Identified as a Rockefeller Republican during his youth, but became alienated from the party by 1992 due to the increasing influence of the Religious Right. Supported McCain in 2000 because of his more moderate stances. Finally made the decision to formally switch parties in 2007 because of his disgust with George W. Bush's administration, and became an enthusiastic Obama supporter.
Voter 2: College liberal who supported McGovern in 1972, but grew much more conservative after graduating, getting a job and starting a family. Has mostly supported Republicans subsequently, but thought Bill Clinton was a good President (hence voting for him in 1996) and voted for Obama in 2008 because of the economy. Voter 3: Non-ideological anti-establishment voter who strongly dislikes Obama. Voter 4: Working-class, socially conservative Southern Democrat. Supported JFK, LBJ, and Wallace, but like many of similar background broke party ranks to vote for Nixon in 1972. Enthusiastically supported Southerner Jimmy Carter both times he ran, but didn't bother to vote in 1984 and tepidly supported Dukakis solely out of partisan loyalty. A veteran of the Vietnam War, this voter loathed Bill Clinton as a draft dodger, so much so that he voted for Bush and Dole instead. Became so alienated from the party that he didn't bother to vote for Gore or Kerry. In 2008, he was impressed by Obama and decided to support him, to the surprise of many friends and family members. By 2012, however, he had soured on the President and didn't bother to vote. He detests Hillary Clinton as corrupt and dishonest, and admires Trump for "telling it like it is." |
