for my favoring him in the last election.

So you'd prefer a candidate like Howard Dean who is 100% opposed to free trade???

I agree Dean would be a bit of a mothful, and Iäm not sure I would have the moral strength to vote for him (then again I'm not allowed to vote, so...).

Dude, you aren't a socialist, get a blue icon :)

You're right I'm not a socialist! If I can handle the embarassement I might well change my mind...:)

Well, there is another thing though! I believe it's important with changes in power. The GOP is becoming a little too dominant and that isn't healthy.

Well, OK, so maybe they have been dominant, but right now things are looking pretty good right? The democrats have been doing badly in presidential elections ever since Eisenhower got in and now they are losing control of congress, there's not much left.

But I don't want to give you a heartattack so I'll backoff and not press the issue...

1. What's your name?  Doug
2. Where do you live? NJ
3. What's your political affiliation (Rep, Dem, Ind)?  Currently Rep
4. Who's your favourite President of all-time? Washington:  his keen awarness of precident established the role of the President that all others followed until FDR greatly expanded the executive branch
5. Who's your favourite international leader of all-time?  Churchill
6. How did you get interested in politics?  Organized Anti-war Discussions (Vietnam) in HS 1970, ran a voter registration drive for 18-21 yr olds in 1972 after the 26th amendment passed, was a local McGovern delegate to the CT convention in 1972
7. How did you discover this forum?  Yahoo search for info on past elections
8. What do you like most about it?
9. What are your other interests, apart from politics?
10. What's your favourite movie?  When Peggy Sue got married
11. What's your favourite song?  The long and winding road
12. Anything else you'd like to mention?
As a Democratic activist, turned independentt, turned Republican, I see the logic in the saying (for which I lack the exact quote):
If you're not a Democrat in youth, you have no heart, if you're not a Republican later, you have no brain.
I retain a desire to run for Congress some day

Zork, with your liberal background, it would be interesting to hear how you came to be a Republican.  I grew up in the post-Vietnam era, and have always had conservative instincts, so I have not actually changed my politics much as I've gotten older.  It would be interesting to hear from somebody who has.

1. What's your name?  Dave

2. Where do you live?  Connecticut

3. What's your political affiliation (Rep, Dem, Ind)?  Republican -- I vote almost entirely for the Republican nominees except on the local level.

4. Who's your favourite President of all-time?  I have a few -- Lincoln, F. D. Roosevelt, Truman, Reagan.

5. Who's your favourite international leader of all-time?  Winston Churchill / Margaret Thatcher

6. How did you get interested in politics?  I recognized at a young age that the quality of our political leadership could greatly affect the quality of my life.  I had relatives who were involved in local politics, but that didn't play a big favor since local politics is the area where my interest is lower.  It just gets too personal, and you never know who if somebody is personally involved in an issue or with a candidate, so I stay away from local politics.

7. How did you discover this forum?  A search for presidential election results.

8. What do you like most about it?  The ability to discuss issues with people who are polite and civil, and respect the opinions of others.  That is unusual for a political forum.

9. What are your other interests, apart from politics?  Cars, sports, finance, architecture

10. What's your favourite movie?  I have a few -- Caddyshack is up there, so is Fast Times at Ridgemont High.  Even as an adult, I still like crude adolescent male humor best.

11. What's your favourite song?  I have a few of those.  Stairway to Heaven is up there, a real classic.  Sultans of Swing, by Dire Straits, is a favorite of mine.

12. Anything else you'd like to mention?  Not that I can think of.

Isn't it "Show me a man who isn't a liberal at 20 and Iw ill show you a man without a heart, show me a man who isn't a conservative at 40 and I will show you a man without a brain?

I have a few more years to salvage my brain, and I don't see it happening.

I'm not much older than you, M. I'm only 20, a college student. Remember, it's always good to be young and politically active. Having said that, there should be MORE young people at this forum, because most of the members of this forum are old fogeys who voted in every election since 1860. Many of them make Strom Thurmond look like a toddler. (Just kidding, of course) ;)

1. Chris
2. Reynoldsville, PA  (I go to school in Erie, PA so I spend most of the year up there, but I'm originally from Reynoldsville and I don't plan to move back after school, I might stay in Erie, but I'm thinking of moving south to Virginia or North Carolina)
3. Republican
4. Reagan
5. Churchill
6. I just sorta did.  My family is Republican on one side and Democrat on the other.  The Democrat side turned me off.
7. Hmmm.  Discovered the atlas first, about a year ago.  Discovered the forum a month and a half ago.
8. Don't have many friends who are political (even though I'm a Poli Sci major, so go figure).  So I like to discuss subjects and get others oppinions.
9. History, Reading, Writing (mainly political thrillers and counter-factual stories, nothing published) Baseball and Football.
10. Lord of the Rings (all three)
      Saving Private Ryan
      Gettysburg
      Patton
11. Don't know, really.
12. Nothing really.  You can ask if you want to know.

P.S.  This reminds me of a dating website LOL

I love counter-factual histories! (political thrillers too, but that's not as unusual and hence less interesting.) Btw, it seems Churchill and LOTR comes up rather often here. What does that say about us? :)

Wasn't Churchill half-American?

I love counter-factual histories! (political thrillers too, but that's not as unusual and hence less interesting.)

For a combination of both, I recommend Fatherland by Robert Harris. An excellent counterfactual thriller, in case you haven't read it already.

Oh! I've read it and loved it! (I epsecially liked the cover, with an EU-flag and a Swastika flag. Unfair but fun.) Have you read Archangel by Harris? I thought that was great as well.

Unfortunately, I haven't read Archangel. What's it about?

An American or British (I can't remember which right now) historian is visiting Russia in the 90s, and hears about Stalin's notebook. He starts searching for it, but is rivaled by die-hard stalinists. Something very unexpected then develops, reavealing dark secrets...

I can't really tell you much about it, though, since it would ruin the reading. :) Still, I found it highly enjoyable. It was one of those books which I was stupid enough to lend a friend and never got back. :(

You're welcome, hope you will find it and enjoy it. When it comes to borrowing books I am being slightly hypocritical. It has happened that I have borrowed books and not returned them. It is more due to a wandering mind and being a bad organizer than anything else.

Thank you for the welcome. Hawaii has some of the most wonderful people on Earth, but is an unusual place politically. The people here have had a long history of being treated like children. First, the Hawaiian monarchy was strong and paternalistic. Then, the Boston missionaries came in and pretty much treated the Hawaiians like lost sheep that needed correction. Then the sugar barons set up plantation systems and company towns that ruled the workers from cradle to grave.

Naturally, most people here are enamored of the Nanny State, having been babied for much of their history. In the last election, there was one candidate whose ad flat out said, "Vote for so-and-so, she will take care of us"!

The unions are very powerful; one reason is that the unions were one of the strongest supporters of Statehood. The large land and business owners were quite content to run their businesses without Federal workplace safety and other rules, and the workers saw that with Statehood they would have stronger Federal protections at the workplace.

Also, Asian businessmen were excluded from the Republican Party (Hawaii started out as a Republican stronghold!) because of the racism of the 50’s. The Democrats took advantage of the situation and welcomed the Asians, thus creating a political power base when these Asian businessmen became economically powerful.

Hawaii will almost always vote Democrat in the national elections. Our Republican Governor is a liberal Republican, and as many of you political junkies know, state and national politics can frequently be very different.

1. Brendon
2. San Francisco
3. Republican.
4. Teddy Roosevelt or Thomas Jefferson
5. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V of Ghent
6. The 2000 election really sparked me.
7. I was looking for county-by-county maps/results of the 2000 election, and USelection atlas was the place. I visited the site for about two or three years until discovering the forums about a month ago.
8. The maps of course! Oh and the forum.
9. Piano, History (specifically 16th century European History, East European History, American History, and historical mapping), Guitar, Vocals (okay Music overall), bodybuilding, linguistics... oh I don't know.
10. Hmm.. Savior with Dennis Quaid was good... Gattaca was also good, and To Catch a Theif is a classic. The Torn Curtain was also very good... I'm not sure.
11. Oh it's always changing because I like Rock music. Currently my favorite song is Until You're Reformed by Chevelle. What would I play on my funeral? Probably Norah Jones singing The Tennessee Waltz or And So it Goes by Billy Joel. Old Man River is also a fantastic song. For a more pianist song, I really like Rondo Cappriciosso by Felix Mendelsohnn.
12. I hate you.

That's not true. If it wern't for him the council of Trent would have never happened. Why do you think he invaded Rome? Sure, some high school textbooks say it was because of Clement's support for Francis, but it also had to do with the fact that Clement kept refusing to get the council going. Charles was an extremely influencial leader who tried very hard to unite the Protestants and Catholics.

I'm scared to ask which one.

also, I saw Iron maiden several times in concert back in high school.  They rock.  what a great show.  I didn't even know those old farts were still around, though.

My english teacher in the eleventh grade let us play an Iron Maiden album and then we discussed it with respect to what we had been studying.

1. What's your name? Kevin Lamoreau
2. Where do you live? Manchester, Maine, USA
3. What's your political affiliation (Rep, Dem, Ind)? Dem
4. Who's your favourite President of all-time? my idealistic side says Woodrow Wilson, my dark side says Bill Clinton and my in-between side says FDR.
5. Who's your favourite international leader of all-time? seriously, Jesus Christ.  non-seriously, Homer Simpson (he was Sanitation Commissioner of Springfield for a little over a month).
6. How did you get interested in politics? in most election years from 1988 (when I was in second grade) on I became a little more interested and my interest lasted for a little longer and started a little earlier until by 2000 I was deeply interested cycle-round.  I began actively studying past election results and Maine election law in 2000, although recently I find I spend more time imagining different scenarios than actively researching.  But I minored in Political Science in college and feel that those courses have given me knowledge to compliment my self-tought political knowledge.  I'm really interested in redistricting and was blessed to live in a state where redistricting happened two years later than most states, so that I could follow redistricting in the rest of the nation first and then follow Maine's redistricting.
7. How did you discover this forum?  I discovered the Atlas from a link from Politics1 sometime in 2001, and first checked out the old forum in late August or early September of that year.
8. What do you like most about it?  At first, the maps were by far the favorite part of this site, and my interest in the forum was largely in the what-if scenarios and weird questions like electoral vote combinations by elector by state from 1789-1800, but now I'm largely interested in the international elections discussion on the forum, although I've noticed that I'm mostly interested in the "European" elections (including and especially Canada; perhaps there's some ethnocentrism going on).
9. What are your other interests, apart from politics? maps (surprise, surprise), making up songs (I don't play an instrument and can't write music, but that doesn't stop me from singing, and sometimes friends will play along).  I used to be very interested in military history (not the battles, but the expansion and contraction or elimination of various nations, which one can also map out a lot).
10. What's your favourite movie? a tie between two very different movies, Rocky (no, not the horror picture show or the one with Bowinkle) and Dave (the Democratic party needs a candidate like that, and no John Kerry isn't it, although he may pull it off).
10.5 (halfway between 10 and 11, favorite music and action segment in a movie or whatever you call it).  the Rocky theme in Rocky and Rocky II, particularly the latter.
11. What's your favourite song? Celebrate Good Times ("Woo Who").
12. Anything else you'd like to mention? What more can I say?

among other things, but yes, home of the giant worms.

they are both heavily rural. I love Gippsland because every January I go down to my uncles property there, go canoeing, 4WDing, umm...well thats about all the activity. But its heaps of fun to relax in the country.

I chose Davenport Iowa because there is a town in Tasmania called Davenport. I was thinking about Melbourne, FL but it was too obvious ;)

BTW, Tasmania is nice-but everyone there has two heads.

You never heard...  "Cat scratch fever..." ?

Ah, my favourite Ted Nugent song. Like Angus said, brings to mind mullets and Alabama at sundown. Well, something like that. I'm paraphrasing. Anyway, I've heard of all the stuff you mentioned - never had much time for Queen, to be honest, but then I'm more into punk rock as far as 70s music is concerned... and how anyone could have lived through the 80s and never hear of Iron Maiden is simply beyond me...... (pelts tomatoes at Boss Tweed.)

also, I saw Iron maiden several times in concert back in high school.  They rock.  what a great show.  I didn't even know those old farts were still around, though.

My english teacher in the eleventh grade let us play an Iron Maiden album and then we discussed it with respect to what we had been studying.

Heh, it was a joke. :)

Well Well Well....I don't pretend that I have enjoyed you trick.

I always wondered how you had posted at 3-6 am. I thought that you had had night shift or something in Iowa's night.

And you "voted" for John Edwards in the primary!

You should add "I'm from Australia" note to you profile. It would be fair. There is still lot of people who think that you are from Iowa.

But it's nice that we have also the active Australian member. Internationalism does only good for the forum.

I'd hope everybody else had their real profile. No more tricks!

Holy Hell:  that's awesome.  How'd you find out about it?

I was wasting some time sitting in the studio while my friend was hosting a college radio show.  He was playing a whole load of really obscure stuff, including a few songs by Soulwax, who I'd never heard of.  This song came on and blew me away.  After another few listens I decided it was my new favorite song.  That was five years ago, and it still is.

I take it you've heard it?

Yup.  Most people (even those who know of the commercial sailing industry) don't realize that there are special licenses required top-side for those who actually navigate through those waters due to their conditions.  Definitely a unique body of water.  Fortunately, I've never lost anyone up there, which is wierd since that body of water has the higher level of risk for commercial shippers than the Atlantic and Pacific.  Gordon wrote one hell of a tribute for them.
