Title: Blast from the Past: Martin O'Malley
Post by: Beet on April 18, 2015, 01:49:53 PM
Quote
Some on the left would love to pretend that groups such as the Democratic Leadership Council, the party's leading centrist voice, aren't needed anymore... But for Democrats, taking the center for granted next year would be a greater mistake than ever before...

Contrast the collapse of a conservative president with the success of the last centrist president. Bill Clinton ran on an agenda of sensible ideas that brought America a decade of peace and prosperity. He was the only Democrat to be elected and reelected president in the past seven decades, and he left office more popular than almost any other president in recent memory.

August 7, 2007. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/06/AR2007080601158.html)

Not a bad editorial in some ways, actually.

Yes, O'Malley has always been of the "center" wing. He also repeats the myth that the DLC helped Democrats in the 1990s, which is not true.

But he's our progressive savior from Hillary. :(

This may haunt him in the primaries, he was a part of the DLC.

Didn't he also endorse Hillary over Obama in 2008?

Not only did he endorse Hillary, he was one of her very early backers.

What a flip floopper.

No wonder Walter Mitty decided to abandon that unprinciples weasel and back Lincoln Chaffee instead.

Not only did he endorse Hillary, he was one of her very early backers.

At the time, it was too soon in his gubernatorial career for him to run, and he probably looked at the rest of the field and noted it consisted of:

A Senator in the middle of his first term
A one term senator who was on the 2004 losing ticket
Two liberal loons (Kucinich and Gravel)
Two candidates who he may have liked but who he knew had no chance at the nomination (Biden and Dodd)

So, that left Richardson and Hillary, so he endorsed the better GE candidate (Hillary). It wasn't a full-throated endorsement, just supporting the candidate who obviously looked like "the best of a bad field" at that early point.

Supporting Martin O'Malley is stupid.

Look at John Edwards, moderate DLC Senator to hope of the left-wing of the Democratic party.  That was a move purely out of convenience and ambition.  In the words of Holden Caufield, he was a big phoney and so is Martin O'Malley.

If you want to seem different and unique, buy a pet snake or something.

Makes me wonder if he's just a stalking horse.
