Last election in top 10 (or 20% with under 48 states) most Republican:

  • 2016: Wyoming, West Virginia, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Idaho, Kentucky, South Dakota, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee
  • 2012: Utah, Nebraska, Kansas
  • 2008: Alaska, Louisiana
  • 2004: Texas
  • 2000: Montana
  • 1996: Mississippi, Indiana, South Carolina
  • 1988: New Hampshire, Florida, Arizona, Nevada
  • 1976: Colorado, Vermont
  • 1972: Georgia, North Carolina (only occurrence)
  • 1968: Iowa
  • 1964: Virginia (only occurrence)
  • 1960: Maine
  • 1956: New Jersey, Connecticut, Wisconsin
  • 1948: Pennsylvania, Oregon
  • 1940: Michigan
  • 1936: Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island
  • 1932: Ohio
  • 1928: Washington, California
  • 1920: Minnesota, Illinois
  • 1916: New York
  • NEVER: Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, Hawaii

Longest current streak in R Top 10:

  • Idaho (since 1972 when 11th in huge landslide; otherwise since 1960)
  • Oklahoma, Wyoming (since 1992)
  • Utah was most Republican every election 1976 to 2004 and would qualify but for strong third party in 2016

It’s extremely plausible Missouri will soon become a regular in Republican Top 10s.

Last election in top 10 (or 20% with under 48 states) most Democratic:

  • 2016: Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, Maryland, Vermont, New York, Illinois, Washington, Rhode Island, New Jersey
  • 2012: Delaware, Connecticut
  • 2008: Maine
  • 1996: Arkansas
  • 1992: West Virginia, Minnesota
  • 1988: Iowa, Oregon
  • 1984: Pennsylvania
  • 1980: Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama
  • 1976: South Carolina, North Carolina
  • 1972: South Dakota (only occurrence; due of course to powerful “favorite son” effect)
  • 1964: Alaska (only occurrence)
  • 1956: Mississippi, Missouri
  • 1952: Louisiana, Kentucky
  • 1948: Texas, Oklahoma
  • 1944: Florida, Virginia
  • 1936: Nevada
  • 1932: North Dakota (only occurrence)
  • 1916: Colorado
  • 1896: Utah (only occurrence), Montana (only occurrence), Idaho (only occurrence)
  • NEVER: New Hampshire, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico

Massachusetts and Rhode Island were last outside the top 10 most Democratic states in 1956.
