Title: POST HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE CONSIDERED AS A MOD Post by: Bacon King on July 19, 2015, 11:01:45 AM Please note that there is no official need for a new moderator - it is entirely possible we might replace Sawx with another current moderator - but the fact is that literally a dozen people have already made their interest known to be considered as sawx's replacement. Since this is already happening anyway, I would like to open the door for everyone to apply even if they aren't comfortable with sending unsolicited PM's to moderators about it.
Serious applicants only please. Applicants, list reasons why you would be a good moderator (like a resume or something) to distinguish yourself. Also if anyone knows any reason why any candidate would be a terrible moderator, please let us know. I would rather not see a repeat of the last incident. In addition, I have no desire to throw around my weight or anything like that just for the sake of it. I would not become a sideshow like we've seen with a number of former moderators on Atlas.

I also don't quite get how to improve posting "quality" without seeming to posters who get nicked for poor quality (a highly subjective concept), as being unduly heavy handed, and dare I say it, "fascist." There is discussion about overall policy, but naturally, mods don't want to be told too much how to manage their boards either, so that has to be it seems to me a balancing test. My goal is not to further some idea of modfascism, but to help this forum that I like very much operate smoothly and without chaos. I've been registered for a little over a year, and lurked for a while before then, and in that time I feel that I have developed the proper wisdom needed to run the 2016 board to it's fullest.
I hope you consider my application, and know that I hold this forum (yes, even the 2016 board) close to my heart and would try to do whatever I can to help keep it filled with stimulating debate and conversation. Moreover, I'm an active poster and can be expected to spend a reasonable amount of time on this forum, sad as it may be. I serve as an "op" in the forum's irc channel and my usage of authority has been well-received (to my knowledge). In the real world, I am entering my second semester chairing an organization's judicial board, and my third overall term on it. It's a thankless job, and both my decision to run for re-election and the fact that I won should be indicative of my commitment and the respect I have from my organizational peers. I also serve or have served in other authority roles such as secretary, pledge class president, head of risk management, student government senator, etc. In terms of what policies I would like to enact as a moderator, I would mainly try to focus on quickly addressing obvious socks and pornography spammers, the latter of which represent a real threat to one's ability and/or willingness to function as a poster here. Beyond that, I think we need to draw a few consistent lines in the sand regarding acceptability. Where these lines actually are isn't as much of my concern as how predictable it is that they will be enforced. Aside from the clear and present enemies to forum life, I do believe we should exercise restraint in actions until it's clear what is going on and how best to respond. I've been a member of the community for nearly three years now and have not caused nearly as much trouble as some of our more prominent members. Past moderators here have been personality-based ones that are prone to attracting attention to themselves while on the job, and that can be a detriment for them and the community at-large. An effective mod needs to have a balanced temperament and not dish out on their grudges once they acquire power. I would hope that my reputation on the forum has reflected that; I'm not known for starting fights and I believe that I get along well with most on here. Regarding past moderating experience, I have been a mod or admin in several forums over the years, including a relatively large one of over 6,000 members. I have also moderated several chats on places like Mibbit, Xat, and Skype. Everyone knows that malicious posters must be handled swiftly, but they aren't usually as much of a problem as the quality of posts. The 2016 board doesn't need as many celebratory circlejerks for hacks and their candidates, nor does the Individual Politics board need rankings of all presidents every two months. I regularly browse these sections, so I know what's going on there. Redundancy and spam have hurt the forum, and I would mainly focus on curbing those things. Everything I have heard from the Modcave suggests that the team is disjointed and works slowly, so I would also do my part to facilitate discussion and bring unity as much as I can. Thank you. Actually, experience-wise: for two years now I've shown 6-12 year old children around nature reserves and museums. Perfect experience IMO for modding the 2016 board! I have been a member on Atlas for 4 years now, and have been relatively uncontroversial in my time here. I generally spend a lot of time on Atlas and would be able to spend time on the forum. The fact that my timezone is different to others would be a consideration to diversify the moderation team and also help fix potential issues if they happen overnight in the States. I have a lot of exposure to most of the Atlas boards that have regular posts and also to forums in general and how they work. I don't have the personal issues that sawx did to see his collapse, and it's unlikely that I'll be getting into bullsh**t that makes me look bad. So yeah. I've been a member of the community about a year and a half now, and since joining I've gained a deeper understanding of how the Atlas works.
The moderation team needs a breath of fresh air to ward off any perceptions of insularity. I like to think I can provide that change while also looking to uphold a fair, consistent policy of moderation guided by Dave's directives and the terms of service. Moderators should also be meaningful contributors. The academic value of this website is its defining and strongest asset. Moderators should support increasing the academic value of the forum in order to continuing to set us apart. Additionally, if chosen as moderator, I'd like to follow the lead of some past moderators in having a fairly transparent moderation policy. Giving explanations behind actions will go a long way to rehabilitating public opinion surrounding moderators. I believe that the controversial bans and decisions made the moderation team have been kosher and good for the site, but I think the public affairs aspect could have been handled much better. As a moderator, I would draw upon two examples of big decisions made by the team in my handling of moderation issues. The banning of the Update was a huge and dramatic change to our forum community and, more directly, to the Forum Community board itself. BK handled the new policy very openly and explained the decision, resulting in a stunningly low amount anger and dissent within the community. Sure, there was opposition, but it was nothing compared to the epic levels of butthurt brought on by the long, drawn out process of banning Opebo, which still draws criticism today. TL;DR: As a moderator, I'd like to be a breath of fresh air that really places an emphasis on increasing the academic value of the forum while also looking to handle moderation policy more out in the open with explanations and reasoning, like the Mods did with the Update ban, instead of insular, controversial, sporadic decision making. EDIT: Forgot to mention, I don't have any major rivalries or "enemies" or whatever to lead to a lot of personal drama. I've done a pretty effective job at separating my political views and personal relationships. I've also been active here for nearly a decade and have pretty much kept my nose clean. I think I'm detached enough to remain objective. Otherwise, Turk and CrabCake are the obvious best choices. I should add that I do work full time and so have to fulfill lots of responsibilities and deal with managing people all day there. That serves to illustrate both that I have a necessary skillset.. but also that I'm not drowning in free time. I was absent and had opposed it prior to being absent, and it was really a Dave intervention, that brought about a basic consensus sans myself because of a concern that opebo's antics were threatening his business model. But unlike you, I accept the ban decisions that are made in good faith, even if I oppose them. One does not always get one's way, and you win some, and lose some. I opposed the CCSF banning too, for that matter, although I considered it a difficult and close case. Such is life. I wonder how many really still want to be a Mod after the recent unpleasantness? • I'm on Atlas way too much and often overnight (EST), which seems to be a low point for most moderators. So I'd essentially be filling a gap. • I don't hide my political affiliation, but I would be fair to every poster, regardless of their politics. • Following the rules by the books (with some reasonable flexibility) is how I conduct any role I fill. • I don't think I've had any reported posts of the nearly 1,000 I've made so far. People may dislike my views, but they can't say I violate any rules. Also, I always have an instinct for knowing when something violates the rules and when it doesn't. I am also often awake between 11 PM and 3 AM. My preference is for the econ board, since I have an econ major and read many econ blogs regularly. I have no tolerance for spammers or death threats. I am also an R-MI, like Cathcon, who was also made a mod via applying here. I desire for this forum to be great.

I can be fair and impartial. My main flaw, in terms of moderating, is that I understand both sides of an argument/discussion/point and be a bit overly compassionate in terms of responses to things. I would intend to moderate with a sturdy hand, however. My guiding philosophy would probably be similar to Torie's - minimal intervention to all non-trolls/obvious bad post(ers/s). Finally, I believe I can react appropriately to situations. I appreciate any consideration I receive.
