Title: How long will Scott Walker continue to run for Governor?
Post by: diptheriadan on May 19, 2017, 08:54:06 PM
Since Wisconsin doesn't have term limits, he could hypothetically run over and over again. Will he though? Will the voters tolerate it?

If the Wisconsin Democratss can find a competent candidate who can make a case as a serious alternative, 2018 will be the last time. If not, then TBD. At this point, my money's still on Walker.

Until the voters are smart enough to quit voting for him.

I think he will run just one more time.

BTW, since Wisconsin doesn't limit the number of terms of its Governor, are the Governors there (and other states in which the office is not term-limited; e.g., NY) any worse than the Governors of states where the office is term-limited? Are the former more likely to be corrupt than the latter? Are they more likely to be swamp-things?
In other words, where is the evidence that term limits actually improves the quality of governing that we get?

Virginia limits governors to only one consecutive term, and theirs have been super corrupt. New Jersey limits them to two, and theirs are also bad.

I wonder if allowing VA governors to serve 2 terms in a row would be better for the state. Right now, Lt Gov and AG offices seem to be used exclusively as stepping stones, as the Governor's office is an open seat every 4 years. I'm all for term limits, but that particular setup seems absurd. If term limits are too small, you get political opportunist issues. I also wonder if such rapid turnover due to 1 term limit increases the likelihood of people abusing the powers of office, due to more chances of landing lower quality candidates.

I think that an ideal system might be to allow only 2 consecutive terms, then allow 1 more term at least 4 years after they leave office. This way a good governor can have an extra term, but at the same time, they can't hang on for an unreasonable amount of time, like Branstad, and to a lesser degree, Otter.

Assuming that Scott Walker is an immortal vampire, he will keep running until he gets defeated or when the earth is literally obliterated.

I think he will run again one more time in 2018 and then run again for president in 2024. But I'm not sure yet whether he will win a third term. If he loses, the presidential ambitions are over.

He is 49, so he can still run a few more times, but people will eventually get tired of him.

He's much more well known now after all the national media.   I honestly don't think a lot of people in Wisconsin knew much about him prior to 2015.   It will hurt him since he did so poorly.

Probably just 2018, he wants higher office, he's bored and he doesn't control the state anymore, Vos does.

If he plays his cards right, he can be like Jim Brainard in Carmel, Indiana.

FWIW Tommy Thompson was elected to 4 consecutive Terms.

Probably his last term, 2020, reapportionment and redistricting will allow plenty of Dems to turn WI blue again.

Tommy Thompson was elected to 4 terms straight, but quit midway through the fourth one to join the Cabinet; he was governor for 14 years, so there's a recent precedent for that. Branstad served for 19-ish years or so.

Point being, it wouldn't be unprecedented if Walker wasn't halfway done yet.

Probably his last term, 2020, reapportionment and redistricting will allow plenty of Dems to turn WI blue again.

Redistricting won't change the borders of the state of Wisconsin...

Walker is the favorite, but just like Hogan or Baker, they're aren't unbeatable. Just like Betty Sutton can win in Ohio. But, Dems are focusing on FL, NM, NV, IL, MI, CO, Pa, VA and NJ where there are more Latinos in those states but Dems can win NH and one of MD, WI or OH, as well.
