Title: Liberal Justice Party HQ [Presidential Nomination]
Post by: JustinTimeCuber on May 12, 2017, 09:48:20 PM
The Liberal Justice Party is a left-wing* party in the South founded by me, JustinTimeCuber. Although we tend to support most of the same goals as the Labor party, and I am personally a member of the Labor party, we are not a faction thereof; as Labor is a national party and the LJP is a regional party down South.

Quote
Support freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
This means allowing dissenting views from people on any side of any issue, as long as you aren't directly inciting violence. This also means the freedom to practice whatever religion you choose or none at all without fear of persecution, and the freedom to protest the government, assuming you do so peacefully.

Opposing discrimination and bigotry.
Even though we support the right to hold and express hateful or bigoted views, we will strongly oppose anyone who does so, of course in a non-violent manner. This includes fighting bigoted views against racial and ethnic minorities, LGBT+ people, women, religious minorities including the non-religious, and anyone else who might fear discrimination.

Universal healthcare.
The LJP believes that all human beings are entitled to basic healthcare needs as a birthright, and support enacting a single-payer system in the South.

Stop mass incarceration.
We should not have more people in jail than China, a country with more than four times our population and with a tendency for authoritarian governance. This means we should end mandatory minimum sentences and end the war on drugs.

Make the minimum wage a living wage.
Although it would be nice if everyone had a good-paying job, this isn't realistically the case. Some people are stuck in low-skill jobs that pay minimum wage, and that wage isn't enough to afford many basic necessities in most areas in the South right now. Ideally, we would have a living wage mandated at a local basis using the most precise data available. In some areas this could be $11 per hour, in some areas it could be $15.

Stop climate change and invest in renewable energy.
Climate change is a major worldwide problem, and the South should do what it can, along with the other regions and the rest of the world, to transfer away from fossil fuels and create high-paying clean energy jobs.

Expand workers' rights.
The LJP would like to see paid vacation and sick leave as well as maternity and paternity leave mandated by law.
Bylaws

Article 1 - Party
1. The official name of this party shall be the Liberal Justice Party of the South, abbreviated as LJP.
2. All registered members of the party shall be voting members, and may vote whenever the Party holds a vote, if they are registered when the vote is called.
3. The Party's official stances are found in the Liberal Justice Party Platform.
Article 2 - Leadership
1. The leader of the Party shall be referred to as the Chair.
2. Elections for Chair happen whenever the position is vacant, or after the current Chair has served for four months after his or her previous election to the position, or when two-thirds of voting members call for an election.
3. Elections for Chair shall be administered by the Dean, defined as whichever voting member has been a member of the Party for the longest. If the Dean has not posted more than four times on the Atlas Forum in the seven days before an election is to be called, any other voting member may administer the election unless one-third of voting members object.
4. There shall be a 24-hour nomination period followed by 48 hours for voting in elections for Chair.
The winner shall immediately become Chair after being certified as such. Only voting members of the Party shall be eligible for nomination or to be Chair.
5. The Chair shall be the presiding officer of general LJP activity.
Article 3 - Endorsements
1. The Party may hold a vote on whom to endorse in any Southern regional election or in any Federal election.
2. The Chair shall determine if an endorsement is necessary, and if so, shall preside over the endorsement vote.
3. All declared candidates for the office in question shall be included on the ballot.

Glad to see areas where we can work in a bipartisan manner to achieve our goals and to promote societal progress.

New temporary bylaws until I get around to making real ones

Fremont passed a very similar proposal into law a while back, essentially indexing the minimum wage to the cost of living by county. I'm glad to see other regions following our lead. :)

Order! Order! The Liberal Justice Party shall now make an endorsement for President of the Atlasian Republic! 48 hours for nominations. Why? 'Cause I said so!

Current voting members JTC, VPH, W. Midlander, and Tricks33 are eligible to make a nomination.

e: to clarify, nominations are open for President and Vice-President.

The Liberal Justice Party voted unanimously, with three votes for each, and one not voting, to endorse Clyde1998 for President and Siren for Vice President!

Eternal Emperor (temporary position)
JustinTimeCuber
Not to interrupt the vote, but perhaps we should vote for a chair (and maybe a vice-chair, but we're so small anyway). Unless we want to wipe out the Eternal Emperorship with no replacement and be a non-hierarchical party. (We do need a leader to call votes to do things like issue endorsements)

Btw: JTC For LJP Chair

Thank you to JustinTimeCuber for nominating me for the chairship and Peebs for seconding my nomination. I thank them and VPH for voting for me for the position. Together we can become a major force in Southern politics pushing a progressive agenda that works for all of us and not just the wealthy few.

I'm hereby resigning as your party chair. With the school year back in full swing I cannot do justice to this position, and to the regional party. I'm hereby naming Peebs as interim chair, and entrusting her to hold an election for Chair as soon as possible. I also fully support her for the position, once an election is held for the chairship.

Thank you,
West_Midlander

I didn't deregister, so I'm still a member of LJP.

Officially nominating Peebs.

At this brave hour in the history of our republic, it is as much a privilege to request the nomination of this assembly for President of Atlasia as it would be an honor to receive it.

In the course of two years' service to the Republic of Atlasia — as regional legislator, senator and president pro tempore, presiding officer of the Constitutional Convention, officer of the cabinet, president, and prime minister — I have diligently and consistently shown my commitment to the ideas and principles upon which the Liberal Justice Party is founded.

An early and outspoken voice for the rights of LGBTQ+ citizens, I defended federal civil rights projections before the Chamber of Delegates when the far-right attempted to repeal those rights last winter. With then-Senator Ted Bessell, I wrote the Bessell-Truman Transgender Rights Act in Fremont — legislation that guarantees equal rights for transgender citizens and that has become a model for civil rights protections around the country.

My tenure as prime minister has seen passage of legislation to double the number of public defenders in Fremont, issue badge cameras to all uniformed police officers, adopt a local living wage, invest in renewable energy and infrastructure, and to promote the cause of working Atlasians by supporting organized labor. This I have done, not by cloak-and-dagger intrigue or party-line votes, but with support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle — Federalists and Laborites; liberals, moderates, and conservatives — working with men like R. Fayette, R. Pryor, Speaker Yankee, and dozens more to put the welfare of the Atlasian people before party interest.

I have begun this campaign upon three principles: pursuing a proactive and internationalist foreign policy (by addressing threats before they become emergencies, working with our allies to win and keep the peace, and strengthening ties with the rest of the world – as with a Canadian Common Market – to make the game more interesting and promote our interests abroad); building an economy that works for everyone (by passing the local living wage, finally making AtlasRail a reality, and supporting a progressive and pro-growth tax code); and keeping the executive branch active and engaged in the governing process.

I imagine you'll hear promises from other candidates pledging to do all this and more — which is why it's important to remember that, while anyone can say they will speak for all Atlasians, I actually have. I don't need to make excuses for breaking my word, because I didn't break my word. At this hour, on this bank and shoal of time, we need a president who will actually do something to pass sensible, liberal policies in Nyman — my record and my platform show that I am such a candidate.

Thank you.

While it is might seem most unorthodox for me to speak before the Liberal Justice Party, I applaud the fact you include all candidates when it comes to deciding who to endorse, and I think the least I can do is to make an honest case to you in respect of your nomination process and the civic exercise of running for the Presidency.

Ladies and gentlemen, I did not come here to pretend to be something I’m not.

For obvious reasons I cannot declare myself to be a proper supporter of some of the causes you support. Having said that, I am there with you when it comes to the defense of freedom of speech and expression, or the fight against discrimination, or the promotion of policies that conserve, preserve and promote our environment. And if elected President, I will look forward to a spirited, detailed and civil debate on the issues which separate us or cause disagreement as I try to promote the points of view in which I passionately believe in.

I have often complained in the past few days about what I think is a harmful dynamic at the moment in Atlasia: the so called “Nyman consensus” or “echo-chamber consensus”, which has seen our federal parties grow closer on several issues to the point in which debate on many critical issues has been reduced, and activity with it. I believe Atlasia is due for some significant change, and yes, I believe a significant part of that is taking policy into a different direction and closer to the center-right. We will have significant disagreements on that, I’m sure of it. But I hope you may agree with me when I say that it is my belief that we need effective, experienced and active leadership which is combined with a far-reaching vision for our future and the empowerment of this nation and its citizens.

All I can ask of you, members of the LJP, is that you keep an open mind for an independent campaign with a record of activity, effectiveness and sincere concern for this game and this Republic of ours.
