Title: What would bring Trump down?
Post by: PeteB on February 28, 2016, 05:03:28 PM
Since there is a growing belief that Trump will be the nominee, what types of revelations, if any, do you think would bring him down? You can pick up to two choices.

Personally I can only see criminal charges or personal scandals (especially ones which would tarnish his leadership and blue collar-empathy image) doing him in.

Barack Obama running for a third term. Granted, he would bring down anyone in this field.

Certainly nothing involving his personal life. I think a debate that made him seem weak and unprepared would hurt him, though.

Apologizing publicly for alleged sexism/racism. It's not going to happen and he can't be stopped at this point, though.

None of these will stop him from becoming the Republican nominee -but they will seriously damage him in the general election.  The Clinton campaign will not treat him with kid-gloves the way his GOP rivals have up until now.  It will be a scorched earth campaign from the get-go.

The Anti-Trump GOP (which is a clear majority of rank and file voters), completely uniting around Rubio, Cruz, or Kasich.

Nothing, his supporters are so stupid they have no idea he's a liberal so he could say anything he wants and still keep his support. Only hope is for everyone but Rubio to drop out and hope that everyone goes to him.

This post is a perfect encapsulation of why Trump is winning!

1. Derision and condescension for his supporters.
2. Junk conventional wisdom. If a candidate drops out, Rubio HAS to get their votes! Right guys?

Yes, people who support Trump should be treated like the morons they are. The angry old people saying "no government healthcare" now go "yeah, Trump said single-payer healthcare, we need this, make America great again!".

And I said the only way it COULD happen is IF they go to Rubio. Didn't say they would, just that it would be the only way. Oh well, it's going to be annoying having Hillary for at least 4 years but it'll be hard to understand how SHOCKED people will be when it happens.

Trump actually does have a legitimate shot at winning the general. Remember, he was never supposed to be a top contender for the nomination or even come close to winning something, and look where he is now.

Rubio might even do worse than Trump in the general. Kasich and Trump are the most electable Republicans running.

Once a Trump supporter, always a Trump supporter, it seems.

Except that Trump is not only limited in support to elderly white women, you arrogant half-wit.

The people know Trump is a flip-flopper, they aren't stupid like you and your ilk think they are. They don't care anymore. I remember the people like you, the morons who backed Santorum and Newt, whining about how Romney was "not conservative" enough. Well, be careful what you wish for.

Also, they don't care about TRUE CONSERVATIVES anymore. They keep getting burnt by them. They want a leader who will tell the evangelicals, illegals, Israelis, Russians, ISIS, Liberals, and everyone else they don't like to stick it. Paul Ryan won't do that. Senator Lavenous won't do that. Trump will.

They are tired of hearing about Reagan. Most of them are old enough to remember Reagan, and they remember that the reality of Reagan was different then the narrative. To hell with Reagan, I'm glad he is dead, and I am glad the cult you and @AG_Conservative and Rick Wilson and company built around him is dead too. The people are waking up and a revolution is underway. And a revolution needs two things to be complete: dancing and a reign of terror.

And now it is our turn for terror. We are coming to take our party back. It's our party now, bitch.

A simple 1 hour documentary on land acquisitions surrounding Trumps golf course resort in Scotland mixed with an analysis of Trump University fraud-based law suits. Some hot blonde crying ireconcilably blubbering that she lost her entire future after "believing in Trump".

Throw in some illegal workers and some upset guy in Florida who lost $345,000 buying a Trump accredited apartment, and you are nearly there.

Every piece of footage of Trump should be in slow motion and be in black and white.

Then put some gloomy classical music in E Flat minor over the top with a deep voiced male speaking horrible truths about Donald Trump. Show some slowly zoomed pictures of the KKK and a couple of muslim women and children having trouble with their bags at the airport.

Finish with a couple of foul mouthed ex-Presidents of Mexico comparing him to Hitler and a high ranking GOP member who is happy to say his removal of children from their deported families is akin to the SS in WWII.

Finish with a 60 second pleading message from the Pope.

5 more minutes on high, and serve with roast potato and pumpkin, rosemary and mint sauce.

No

What you guys don't understand is that Trump does best with voters that describe themselves as moderates and liberals. Republicans have been constantly attacking Trump for being close friends with the Clintons, yet his supporters still love him (because they are moderates and liberals). If anything, hugging Obama would help Trump a lot. Remember when Chris Christie was the front runner and he gave Obama a hug during Hurricane Sandy? That actually didn't hurt him amongst Republicans all that much and it actually helped him with independents. I remember when the media was going on and on about how Christie was a sane Republican who hugged Obama (which was a sign that he was willing to compromise with the Democrats, according to the media). I assume that the media would feel the same way towards Trump if he did this.

Trump is a full on narcissist.

All you have to do is start belittling him constantly until he flips the f**k out.  It'll probably end when he calls Hillary a c*nt on national TV.

Maybe we should create a new state out of a few in the west and call it Trumpistan. Move all the Trumptards out there and they can have their own state and charge no taxes and have no minorities or foreigners allowed. No public transportation, a wall around the entire state, single payer healthcare, etc. Leave the rest of the adults to deal with the real country. Oh, and they get no government support and can't leave.

As long as there is breath in his lungs, Trump will almost definitely win the nomination. For better or worse.

The Presidency will be a much harder task. Everything I "know" about reality says he can't do it, but Trump has made a habit of raising a middle digit to reality, turning that middle digit into a knife, and stabbing reality through the heart.

Only because too many GOP candidates treated him with kid-gloves until they realized (too late) what a threat he really was.  Had everyone gone after him last summer, he would not be where he is today.

Short of a criminal indictment, it would be hard to stop Trump without creating the elements needed for a brokered convention.  This is possible, but it would put the GOP in the position of (A) airing much dirty linen in public and (B) denying the candidate with the most popular support in the primaries and caucuses the nomination in favor of either someone who was rejected by the voters, or by a candidate that was "airlifted" into the convention to break a deadlock.

While I agree with you, I wasn't thinking so much about a process or even another candidate who could bring Trump down (although that warrants a separate discussion) :).

The intent of the poll was to see what type of revelation (if any) would affect Trump's popularity and dissuade his supporters (i.e. To the point where Trump would start hemorrhaging support)!!

A combination of this stuff might have worked during the early states.

Now the race is national, and it's too late. Before this, Trump was having to fight like an actual politician, do retail stuff that he wasn't as good at as the others, but now the race is being fought on his own turf, the national spotlight. It's over.

I'd like to think if during his acceptance speech at the convention, he said that his whole candidacy had been an elaborate joke, everyone who voted for him was racist and an idiot, he didn't actually want to be president, and he had just been running as a favor to Hillary Clinton, then his support might go down.

But I'm not sure. A speech like that, combined with completely dropping out of the race (but leaving his name on ballots) might just show he's REALLY not a politician, letting him beat Hillary in November.
