Title: What would the Labour Party in Britain be like if it had primaries ala the US?

Given the ascension of Corbyn as the leader of the Labour Party in the UK, whom apparently most Labour MP's would rather not be leader, I was musing what the Labour Party would be like, and its program be like, if MP candidates were selected in primaries the way it is done in the US (which folks registered by party, or perhaps a jungle primary ala California or whatever), and the MP's, and MP's alone, selected their leader, the way the Tories do it? How would that change the culture of the party, the diversity of its MP's, and their basic ideological orientation?
