Title: The Writers Thread
Post by: Enduro on March 14, 2017, 11:05:04 PM
I originally made this thread in Off-Topic, but after thinking it over, I think it actually belongs here.

Anyway, here is the original post of the first thread:
I decided to make this thread dedicated to writing. Post if you start a new writing project, if you get published, links to previously published works, writing technics, ways to beat the dreaded writer's block, or anything writing related.

I have a multitude of stories posted on the internet. It's mainly on AAD.

Like I said, still working on the same novel/screenplay as I have for two years.

Plenty of short stories too, and a few unfinished novels here and there (my longest one, sadly fell apart because of the subject matter)

Here on Atlas? Sure if you're comfortable.

This thread specifically? Probably not the best place.

Well there are at least three options here, 1) Off Topic threads were I post the stuff, and people read them, 2) you get some sort of AAD account or use your existing one to read it, and tell me what you think, or 3) we do nothing.

I want to discourage public sharing of original ideas, unless published. Also, only share stories with people you trust.

About to wrap the fifth book in my series. Hitting the realization that man's reach exceeds his grasp and the epic scale I've reached may be biting off more than I can chew

Yeah I echo this. Don't post anything you want to submit either.

I actually got serious about a writing project (that I first got the idea for 3 years ago) in late 2015. "Serious" in my case means that I've written barely over three chapters' worth of horrible prose that needs complete overhaul.

I am in the process of writing a novel, but with all the stuff I am dealing with now I haven't been working on it. I hope to pick it up again soon. I have already made it 130 pages in and I have a pretty clear outline of the rest of the plot in my head, so I should definitely be able to finish it.

I self-pub on Amazon and Smashwords. Tradpub didn't appeal to me

I've heard bad things about Amazon's publishing.

I usually spend a lot of time plotting it out in my head. Once I am satisfied with what I have there, I'll sit down and put 8-10 pages on paper. I have someone look over it and give suggestions. Then I redraft. I usually only do two drafts instead of three, which from what I have been made to understood is somewhat unusual.

I work best if I have a walk/ride first. It clears my head and gives birth to a lot of loose suggestions, that them develops.

You're not going to find many other publishers for self-pub with their reach. Smashwords has never impressed me. Dunno much about D2D

A lot of writing has to do with reading, so I say this:

I just got like $60 worth of books for $5. I love my library.

Every project is different; sometimes I only need one draft, some I extensively outline and rewrite.

I usually do outlines [such as chapter synposes] and character profiles and that stuff. I try to do things chapter by chapter

Although I'm fairly guilty of writing by the seat of my pants too.

I never need proper outlines to write.

Do you mean you don't write outlines, or you write the Tim Turner version of outlines?

I make stuff up as I go along. I do advance planning, and there are times I put them there as little remainders at the end while I'm writing, to remind myself that I need to add them to the story, but actual proper outlines is something I never do.

Technically the fifth. There are two spinoff prequels set in-universe too

Might as well share how much material I've completed:

~6 short stories, 2 unfinished TV pilots, a few pages of terrible stand up, 1 unfinished novella, 2 unfinished novels, 3 short film screenplays, ~20 movie outlines, and ~8 long form stories I haven't decided on a format for

Today so far I managed to write 5 new pages for my current, Polish-language project.

Still waiting for the first volume of my (written in English) book to come out. The published hinted it'll be mid-July. If you want more detail, you can PM me :P

Then again, I barely can pull 50 WPM, and it takes me ages to get even a paragraph.

If I know what I want to write, and know what I want to say, I can get a good amount of stuff done in an hour. But not as much as you can. 50 WPM? I can only dream.

I just wrote up some lyrics for a parody song....this one pretty much pokes fun at the general crappiness of Connecticut governor Dan Malloy.  To the tune of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears For Fears, here's "Everybody Wants To Run The State (Connecticut)"....best sung in a Dan Malloy-like voice!

Quote
Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while you sleep
We will find you
Acting on your worst behavior
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to run the state

It's my own desire
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide!
Help me make the most of slavery and of taxes
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to run the state

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do, I'll be at my tee time
So glad we almost made it
So sad they had to fake it
Everybody wants to run the state

I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to run the state

Say that you'll never, never, never, leave it
One headline, here, I'll read it
"Everybody wants to run the state"

What do you guys think of this? LOL!! :)
