Republicans survived the Bush years remaining relatively strong in New England. Republicans survived the Bush years remaining relatively strong in New England. For a large chunk it was, but many of them just saw it as a fluke. In fact, pretty much every Republican and their mother was saying 2008 was a fluke and America would "fix their mistake" in 2012, since supposedly Americans only voted for Obama to prove they're not racist. Racist Appalachian Dixiecrats mostly bought this theory, which is why they felt comfortable voting for "the right kind of Democrat", including in 2012 when they thought Obama would lose in a landslide. But once the black guy was re-elected, all bets were off. They abandoned the anti-white hate group faster than Obama could give his victory speech.
