Title: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: DKrol on April 15, 2017, 10:50:02 PM America's Pastime
The Politics of Baseball () This is a different kind of forum game that I’d like to try out. Here’s how it will work. Each player will claim one of the thirty current MLB teams and serve as their manager. It is not necessary to have a player for each team; I will sim any team that does not have a player, and new players can jump in at any point, although I cannot imagine the game working well with less than 10 players. We’ll start on November 8, 2016, the first day that free agent players can begin signing with new teams. I will publish a list of free agents (for simplicities sake, I will only include the top 100 free agents and trade targets) that will be up for grabs. This list will be updated after each round. Players will PM me their bids for free agent players and will PM other players (or myself for clubs not currently controlled by a player) with trade deals. Players may also try to entice players who announced their retirement (David Ross, David Ortiz, Mark Teixeria, Alex Rodriguez, etc.) to play another season. This could go one of three ways: 1) Player has a phenomenal season and rides off into the sunset, 2) Player has an average season, walks away to less fan-fare, 3) Player has an embarrassingly poor season, probably gets injured, and retires out of the minors. This will be determined by dice rolls and moves to entice players should be done through PM to me. Once three turns of free agency have gone by, we’ll fast-forward to April 1, 2017, the day before Opening Day. Each post from here on will constitute a week and last for about 4 days, giving me 3 days to process all the games played. This is how the regular season will play out. Each player will publish their starting lineup for that week’s games. This includes who will be the starting pitcher, who will be the main relief pitcher, who will be the closer, and the position players and their batting order. This largely will not change game-to-game, but some players may digress if they’ve been playing for 30 days in a row. Changing the starting pitcher is especially important. If the game is being played at a National League ballpark, remember that there is no DH. This requires some strategy on the part of the player to move the starting lineup around to maximize potential. Do you want to sit Hanley Ramirez for the game, or have him play 3B to keep his bat in the game? Where will your pitcher bat? As an example: Quote Boston Red Sox Starting Lineup, April 15 v. Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park 1. Dustin Pedrioa (2B) 2. Andrew Benintendi (CF) 3. Mookie Betts (RF) 4. Hanley Ramirez (DH) 5. Mitch Mooreland (1B) 6. Xander Bogaerts (SS) 7. Pablo Sandoval (3B) 8. Chris Young (LF) 9. Sandy Leon (C) SP. Chris Sale RP. Heath Hembree C. Craig Kimbrell I will determine who wins each game in a three-fold fashion. First, I will look at the FiveThirtyEight MLB projections (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-our-2017-mlb-predictions-work). Second, I will adjust the FiveThirtyEight MLB projection to account for player-made trades and roster differences, as well as adjust for hot streaks or cold streaks. Third, I will roll dice to ensure that the game does not become a statistical snooze-fest. We will follow the official 2017 MLB schedule (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/team_by_team.jsp), for simplicities sake. After each IG week, I will post a box score for each game. As an example: Quote Red Sox 5 – Tampa Bay 3. WP: Chris Sale (2-0) LP: Chris Archer (1-1) S: Craig Kimbrel (4) Scoring: Top of 3: Mitch Mooreland (BOS) 2-run homer to left. (BOS 2 – TB 0) Bottom of 3: Evan Longoria (TB) Grand Slam to center (BOS 2 – TB 4) Top of 6: Pablo Sandoval (BOS) double to right, Betts and Benintendi in to score (BOS 4 – TB 4) Top of 9: Mitch Mooreland (BOS) double to center, Pedroia in to score (BOS 5 – TB 4) Changes in starting pitcher, batting order, and position will obviously affect the outcome of the game. You can also call players up from the minors or send them down, either due to injury or bad performance. Include these decisions in your posts for the week. Speaking of injuries: There is a chance that any player will get injured at any point in time. This will be determined by a dice roll. The severity and length of the injury will be determined by the dice roll. If there are any questions, please ask. Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: DKrol on April 18, 2017, 08:07:46 PM Can I relocate a team? I hadn't thought of that. It would have to be a multi-season project, so it probably wouldn't fit within the confines of this game. And also: What roster will we use at the beginning of free agency? The one that closed 2016? Welcome to the game! Yes, we'll start off using the roster that your team was using to close out 2016. Can I relocate a team? I hadn't thought of that. It would have to be a multi-season project, so it probably wouldn't fit within the confines of this game. You can play as the Padres and state your interest to relocate, but this will only come into effect if the game lasts mutliple seasons. I'd also mention that the last time the Padres ownership changed, it cost around 800 million. So your guy would probably need to fork over a lot more cash to make that work Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: DKrol on April 23, 2017, 10:01:18 AM The first turn is open! Make sure to refer to the Free Agent/Trade Prospect list in this thread. PM me directly for all free agent deals, and for trades for players not currently on a team controlled by a player, as well as deals to try and win over previously retired players. PM other players for trades involving players on their team, but be sure to cc me in the PMs.
You can use the game thread to RP your club. You can do press releases announcing you're going after a player (although that can backfire if they don't sign with you), announcing players you've signed, or just keeping the public in the know about your ball club. I'm coming up with a lost of team needs for each of our player-controlled clubs, so maybe wait a minute until I get that up to start making your deals. Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: DKrol on May 14, 2017, 07:51:42 AM So I kind of let this die after Jaguar4Life pulled out of the game. Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: CMB222 on May 16, 2017, 09:13:41 AM I would still be interested.
Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: DKrol on July 30, 2017, 03:17:21 PM I'm going to try this one more time. If people are interested, we'd need no fewer than 5 people to get started. Any fewer than 5, and there'd be too much work on my end to make it fun/worthwhile.
I'll give a week for sign ups with a clean slate, no pre-existing claims are valid. Title: Re: America's Pastime (Info/Sign Up Thread) Post by: CMB222 on July 31, 2017, 08:23:31 PM I don't think I will this time around, but I would think one for football might get the attention and support of more people. Just a suggestion.
